P/S Noise

So glad I was able to run into this here. I've had the moaning noise for a few weeks now.

Family friend took a look at it this morning and said it was an easy fix by air'n it out.

I'm hoping the o-ring change out will fix this issue.

I'm at 97K, no warranty left over.

OEM O-Rings for CHEAPER

Just a heads up, I picked up my O-ring from a local Honda dealer for $1.42 + tax. Acura wanted 10.xx + tax.

Very happy with the DIY material for this fix.

Was a 10 minute change out for the O-ring.
Can't beat it for only a dollar.

Also - Ferman Acura looked up both wiper and power steering recalls via my VIN #, to make sure they were completed previously.

OP - how does one tell if the fluid is oxidized and needs replacing? I know the fluid is typically red but mine seems to have browned a little, do I need to flush the system and change out the fluid?

I picked up the o-ring for 1.77 from my local honda dealer. It only took a few minutes to replace it.
I also decided to flush and refill my power steering fluid while I was at it. Mine required 2 full bottles (12oz each) to refill the power steering reservoir, so if you decide to refill yours, make sure you buy enough. I only purchased 1 originally and had to run back out to get more.

If you dab some of your PSF on a white shop towel & it looks more brown then red, it's time to change. Turkey basting the res won't change the fluid, you either need to circulate the old fluid out or put it through a flush.

It worked for me! Since I didn't have the time, talent or place to do it, I had a dealer install it. O-ring $.99, new fluid $5.00, total cost with labor, $76!! But well worth it. Of course the dealer wanted to sell me a new PS pump for $600 and told me the O-ring by it's self would not fix the problem. Them I showed him the printout that I had made from ACURAZINE!! It has been about a month since the fix and no noise!!

Going to buy an o-ring now, drop it in, and . If it doesn't work, I'll keep my appointment with the dealer tomorrow. I need to change my fluid, too, but it's so damn cold. Maybe this weekend (not that it will be any warmer).

^That's where I was.

My o-ring was black. So either Acura had old o-rings in stock that they used when they did the power steering hose recall or they didn't change it at all.

I heard a couple squeaks this morning as it cleared some air from the system due to it being opened yesterday, but no whine.

Just got that horrible noise this morning after a very cold night here in Maryland. The dealership said they did the recall last year but after reading the TSB from April 2009, I am thinking they didnt replace with the right o-ring.

I will definitely try to fix with the new o-ring myself before taking it to the dealership. All the symptoms seem to be exact. Hopefully this will work!

Dropped my car off this morning at the shop to get the knock sensore replaced (Stupid Mouse!) and asked them to go ahead and change the O-ring, becuase I had the same noise everyone else has been having. My mechanic told me there were actually two o-rings, one is red and one is black. He replaced both for 40 bucks...

Hey erick3,
It did fix the issue. The black o-ring may not needed to be replaced, but if he is in there doing it...might as well. I have a jpg image of the pump showing the two o-rings...i just can't figure out how to get it on here yet.

Big shout out to the OP on this nice write up. My car started this noise just this past weekend, (after two weeks of more snow and cold then Buffalo) but like everyone elses, silence once warm. Went to Tisher Acura in Laurel MD and the service writer (Jason) confirmed it was more then likely the O ring. He told me $50 bucks and 2hrs job time or if I was a handy person..... spend a dollar in the parts shop and BING!!! an easy DIY. Good "Stealership" guy who was actually honest... and he validates why I LOVE THIS FORUM Three Cheers to all fellow "Shade Tree Mechanics"!!!! LoL ;-)

God I hope I have the same problem, cuz this is a cheap easy fix. Just to make sure, the noise is a high pitched sqeek or chirping coming from the belt area? A lot of u mentiond its cause the cold weather but here in hawaii the temps range from 60-80. Yes mine happens on a cold start. Eeather its a morning start or a night time start (after the engine has cooled down) but like I said its not that cold here and its been doing it everytime its a cold start for the past year.

Cud this be my problem/fix?

How long does the noise last? If it's real quick / very high pitched, I'd say it's drivebelt related. The power steering noise is not real high pitched, it's a low moan that changes in amplitude as you turn the wheel, which can be verified by checking for air bubbles in the ps res.
