Interstate 5 from SF to LA

I'm planning on going to LA at the end of this month.

If I set my cruise control to 70 MPH, I should be ok right? I got a bullshit speeding ticket last year and I'm not eligible for traffic school for another 5 months so I'm a little worried.

From what I've read online, it seems that CHP only pulls people for going 75+.

If I'm just going 5 over the speed limit on the highway, I should be ok right?

the speed limit on 5 is 70 anyway. you'll be fine.

if you have a smart phone you can download an app called "Waze". many drivers report what they see and you will get an alert on your phone when you're close. I went to LA last month and i was surprised by the fact that some users were traveling on I-5 as well.

on a side note, are you doing anything to prevent rock chips?

you should be fine at 75 (you'll find people flying past you). i have driven I-5 many a time from norcal to LA and vice versa...i've driven 80-85 and slowed down for known areas with speed traps (Tracy comes to mind) without issue.

another thought, though not a guarantee....radar detector.

at 70mph you'll be one of the slowest cars. you have nothing to worry about.

i was thinking of washing the car, giving a good coat of wax before the trip, and then tape painter's tape in the front for rock chips and bugs. when i get down there, i'd take it off.

when i'm coming back to SF, im planning to waterless wash the front of the car and then reapply painter's tape.

should i even boter? or do you have other suggestions?

I would say its a good idea to protect the front. I made the mistake of taking my 3 month old car to LA and I came back with a ton of rock chips. painters tape does look dumb but it works.

If you're going at the end of the month, make sure you don't go much slower than the flow of traffic, because that will attract attention, and you don't want to give the officer any excuses to pull you over. The end of the month is when quotas need to be met.

Is your car modded?

not that i recall...just follow the flow of traffic, don't be the lead of the pack. i think you're overthinking this. you'll be fine.

no, the car isnt modded at all because it's my girlfriend's TSX, not my TSX.

it has no tints, and the only thing i plan on doing is painter's taping the front and applying laminx on the foglights.

A better option than blue tape would be buying those clear heavy duty plastic wraps that folks use to wrap the large crates from warehouses in...ez to apply, and take off..

as for driving down, just dont be the fastest guy on the road and your good. if dude in front of you hasnt been pulled over, you wont either. i fly down the 5 going 90+ the whole way

I try to not lead the pack when traveling down I5. usually go about 80+ most of the way down there and I have a V1 which helps MOST of the time lol
