This "crazy homeless guy" as per gatrhumpy has been so kind to coin has purchased Silver from:

Still a little bit pricey over spot.
I've had quite a bit of luck buying from Ebay lately. Takes a little more time and waiting but you can lower your dollar cost average down a bit compared to the higher premium you'll spend on silver rounds directly from sites like APMEX.
The larger bars typically can be bought at prices much closer to spot but harder to move around / be mobile with.
You'll see a trade-off in prices between size/mobility and also generic rounds/generic bars (does not state on the face of the silver bar or coin who minted the actual product) compared to silver minted by a recognized mint.
Coming from a "crazy homeless guy" who was fortunate enough to find a renter for his condo in a saturated rental market and recently put about 65% down on a brand new home purchase in a neighborhood that hasn't seen a lot of foreclosures and notice of defaults, take this info for what it's worth.

I buy "locally"......but I know of few people who have both bought and sold through Kitco....they seem to be pretty satisfied.

I buy from Apmex. They are very reliable from what i hear. Havent had a problem yet (8 orders so far this year).
They always have sales on the holidays so look out for those. The only thing that gets you is the shipping prices. Somewhat expensive for smaller orders.
Couple of things to be aware of when ordering from some of the other places:
(From what i read on the forums/feedback)
If theyre out of stock, they will hold your $$ until they get stock (could be months).
Some places pre-sell what they expect to have in shop (making you wait-can be months from what i've read)
Other sites:

Now this is ok if you're buying one or two pieces, but i like to make purchases of multiple items and that drives up the cost rather quickly. Out of 50 bids, you can get lucky with one.

Is shipping certified or insured usually? Or is that only for large orders?

Most places will ship all orders USPS Registered/Insured signature upon delivery. They avoid ups/fedex because they wont insure bullion (i think thats what i read). And also that the private carriers will leave the package on your front door/unattended.
Why buy at retail prices if you can just hold a position in SLV?

I've had pretty good luck on eBay but I'm into Modern American Gold Eagles. Usually free shipping and insured. I try to strike a balance between the spot price and the intrinsic/rariety value of the coin. As such, I usually deal only in proofs (sometimes Bus. Strike) graded at 70 by NGC or PCGS.

I use www.bulliondirect.com for both gold and silver. They are very good, allow you to store your bullion with them if you choose. They have a nucleo exchange that allows you to trade if you choose too. If prices trend any lower, I'll buy some more from them.

Yep- silver is going up quickly. I just bought my last order of Silver dollars on 8/23 and those were priced at 16.03- they're now 18-ish today. A pretty decent return for less than two weeks. I would expect Gold to snap up and start catching up to Silver some time soon too. BullionDirect allows you to order up to $1500 a month on the credit card or you can buy more by sending a check or wiring funds.

Silver should do pretty well this next year. I think it will move closer to historic ratios in relationship to gold. At the moment it takes almost 65 oz of Silver to equal the price of 1oz of Gold. It would not surprise me to see this ratio reduce to less than 50:1 by this time next year. I think it could take a few years for Silver to ultimately get to 30 : 1 so it should pay being a long-term holder of silver and certainly beats locking money in a 1.5% CD.
Both gold and silver should do pretty well in the coming years so holding a little of both is a smart move. I have been buying Canadian maple leafs more than Eagles of late because they have been trading at good discounts (almost a dollar in some cases) to the Eagles.
