hdmi dvd player

so i just bought a samsung hdmi dvd player...i didnt notice any difference between this and my previous progressive scan player hooked up with monster component cables...also i noticed a popping sound through my tv speakers when switching to/from 480i/720p/1080i ...i'm sure i have it hooked up right since theres only one(hdmi)cable to hook up...but i was wondering...could i possibly have done something wrong or something? i sorta played with the settings and still didnt see a difference..anybody have any suggestions or should i just return it and get a different one? thanks

Ok, first off, what TV do you have?
Second, you bought an HDMI player but have it hooked up with component? Make sure it's actually outputting an HD signal. Some upconvert players won't output HD over component.
Also, go through the settings on the player to be sure it's actually set to output HD. Most upconvert players have various conversion modes, play around and choose the one you like the best.

I have a Panasonic S97 hooked up to a Sharp 32" LCD and the difference between that and my older Toshiba PScan player is noticeable most of the time. I tried out a bunch of DVDs when I got the Panasonic to compare it to the prog scan toshiba and in some cases, I really couldn't see a difference.

Monster cable?? Noooooooooo.

Anyway, does this DVD player upconvert the signal? Sounds like you were checking the resolutions through your TV, but what about the player? If it's just outputting 480p via HDMI you wouldn't notice any difference from a regular DVD player hooked up with components. If it is an upconverting DVD player, make sure it's properly configured to upconvert to either 720p or 1080i....
