new central air time, and so begins the money pit.....
the current 2 ton unit is about 10-11 years old and has developed a leak.
In april they dumped 1 lb 12 oz in and another 2 lbs today. On hot humid days, like the past few days, the evaporator would ice up and we would have to use the hairdryer to thaw it out.
I am not much for doing shit like that so i am having the evaporator replaced along with the outside compressor/fan.
The guy i am using is a licensed friend of my co-worker and i know of his work and it's good. He is going to get me an installed price with him supplying the equipment, and i asked about shopping the hvac business whom we supply the gas for, so i should get a descent discount.
He says that we should qualify for a $1200 federal credit and pa may or may not have one with our current delays on the budget.
So i should be under 4k for the total bill. I'll see in a week or so.

Yeah but on the good side, you're going to get an extremely energy efficient unit which should cut your utility bill, so you save on both ends. A 10-11 unit is more than likely very inefficient.

I love love love my new Trane HVAC system (efficient A/C, 95% furnace, air cleaner, and humidifier). It's been a huge noticable improvement over the old one.

How are you paying for this Dallison? Savings? So many months no interest financing?
We had a slight scare last night in that our A/C compressor stopped working on the hottest day of the year, and I was scared in having to pay for the $5K new system.
Turns out it was a plugged drain tube and broken pressure switch. I need to get a shop vac so that I can avoid the cost of a new drain tube and $234 to empty the drain line.

There is a 30% tax credit from the federal gov't when you choose something over 15 seer.
I don't know if pa is going to offer a rebate with the deficit we are in.
I also checked with the power supplier and they do offer a rebate, but my contractor is not on their approved list. 65% of his business is industrial and the other 35 residential.
I am also looking for a manufacturer rebate if any are available.
I wasn't looking forward to spending $4000 but i know it's worth it.

only complaints i hear from york is that the condenser is loud but thats if you have picky ass neighbors who will complain about anything. I just did a Daikin vrv multiple split system in our house which was about $5k but than again i did get the contractors price.

i posted these in the ramblings thread, but since some don't always go there.
The bill was $4100 for the inside and outside units. It is a 2 ton with a 15 seer rating. This replaced a unit that was prob rated 10 seer 10 years ago.

Nice. Did it make a difference in the air movement in the house? My nearly year-old Trane system made a night-and-day difference in how comfortable my house stays all year round.

I have the old one disassembled in the lawn to recycle it. I should get about $40-60 for the scrap.
All in all it is a big bill but worth the investment for when we sell and for the time we are going to be there to enjoy it.

My downstairs unit is about to die.. it's on year 13-14. I'll set the thermostat to 78, but it'll hang at 82 in the house. May do some looking around soon, or let it ride out this summer and get a new one before next summer.

Our electric bill has def gone down since last year. Our electric bill is $180 for the last 30 days. The bill was an estimate not an actual reading, but it has reallly been cold. the average temp this year was 29 compared to 32 last year. We'll see next month if they do an actual reading and if it's still balls cold til then.

My heat bill stays around $130 which is down from a peak of $220ish last year. My a/c bill was down some, but I don't know the exact numbers. New units definitely "save" money.

These newer units are pretty awesome! I have 2 units, a 2 ton one and a 1.5 ton one and both are set around 76-78 depending on the day outside. Usual electric bill stays under 220 dollars! Thank god for these High efficiency units and CCFL's!
