Grills - Infrared?

Anyone have one or have any experience with one?

I've been dying to buy a nice grill for over a year now, and I think its time to just do it.

Home Depot has the Char Broil infrared (which I have been eyeballing for over a year) for 599....which is more than I'm willing to spend right now.

BUT....Sears has a infrared Kenmore (which im guessing is char broil) On sale for 399 with another $25 off if you order online for pick up.

I think this is what I'm going to go for, but I'm curious what you guys have to say.

Thanks.

So it's electric then obviously. That makes it easy to use.

You would still get outside/in cooking
There would be no contamination (smoke from coals or chemicals from lighter fluid)

Let us know how she grills.

Have you thought of getting a Big Green Egg instead of a gas/infrared grill? I know it's a little more than your wanting to spend, but the reviews are all excellent on these things.

Those are smokers not grills I thought.

Or can you use it as a grill also?

Both, it ranges from a constant temperature of 200°F - 750°F, so you can do either. A friend has one and it gets up to whatever temp you want pretty fast, then you can keep it pretty steadily at that temp for long periods of time. I want one, but my stainless Char Broil works for grilling and I don't have an extra $700 laying around.

They do a bunch of slow cooking on one in this thread.

I cant speak for the infrared's, but I have a char-broil commercial series. Other than having some hot and cold spots which I havent had time to address yet they are great grills.

check out this forum that I found, its full of grill nerds (kinda like the parts of this site that ramblings regs arent allowed into)

That sucks then... and yes BGE's are expensive.

Is this the Kenmore your looking at Sears Model 16657? I've heard Kenmore is made by either Char Broil or Webber.

I have a Costco grill that has bottom an rear infrared (propane).

Honestly, I guess I don't see it doing anything other than being a hotter (a little) than a regular burner on full power. There is certainly no magic to it, although I have only used it to try and sear some pieces of meat before grilling them.

Yes thats the one...and I figured it Char Broil because I dont really see anyone else using the whole "infrared" thing.

Stogie...it aint just a burner...its the whole the grill. Its supposed to be even heat dispersal without the flares ups you get from regular grills with the exposed flame.

That's the one I have, but haven't figured out what "infrared" cooking is yet either.

I've got the 3 burner Char Broil (non-infrared) that looks exactly like that one and paid $400 for is 3 years ago. I can definitely notice when cooking that it doesn't cook evenly, you need to either cook right over a burner or in between if not using a cast iron skillet. I'd like to try an infrared system to see how it cooks... I bet it could Pittsburgh a filet nicely.

I have a regular CharBroil propane grill. The only issues I have had are with the grates. The older TEC series or the Red series from Char Broil are a lot more expensive, but have a really nice rating. It's up to you, but IMO, I would get a nice solid stainless steel grill. Something middle of the road.

I have never tried cooking on the infared grills before. I just bought a Propane grill/Charcoal grill with a smoker box. It is about 7' long in total. 2' of it is propane, the next 2' is charcoal then the smoker box is about 18" long. It has a side burner as well.

http://www.chargriller.com/store/pro...bf20682ffb1de4

I love it. I have only used the propane side of it once or twice to cook burgers and hot dogs. Now the smoker on the other hand, I have used the crap out it. Brisket+7 hours of smoke time=Yummy.. I just really need to find some good info on smoking.

Look forward to your review of the infared cooker.

Grill works pretty damn well.

Hooked her all up, got it cranked on high for all three burners for about 20 minutes (first time usage to burn any residual oils or whatever per instructions) The grill hit 700F on all three burners in minutes.

I turned down one burner a bit and tossed on some corn in the husk in foil. I turned down the other two even more and they stayed at their temp pretty consistent without being too highly effected by the 3rd burner, even when the lid is closed.

I made nice thick boneless porkchops and some portabello on the other 2 burners.

Everything came out perfect. Great flavor, juicy, nice grill lines.

The only thing I forgot to do was pre-spray the grill with canola like it says to do and I'm going to pay for that one...need to clean two of the burners up.

Other than that, left it on high to cook off most of the junk, and hit it with a grill brush. It cooled down really quick and its now snug under its new cover.

Worth every penny

nice. We are still using a cheap $100 charbroil grill that the in-laws got us 7 years ago. I have replaced the burner and the drip guard a couple times. It does the job for now and i have mastered the thing with its hot/cool spots.

We are waiting to buy our next house to get a grill that will be mounted on a top post or in an outside kitchen.
