And it should be a law! Green lawns in SoCal? It's a damn desert.

 

Wait till Fall and thatch the entire lawn then reseed and use a good fall fertilizer. No point in trying to save it now.

I agree with Moog, either do a natural yard with landscaping native to your area or get turf. In recent years, the quality of turf has improved greatly, with some of it looking and almost feeling like real grass. If you just have to have real grass, wait until fall and reseed.

It's not the std. plastic strips.. it has sand and such in it to give it a real look / feel / etc.

 

When I was on set while making the Evan Almighty movie, the set houses has synthetic gras and that stuff was awesome. The only problem was it got hot to the touch in full sun, but other than that it's dark green and maintenance free.
