Freaking toilet keeps leaking
Freaking toilet keeps leaking
Our water bill's shot up the past couple months and we suspect this slow-leaking toilet isn't helping. Any ideas how to fix it? No idea what its called (I'm not a toilet repairman) but this tower-like pump-thing that shoots out water when you flush is slowly dripping when idle. I suspect it could also be that flap thingy that the toilet handle is connected to. Would getting a new one of those fix it?
Thanks
Thanks
My toilet downstairs does this. Mine has a rubber ball type thing that falls into a hole, so it was either the ball or the seal around the hole. I replaced the ball as it was easy, but it still leaked. I'm too lazy to replace the seal and since I don't use that bathroom, I just turned the water off.
Anyway, it's that part at the bottom of the tank where the leak is occuring; in your case, it's a flap. Buy one of those or a toilet repair kit (replaces most of the internals).

you can try a few things and its a cheap fix. You could tighten or loosen the screw on top of the tower that attaches to the float (black ball) If it runs it could also be a bad flap which they sell for $5 and it just clips off and you remove the chain from the handle. If it a bad "tower" you can get a new kit for maybe $20. Turn the water off and unscrew the water line. The is a nut right where you unhook the water line and the whole thing comes out and can be replaced. Flush the toilet oonce you shut the water off though
i would replace the whole toilet, it may be easier than trying to figure out what parts go where if you are not handy with the house stuff.
I wanted to replace the guts to the toilet at home. The professional kit(not the ones you get at lowes) were almost $30 and a complete toilet with this kit was something like $75, plus the wax ring, j-bolts, and new seat.
It rarely ever gets clogged and fills up real quick.
If you are brave enough it will take about 30-60 minutes to complete

More than likely this is your culprit. I've fixed tons of toilets for friends/family/myself.

Go to Home Depot and buy every one they make. Then go home and match the right one up. Should take you about 2 minutes to replace it.

No need to buy a bunch of flappers, they are pretty much universal.
There are several fairly common flapper types, but some toilet manufacturers have differing flappers for individual lines and models.
We have three toilets in our place, and Home Depot didn't have the flapper for our Kohler low profile in stock, although HD had flappers for our American Standard and Toto toilets.
The local hardware store (ACE) had flappers for various Kohlers as well as the others. Fortunately, the price of all our flappers is below $10 each, regardless of model/manufacturer.

I've seen 4 or so different versions.I also take for granted that I live 5 minutes away from HD.
I have to fix mine this weekend. The flapper valve keeps sticking up, so I have to figure out how to keep it from unsticking, or at least I need a new flapper valve. I'd like to try to keep the old one if possible.
