As I mentioned before, I believe they will be pretty equal.
Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. The RSX also has 512mb of graphics render memory and is capable of 100 billion shader operations and 51 billion dot products per second. It also has over 300 million transistors, larger than any processor available commercially today. It will be manufactured using the 90nm process with 8 layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra video cards, which would cost roughly $1000 total if bought today.
To show off the PlayStation 3's graphical brawn, Sony showed several game demos, including an Unreal 3 tech demo of what appeared to be Unreal Tournament 2007. In what must come as a relief to developers, Epic Games' Tim Sweeney was on hand to vouch for the PS3, saying it was "easy to program for" and that Epic had received its first PS3 hardware two months ago. He proved the tech demo was real time by showing it again and manipulating the camera and zooming in.

As I mentioned, the issue is Bandwidth is a serious issue with the RSX GPU... The R500's embedded DRAM is a big advantage Here is a technical thread from Beyond3d:
PS3
System Bandwidth Main RAM 25.6GB/s
VRAM 22.4GB/s
RSX 20GB/s (write) + 15GB/s
(read)
SB 2.5GB/s (write) +
2.5GB/s (read)
GPU has 22.5 GB/s to external dram + 35 GB/s to/from CELL.
It seriously lacks bandwith.
I hope G70 is reserving to us some other surprise..

E3 2005: PlayStation's Back, Alright!
Backwards-compatibility re-confirmed.
by Nix
May 16, 2005 - The big excitement of this year's Sony Conference at E3 was about the new PlayStation 3, but don't let news of a new system deter you from getting psyched for the PS2 games that will be shown on the show floor (and PS1, if there happens to be an amazing PS1 game to report on this year ... Hey, it could happen.) Sony reconfirmed as part of its E3 unveiling of PS3 that the system will be backwards-compatible with PS2 and PS1 games.
There was no word in this news on whether texture smoothing might be used to improve PS2/PS1 games -- the PlayStation 2 had rudimentary filters to help run PlayStation 1 games with a cleaner look and with less loadtimes, so it is hoped that we'll see some advancements with this new monster machine on the games everybody already owns.
Look for a test of PS3's backwards compatibility a long, long time from now. In the meantime, we'll be covering all of the PS2 games (and PS1 games) that you should be buying in preparation for this new Sony console. Oh, and obviously, to play and enjoy the hell out of in the meantime...

One of the main reasons I like the Playstation 2 is backwards compatibility. Since the PS3 has this, I'm sold already. As soon as they start letting preorders come in, I'm putting mine in.
I'm pretty sure you could pre-order it now.
EB games will take your $20 for pre-ordering ANYTHING. They just put you on a list and invest your money somewhere else. I'm sure your local store already has one going.

"Look, we want it to be real. We honestly do. If it is, we'd feel complete -- whole. But we have suspicions we simply cannot shake.
In August of 2004 this editor visited the offices of Guerilla in Amsterdam. There team members admitted that Killzone 2 development was well underway, but that they did not intend to release on PlayStation 3 and that they had, in fact, not even been provided with PS3 development kits at the time. That means that between August of 2004 and May of right now, Guerilla received tools and made a game for a system they knew pretty much nothing about -- a game that is as ridiculously polished as this one, no less. I don't care how fantastic of a developer your company might be, something like that just doesn't happen.
Or about Mark Rein from Epic?

We're inclined to mistrust Killzone 2's gameplay legitimacy even further because of the way the video plays out. No shooter in existence features characters that do exactly the right thing at exactly the right time all the time. It seems as if the entire Killzone 2 showing was like a wish that did not waver, not even once. Then there's the way the control seems suspiciously fast to be done on analog sticks. The circumstantial evidence is just too much to ignore, you know?
All that being said, I cannot in good faith tout Killzone 2 as the best looking game ever because I really don't think it's a real game yet. But it sure is one hell of a CG sequence that, if in anyway happens to be representative of the final product, shows us what next-generation shooting should be like."
You know, it's really a bit ridiculous that the PS3 is backwards-compatible all the way to PS1. I mean, I haven't played a PS1 game in ages. But I think developers still make new games for it, so I guess that is some loyalty going on there. Kinda crazy.
