Microsoft, Sony: Next Generation Consoles Not To Be Released Until 2014
(CNN) -- Gamers might have to wait at least another three years to before there's any update to their Xbox or PlayStation consoles.
Prominent gaming news site Kotaku on Thursday quoted multiple unnamed sources saying both Sony and Microsoft hope to extend the life of the current generation of consoles for as long as possible.
"Both MS and Sony are telegraphing to each other that they're delaying, to milk the current [generation] and fill in previous craters better," said a source Kotaku described as an "insider who has worked with the first-party companies like Sony and Microsoft."
Other sources told the site that 2014 is the target date for the two companies, both of which rolled out significant updates to their gaming consoles in 2010.
Microsoft introduced its Kinect system and Sony introduced Move. Both motion-activated systems that were rolled out at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.
Such a delay would leave Nintendo as the only one of the big-three console makers expected to introduce a new product in the near future.
As Sony and Microsoft pushed their motion systems (in some ways an effort to catch up with Nintendo's motion-activated Wii) Nintendo stood pat in that space at E3. Instead, the company focused on software and its new handheld 3DS gaming system.
Observers expect Nintendo to announce, and possibly demo, an updated Wii at this year's E3.
As Kotaku notes, a wait until 2014 would make the Xbox 360 Microsoft's lead console for nine years and Sony's PlayStation 3 its top product for eight. That's an eternity in the world of consumer electronics.

i've been hearing this number for a while..
it makes sense if you read up a bit on how neither the PS3 or XB360 have reached their full potential..
i believe the best is yet to come for both of these consoles in the next 2-3 years...
but i am like others that like to get new tech ASAP.

not needed and plus sony seems to follow the media. ps1=cd 2=dvd 3=blu-ray if there was some new disc that trumped blu-ray i garentee sony would have a console to run in no time.
so what? they have not even fully exploited these systems yet... and with Kinect and Move just released, it is only common sense that they wait another 2-3 years before release
Won't even talk about the economic outlook............

That's probably the biggest reason why we won't see new systems for a while.
Nintendo is launching a new console (most likely this fall) and its supposedly more powerful then the PS3 and 360. Currently codenamed Project Cafe.
Theres still plenty of life left in the PS3 and 360.
I just pray that if/when PS4 launches, that I won't have to restart my collection of movies because of some "new-ray" disc format.

Its actually nice not having to shell out big money to upgrade to a new system every 2-3 years.
Hell....with apple tv, and the twins I NEVER turn my xbox on anymore....I'm very much debating trading it in...gamestop has a deal on systems this week where they'll add an extra $50 in credit. I have my ps3...which I dont love the controls on as much...but its primarily a blu ray player...and with the amount of time I dont play games...it works just fine if/when I do decide there is another game I'll want.

Good...I don't want to have to buy a new system anytime soon. The PS3 does everything I need it to do, and I know that games aren't even close to maxing out the chips' potential. Focus on creating games that push the limits of the system, THEN worry about creating a better system.

Good I just got my 360 slim because my original 360 made back in November of 2005 died. I don't want to spend more money on a new system. Let MS and Sony take as long as possible to release a new system.
I'm really ok with that. Not really too sure what they could do right now that would make the system any better. Faster, more ram, better graphics card? Games right now have kind of plateaued with the way they look. Could they really make games that look more lifelike?
I am sure that they could. But really not worth it at this point. I am sure we will see some new kind of technology in 3 more years that will be on the new systems making everyone go "wow".

Really the only thing that needs an upgrade is the power of the systems. The functionality is just fine. I can do all that I want on my 360, besides of course BR (which I own none of).
I always thought it would be cool for a console to release a hardware upgrade. That would allow people who want better graphics to simply buy an add on. Those who don't upgrade will have normal graphics, as the games could scale down to be supported on standard hardware. Unfortunately, history shows that add-on's aren't well supported.
I game on my PC often, but my 360 much more. Being able to lay back on a couch and play my games on the big screen is much better than having to sit in a chair with a mouse/keyboard. Yes, I could always hook my PC up to my TV and buy an Xbox controller, but then I'd have to carry it around and re-hook it up every time I wanna play a game. Plus, all my friends play on XBL, something I couldn't do on a PC.

Sony CFO Quells Rumors About the PlayStation 4
In a recent briefing last Thursday, some comments by Sony CFO Masaru Kato were interpreted to mean that a successor to the PlayStation 3 is in the works.
Kato referenced development of future platforms, and the rumor mill inferred that Kato was referring to the PS4. That apparently wasn't the case.
Sony hasn't had it easy these last few months. With a net loss of nearly 260 billion yen, hacks across the globe, and a severely impaired PlayStation Network, Sony has been trying to fix itself.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Sony expects its R&D spending to rise from 428.6 billion yen to 460 billion yen. When asked as to why there's an increase in spending, Kato mentioned the R&D costs for a new portable gaming machine, dubbed the Next Generation Portable (NGP).
Kato also said that the PS3 still has life on the market. He followed that by saying, "But this is a platform business, so for future platforms, though I can't say what we are going to release when, our development work is under way." This was extrapolated, and spun into PS4 rumors across the web.
But Kato was not referring to the PS3, he clarified in an interview with the Wall Street Journal this past Monday. The NGP was the only product he specifically referenced.
"Any time we launch a product, from that day we already start thinking about the next one," Kato said. His statement about development of future platforms was "just a general statement," he said.
This year's E3 will see the unveiling of the Wii 2. There have been some thoughts that a new Xbox might be displayed, but that seems unlikely. Given Kato's recent statements, a new home console from Sony has zero possibility of being shown.
Where Sony will take its PlayStation line is unclear, but as it stands, the PlayStation 3 is a beast of a machine.

As new generation games continue to outshine the previous generations; it doesn't look like the systems are the limiting factors. As for economics, the gaming industry maintained growth even through the worst times of our current/recent recession. Entertainment does not go away but it does shrink. Most games cost about $1/1hr of entertainment. That's hard to beat.

No one seems to mention the success of the PS2, which had a life cycle till, well crap till this day. There was a point in time where the PS2 outsold the 360, Wii, and PS3, and hopefully the big 3 saw this. The PS2 didn't have the power to be updated with firmware's, otherwise it would of probably lasted a bit longer. They could of done sooo much with the hard drive add-on, but thanks to HDLoader that screwed it all up. My point is we really don't need a new generation of console systems, until something like what was in the movie Minority Report comes out, you know live your dream...
