Was what I did considered low balling?
Was at a Honda dealer with friend, he was looking for a 2013 Accord LX. Dealer was asking $20500 plus tax and fees. I asked them to give it to us for $20500 out the door. He told me no one will sell it at that price, didn't even bother to ask us to stay. Was I really low balling him???

I guess you can say it's not low-balling since that's when you offer something really low like 5K for a 10K car. You on the other hand were trying negotiate and might have started off on the wrong foot with that low of an offer. You do have to realize that MSRP is a few grand more, and for him to come to 20500 which is invoice is already a pretty good deal.
We are both in our late 20s.
I guess it was a bit low, I always thought the price they gave out is always negotiable. Or maybe they changed their strategy and started giving out their lowest price at first in order to avoid unnecessary negotiation???

Well what was the MSRP on the car that you were looking at?
MSRP for '13 Accord LX with CVT is $23,270. Wanting it for $20,500 OTD is like paying $18,450 for it before TTL (which if OP's in San Jose is approx. 10%... give or take). In other words, that's $4,820 (20.7%) off MSRP. Not going to happen unless they were looking to move them out to make room for a new generation like they did with the 2012's when the 2013's hit.
$20,500 before TTL is 11.9% ($2,770) off MSRP. That's a pretty good deal but since Honda's doing their summer clearance now OP should be able to do 13% ($3,025) to 15% ($3,490) off MSRP without too much trouble.... unless this is a small dealership with not much competition around. That would make OP's price before TTL somewhere between $19,780 and $20,245.
Hope that helps.

MSRP is around the range that AZuser said...$23XXX. so how much are you guys willing to pay based on that MSRP? I always thought MSRP is the price that Honda "suggested" them to sell....which I always assume it's a rip off number (well my theory could be wrong) therefore I would always start negotiating base on their sale price not MSRP price! my friend kinda needs to get it this week, so what do you think will be the good number?

MSRP for CVT is not "around that range." It is $23,270. MSRP for manual is $22,470.
Like I already said, somewhere between $19,780 and $20,245 would be considered really really good.
Check Edmunds to see what others are paying ( http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ef006d2 ) for an LX or check out the prices paid thread over at http://www.drive accord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=74939

If the sales person won't go any lower, email their fleet manager and deal with him/her instead.

I purchased my LX CVT 2013 honda at the end of June using email approach, by first calling and discussing my intent with the fleet/internet manager. My follow up email was:

I really appreciate the response and detailed price quote from your dealership. I received several prices quotes, and have shown the lowest below. I look forward to receiving your second proposal that may be lower than the dealer price’s I received. I am not interested in any dealer that will just match this price. (Note that taxes and title varied very little between dealers, so I haven’t shown this below.)
Base price including destination charge $20,045
Dealer Add-ons $ 0
Doc Fee $399
Other fees $ 0
Total Dealer Price (Before Tax/Title/License) Without Finance/Flex Cash $20,444

I ended accepting the following offer (The winning dealer threw in their $497 tint, wheel/door guard package at no charge and also had flex cash available):

When dealing with salesmen, Don't take anything personal! You have to be firm and eventually someone will give in. The salesmen make money selling cars, so if you time it right, I see no reason you cant make the deal work ($20,500 otd). If you are serious about purchasing this car, get pre approved through a bank, get a cashiers check ($20,500), and take it to the dealership. Bet someone will accept your offer. Worst case scenario is, you return the check to your bank, OR you can pay the difference in cash (eg: tax, tags, title). And the DOC fee is NOT required by law, so I never pay the DOC fee.
My boss just negotiated on a 2013 ford edge, and got the 0% financing AND the $2500 dealer incentives cash. It took her 3 or more trips to different dealerships, but in the end she got what she wanted.

I would have done the same so I think you're good. Like someone else suggested, get a check and go to the dealer and tell them this is all you got. If that fails, head to the next dealer.
Also, honda has some incentives going on right now if I remember correctly. I know my friend was looking at a CRV and had almost $1,500 in incentives but one was because she just graduated from grad school.

If dealer doesn't call you this week then you were really to low. I bet they at least call you can give you a new price.
Accord is brand new, next year they will have fire sale, just like Camry this year.

hey guys, thanks for all the input. I didn't think I was low balling him either.
They called back today, asking if i am still looking for a car. I said yes and i asked them again to see what is the best they can do. My friend who wants to get the car was really anxious and he was afraid dealer will not wanna sell him the car because he thinks our offer is so low (honestly i dunno what he is afraid of or nervous about, I told him its not like thats the only accord left on the earth)...anyway i told the guy that our best reasonable offer will be $21500 OTD. Take it or leave it...he said he will talk to the manager!!! sigh....so tired!!!

The sales rep will call you back again and offer slightly above $21500 OTD. Probably around $22,000-22,250, if your friend is willing to part with $500 then take it. With monthly payments you will barley notice the difference.
i believe that is what is gonna happen, well he isn't willing to pay anything over 22K and he is paying cash....so we will see!
