Cool Weekend car thats under $35k?

This thread is just to entertain my boredom and was curious what most of AZ would pick as a 2nd toy car. Maybe a classic American car or something modern like a S2k or even a vintage euro?

Say you have $35k for a 2nd toy/weekend car.

What would you get?

I guess I would be different. I would want something rare and not practical.

Maybe like a Dodge Viper, NSX, S2k, 993, Euro 635, E30 M3 etc...

More of a collectors car...

I'd probably rock an NSX, 300ZX, or late model RX-7 and use the rest of the money for repairs....

Beat me to it. I was searching eBay for a good example (1995-1997) around $35k. Hard to find.

Practical side of me says an '06 S4 I could take to the slopes during winter or go mountain biking with...

i'd probably be looking for an NSX, although might consider a used porsche or M3. The s2k would be a good choice as a weekend car, but I probably go used and spend <25k. I've never owned a German car, so if I could afford a 2nd car, I suppose I should give one a try. plus it wouldn't have to be as reliable. But I don't think I could pass up an NSX.

I've never felt the urge for a collectors car. Possibly something just a little old as a project car, but I wouldn't want to spend near 35k for a project car (at least up front). Project cars I'd be looking at would be something like a datsun 510, e30 M3/3 series, first gen civic, etc.

Corvette small block (well, all the C4+ are small blocks)

1968 Mustang GT- 302-4V
1969-1970 Mustang Mach 1 or Sportsroof- small block V8
1970-72 Camaro small block V8 or Firebird 400 ci
AMX; maybe Javelin, 390 or 401

240Z
Porsche 914-6
Porsche 944

Sunbeam Tiger
Alfa Spyder
Saab Sonnett III

Jensen Healey
Jensen Interceptor
Lotus Elan/Elite/Europa

Maserati Indy
Maserati Merak
Pantera

That's a list of project cars I'd likely choose from with $35K and some time.

Since I saw "euro vintage" in your list...
(This is something I would love to get to be a project car)

1972-1974 BMW 2002 tii

I'm sure you can purchase a very well restored one for ~$35k, but it can't compete with the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

Easily tracked with a few upgrades over 1970's technology.

1995 Porsche 993 C2 (narrowbody)... black/black from late in the 95 model year so it doesn't have the basket handle 3rd brake light...

Blue would be my 2nd color choice:

If I had a warehouse to store 'em, I'd probably buy a bunch of random (mostly oddball) cheap cars and start a collection. Not museum pieces, just decent cars that you can drive and won't be totally embarrassed at the local cruise nite (Sunday is in Seekonk, Tuesday in Swansea, etc).

Seems like you could start a decent collection w/ $35K instead of buying just one car.

I don't know if it's the economy, but there seems to be a lot of affordable special interest vehicles out there... Like this supra for 8500:

I had a 70 Javelin with the 199ci 6, with a 3spd on the floor that I bought for $50 back in the mid 80's. Learned how to drive stick on that. Best $50 I've ever spent

Always wanted a 2 seater AMX (390, 4spd, go-pac)... This one is local, and under budget at 22k:

S2000 Ftw

S2000

Great for the street, top down in 5 seconds. Great for the track, throw in some track pads and a spare set of track wheels. Tons of aftermarket if you want to.

You can haggle a new 2008 from the dealer for just under $30k. Clean used ones are out there for $20K. www.s2ki.com for info.

How about you just get rid of the 335i and take the 35k and put it towards a M6.

I'm looking at a 74 914S tonight. If I do it, I still have a 32K budget left for mods under your rules.

If you could find a 993 or 987S that would be a nice choice, but probably not enough money to get a nice specimen of either. S2000 or Miata are both great choices for modern roadsters, but if I were to pick up a car strictly for weekend driving I would be hard pressed not to get a Lotus Elise.

as far as street cars go.
I wouldn't have time to take care of more than one or two weekend cars, though.

Price also depends on the purpose of the weekend car- like the Sunbeam Tiger or 914-6 would probably be autocross/track cars as well as street cars, so extra wheels, tires, safety equipment, etc. have to be included.

A Maserati Indy will only be driven on the street- but I'm not sure I would want to spend weekends trying to balance 4 Weber carbs.

OK, fine, add the NSX and S2000 to my list of possibilities.

Well, you know my answer.....

New S2K FTMFW!

However, a used early 90's NSX goes in that range as well.

You can get an early 993 with decent miles for 35K. See the link in my post to the blue one w/ 27K miles for an asking price of $38.

Every time I "window shop" p-cars, the price of admission into that club seems a bit much when the miata and especially the s2k provide much of the same driving experience for a lot less coin.

From a maintenance and initial price standpoint, the S2k seems like the best bang for the buck... Lower costs upfront, new vehicle, honda dependability... it just has so many things going for it...

Greenie, I seen a bunch of 993 (non-turbo) in that range. Would still pick that over a NSX?

Late C5 ZO6 Corvette, well within the $35k ceiling. Forgot about that one. I almost bought an early-model C5 before deciding on the S2000.

A car I've looked at for years, lost interest, looked at again, moved onto something else, and then come back to has been a Porsche 928. I've always been fascinated by these big Porsches that purists claim to have the engine in the wrong end, but I would eventually like to try one. The depreciation is huge, making them relatively inexpensive, but maintenance on them is horrendously expensive.
