Best of luck ttribe!

But yeah, as long as you stay on top of the maintenance, these cars will last for a while, like anything else that you treat with care.

Probably only would have seen something if you saw the Lyme Disease thread down in Ramblings.

Short version - my 16 year-old son has Lyme Disease, plus three other infections. He's been battling this for 2 years now and has lost all of high school. At one point, it all but shut down his immune system and he was required to give himself weekly infusions (two needles attached to tubes inserted in either his abdomen or thigh) to keep his immune system somewhat functional. He's fighting the Lyme and related infections through antibiotics, but there's a whole other level of treatment that's next that will make him much sicker before he's better (also extremely expensive). Unfortunately, we need to delay beginning that treatment because an MRI just revealed a previously unknown malformation in his brain that is completely unrelated to the Lyme. This issue may need to be resolved before the next treatment phase (or it could be dangerous) and may require brain surgery. We're terrified...to say the least.

To say that the last few years have been hard on my family would be a mild understatement.

So far so good. My control arms need replacing and my rear diff needs new seals (small leak). About $1800 in repairs pending. Also thermostat needs to be replaced, but it's a common issue on this model. I'll take care of that as a diy one weekend.

Maintenance wise, I do most of the work myself.. . . just changed my oil and save $400 at the stealer,
rear brakes = saved $650 at the stealer,
flushed the brake lines = saved $700 at the stealer.
Changed all ten spark plugs and 1 coil = save $1100 at the stealer

All in all, considering the kind of car and maintenance involved, she's still a pleasure to drive. I'm at 66,500 miles now.

But for some reason, Discount Tire loves seeing my purchase new rear tires!

Yep, those cars eat tires. But, it's worth it.

The rear diff and control arms, I replaced all that right after I bought mine. I got such a steal on mine (at the time) that I really didn't mind.

Now we know about this. Dont get a new car. keep the $$ for something that is more important.

AZ does not give good financial advice but at least we know there are more important things than cars

I'm as guilty as anyone around here for giving terrible financial advice on car purchases.

Damn T I had no idea. I can't even imagine. I never knew I could love someone as much as my wife until I had kids. Just thinking about either one of them getting that sick makes me tear up. He's lucky to have a dad like you. Definitely sending some positive vibes your way from TN.

Tim...I can't imagine. I will send some positive vibes as well...
It's funny...how fast life goes, and loving someone so much other than yourself and it being a scary thing has been at the forefront of my mind. It's in those times that you see what you're made of and you are one tough SOB.

best of luck and wish your son a speedy recovery. One of my friends has been sick for a long time and no doctors knew why. 3 years later they diagnosed him with lyme disease, he's all better now but it took a long time.

Didn't you see my speedometer in the picture? I did it 20mph at a time, of course.

How long did it take you to reach 20mph...? 3 minutes...? Your car probably has a 0-60 in under 14 minutes.

Thanks for the well-wishes. I wish I could say things are getting better; they are not:

For migraines? No. He has a prescription medication he uses (as do I, btw).

Want to change rotors on a 9yo 3-series? If original, better have a propane hand torch or something. Otherwise, not much different from other cars to service, but my original front brakes lasted 7 years, not that much on highway, awesome

Since my car was a CPO, the rotors have been changed a couple of times under the extended service plan. Either way, I won't be doing the work; I'll have an independent shop do the work.
