Awesome! I bought myself some track time in a 458 and Gallardo. Going to do that in April.

Sweet Lambo though.

Cool. After I make it tunneling to Fort Knox, will you let me show up in my Poopdick McFartington or would you German BMW jerks/a-holes drive me away?

Since I'm playing some catch up on here...this set is from December.

Some of you who have followed this thread for a while know how I tried to cut a couple of costs a while back with an imitation Aero lip and with hand-painting my lower grilles myself. Well, you may also recall that the imitation Aero lip didn't exactly come painted very well. I had it re-painted, but we didn't re-do the prep; we left the underlying coat as a base. That didn't work too well. You may also recall I wasn't particularly happy with how it fit, but I was willing to live with it.

So, in the interest of admitting my mistakes, and again reaffirming the modding maxim - Do it right, or don't do it at all. - I present, my fixing of the errors.

As you can see below, the poor underlying prep on the imitation lip's finish left it pretty prone to chipping and peeling (also note the size of the gaps in how it fit).

You may also notice in the pics above that my paint on the lower grilles was also chipping and that the driver's side grille had been destroyed by a rock.

So, to fix all of this, I did the following - 1) purchased a GENUINE BMW Aero lip from a BMW dealer; 2) had the lip painted to match by the dealer; 3) purchased GENUINE BMW lower grilles in black for the 335i (standard are silver, but you can get black from the parts department); and 4) applying a 3M clear bra in a can to the new lip before installation.

Here's how all that went:

Lip off and lower grilles out.

New lower grilles.

Installing the lip (grilles installed).

Completed. Much better fit. Much better look, all around. Should have done all of it this way from the beginning.

I thought it turned out pretty well. I ordered it off Amazon, read the directions, watched a 5min. YouTube video and then went out to my garage and sprayed it on the lip. I let it sit overnight, and then put it in the sun to cure the next day. Within 48 hours it was on my car and you couldn't tell it was on there. So far it's done it's protecting job pretty nicely.

on a related note, do you think that clear bra in a can will prevent the headlights from "yellowing" ?

That I don't know. I'm not sure about the impact of the direct heat from the lights and the interaction with the plastic lenses.

I honestly think it's the UV from the sun. If the 3M product protects against UV that may help. I had the guy put film on them. I ain't know.

headlight yellowing is a formidable foe...have yet to find a permanent solution but in the meantime i use blue magic headlight protectant every time I put on the tire shine.

Have you guys ever wondered why the taillights stay the same color (even the clear part)?

I would assume the exposure and material are pretty much the same as headlights.

When I made the comment I did, I was speaking more to whether the film could endure the heat from the lights and whether it would bond (permanently) to the plastic of the lens. But, I could be totally wrong in that supposition.

Might have to look into that product.

It's just the exposure to the elements. Road grime accumulates, and just being constantly weathered by gravel, dirt, and so on just builds up.

If you ever have the chance to pop the hood one of the older Mustangs (94-04) you'll notice the headlight housing extends up behind the hood. If the exposed part is foggy and opaque looking, I guarantee you if you pop the hood, the covered part will be clear as day.

Anyways, yeah polishing out headlights sucks. But the Blue Magic headlight protectant rockstar189764957862 mentioned is a great preventative measure. Use it after polishing though.

from my understanding it is mainly from the sun but somehow the taillights do not seem to have the same effect.

i can see why the covered part is not yellowing because it is covered.

based on what i have seen and used, all headlight restoration including sand paper only last a few months. So i don't think it is from debris but sunlight.

I think it's years of debris attacking your plastic headlights for years, which is what kills the UV protection and exposes the lights to further damage from the sun. The rear end doesn't see any rock chips, so the protection stays intact.

People have also been known to spray clear coat their headlights after clearing them up. A little intense IMO, but it seems to work.
