Aesthetics are certainly a big factor, but spacers also widen the track of the car and increase stability in cornering. Sometimes, spacers are used on race cars for just that purpose (e.g. M3 GT cars - Team RLL). Any negative effects? Not if they are done right. First, any installation of spacers MUST include longer lugs. Without that, there are serious safety concerns. Second, depending on you car, and how wide you go with the spacers, you can have rubbing issues on the fenders.

Actually, new developments from this morning might make it possible to do just that. I was supposed to go out of town to testify in a trial, but the trial date just got pushed, so I'll have more flexibility in my schedule. I just shot an e-mail off to the guys at Goodspeed to see if they could fit me in for 30-45 minutes to throw those suckers on there.

One side effect to adding spacers to only one axle will change the handling of the vehicle.
Widening the rear track will make the car understeer, or push slightly during cornering. But that depends on the size of the spacers. I run 10mm spacers in the rear on the FR-S and haven't noticed much of a difference, but Im not driving it at 9/10ths.

Can you have them install the rear and put it back on the ground and see how you like it? In the pics, it seems as though the 3 suffers from the same bloated rear fenders that most new cars have, making that wheel appear more sunken in then the front.

Yeah, I'm thinking I will do exactly that. It's a short process and I'm going to stay there at the shop with the car.

That's why my spacers are 5mm larger in the rear.

You need wheels and tires that look like a prolapsed anus.

Took a couple of the 10mm Macht Schnell spacers from my M5 and had them put on the rear wheels of the 335. I went back to the same spot that I took pictures last week to try to get some similar shots for before and after comparisons.

Thanks...kind of.
Yep. I decided not to put spacers on the front once I saw the rears on there. If I lower the car at some point, I might re-think the front.

I didn't really notice a difference until the rear shot
BUT I think that's a good thing. It doesn't look like you were trying too hard to be flush
