Television: Top Gear (USA) News and Discussion Thread
They were tons more seasons behind before, weren't they? I remember watching a Season 7 rerun not too long ago.
Anyways, I hope we get this on the History Channel here in Canada

I liked the new trailer. I know I'll be watching or, at least, DVR'ing this show. I'm now willing to give these three a chance.
No matter what, I
the original Top Gear.
The British producer was right....the first few seasons of the British show were not so great, but the changes made subsequently made me fall in love. It helps that having spent several years living in England, I understand the humor and am familiar with many of their stars, which only adds to the enjoyment.

Adam Ferrara, Rutledge Wood, Tanner Foust

The whole reason I like Top Gear is becuase of the presenters. They could talk about anything, and I'd still be rivited.
Im pretty positive this will be "just another attempt" at some American trying to get rich from an idea that has already been proven. I can't wait to see how "honest" they are about American cars and how much advertising they will do for other companies. I bet the test track will be littered with Pepsi ads.
I don't have high hopes.

They need to give this show a full season, at least, to grow into its own. I dont want an exact replica of TGUK. But I dont want just another "car" show on tv. There better not be any sponsors on TGUS either. If there are, Im not even going to bother watching it. TGUK isn't sponsored, and because of that the hosts are able to say what they truly feel. Its hard to watch a car show thats currently on tv because the hosts seem more like salesmen then presenters.
I don't think there is any chance that this show will be remotely as entertaining as the UK version. That being said, I believe this will be far and away the best car show ever made in America. I'm really pulling for History on this one....
You have to remember that TG's earlier season's ratings were so bad that they had to create another show, Fifth Gear. And TG UK didn't have any high hopes to live up to.
Everyone's expecting this show to be fantastic right off the bat, and I don't think it will. It'll be fun for the first couple of seasons, then really get into its stride in Season 3 or 4, if it makes it that far. I'm hoping it does, because if this show is better than TG UK's older seasons, then it'll eclipse Hammond, May, and Clarkson sooner than expected, especially considering the famous trio are starting to age quite a bit.

Not to mention that while TGUK is letting this show be its own beast, they are still involved in the production and as such have very likely used all their lessons learned from eight years of producing TGUK.
That in itself should ensure the first TGUSA episodes are better than what the early TGUK ones were like.
They probably won't be as good as the TGUK ones are now and I can't see how they would be. It takes more than a couple episodes to develop that kind of on-screen chemistry.

Top Gear tried to incorporate a used car segment with Jason Dawes. Once they figured out he was the weak link, May got brought in and Series 2 was the real beginning.
TG is Clarkson, and to a lesser extent May and Hammond. That's what makes it funny, and that's what makes it entertaining. I'll give this one a look, but I do not have high hopes.
But perhaps that's a good thing. Maybe it will be decent, and forge it's own path.
We signed something, but I don't remember exactly what it was.
I don't think it was an NDA, but maybe something to do with insurance. I honestly don't remember.
Since I went to the very first taping, it wasn't as good of an experience as it could have been and later was for different tapings. The weather was very hot, and we were stuck standing up in a wooden hangar with poor ventilation. All of the females that were present were complaining about the heat and that their legs were hurting.
We were the guinea pigs for future tapings, so they were experimenting with us. They were pretty strict, as well. No chewing gum (they actually made people spit their gum out if they spotted them!), and no white clothing (if you wore a white top, they made you go towards the rear of the audience). I later found out that they become more lax as they learned from each taping.
For us, the taping was supposed to end at a certain time, and they went a little over an hour past the time they told us we'd be dismissed. As I mentioned, we were all hot due to the lack of ventilation, and the weather. Standing for extended amounts of time while enduring the weather and thirst didn't help, either.
If someone were to ask me if I wanted to go to another taping, I would refuse. But I would say if the taping were to last about half the time it did, I would be able to tell people I enjoyed it.
The hosts were all cool, and the whole crew was doing the best they could, but we happened to the first taping, so our experience was different from others.

Im getting pretty damn excited for this. Jalopnik had a review of the first three episodes and they said its pretty rough, but by the third episode the hosts begin to mesh. Cant wait!
