Congrats man i was on the same boat two months ago when my daughter (first kid) was born too, this car was on top of the list but i decided to with something else and having only one car it sucked a bit. i like your car and im a bit jealous right now but made a right choice man !

Hey Matt, how do you like the Michelins? I have a set of Pirelli Sottozeros on Volvo wheels for my Focus ST. We don't get much snow here but I'm not a huge fan of these tires. They're a little loud and rough. They're way better than my summers in this weather though

How's the 3.6L treating you? I've been curious why Subaru got rid of the 2.5 XT and just went with the 3.6 and the 2.5i ... Is the 3.6 a better engine than the 2.5 Turbo?

The Michelins are awesome. They are great on snow and ice and not all squishy on bare pavement. They have grip like Blizzak's but should last twice as long. Part of the reason I ponied up for these is they have a 40k mile warranty. So I may have paid $150 more than some other tires but I should get 4 seasons out of them.

The 3.6R is nice. Plenty of power and TQ but not a super high tech engine. Gets around 18 mpg in town and 25+ on the highway. A little better than my Legacy, especially on the highway, but it runs on regular so cost per mile is quite a bit less. It will be interesting to see if the '15 OB is available with the 2.0t like the new Forester has. Overall this car is a great DD. Comfortable and plenty of power and awesome utility.

It has nothing to do with Subaru drivers. Lots of drivers of AWD vehicles act this way. Back during Snowmageddon in DC, I cannot tell you the number of moron SUV drivers with AWD I saw stuck on the side of the road while I soldiered on in my Miata. The car can only do so much. The driver is really the most important thing in the car in those types of conditions.

The myth of AWD has claimed the dignity of many a driver.

Lotsa drama I had the other day...I held off as long as I possibly could with my summer tires, participated in a show on Sunday, and was expecting snow on Tuesday. Monday night I figured I would swap out my wheels back to my OEM 17's with A/S tires, and when I did do it, as I was going around the car loosening the lugs before lifting her up, got two of my wheel locks off, and the 3rd one snapped the key in half. Now I was getting frantic about driving in snow on max performance summer tires (Michelin PSS). Mind you, I tightened the bolts by hand last time and torqued all properly. 19 of the 20 bolts came off with the same exact muscle needed with the breaker bar, but that one wheel lock kicked my ass. Next morning went to my friend's shop and was about to have them break the last two locks off, but thought I would call a friend of mine who works at a BMW store to see if they have the master key, which they did. At this point it was snowing like crazy in the morning...Straight line acceleration, no noticeable difference, but the slightest braking felt like the wheels locked up and I slid pretty far. I get to my friend carefully, remove the 3rd lock easily like all other lugs, and back to the 4th lock that broke my key, and guess what? It broke the dealers master key too!

Went back to my friends shop where the broke off the 4th lock, drove back to work very carefully and immediately changed the wheels. We didn't get that much snow in the end, but the slush was enough to show just how much these tires do not work in the snow.

BTW - I don't think I need snow tires because I have yet to get stuck in the 18 years I've been driving, and we don't get that much snow around here to warrant it. Though the little snow we got the other day followed by the next week of at freezing or below temps, so there's a whole lotta ice patches everywhere.

I will say though, even with temps below 50, whether wet or dry (not ice or snow, just wet or dry), there was little to no noticeable difference in handling with the Pilot Super Sport summer tires. I don't "drive it like I stole it" on a daily basis, but in my normal driving, didn't notice much of a difference..

That's really surprising. Every test I've ever seen would suggest that summer tires below 40F are totally worthless in precipitation.

I was just shocked by what he said to me. Even though I have never heard someone talk so sideways out their ass at me in my life, I should have handled it better. I am a die hard Oregonian, Subaru fan(boy) and winter driver. And when someone talks shit to me about those things then has the nerve to question me about my bike rack, it's about enough to push me over the edge.

Thanks man. Yeah I sold the Legacy because the baby seat wouldn't fit in the back. I love the OB though. It mobs and it's lightyears ahead of the Legacy as far as being a DD, for work and for play.

This car never once went in a ditch, or even got stuck for that matter in the 8 + years I owned her, and I logged hundreds of hours of winter driving in the mountains.





















Not that that comes as a surprise to those of you who actually know (of) me.
