Speed Bump myth?

Over the past couple months I've heard from two friends at different occasions that if you dont go over a speed bump with your front wheels at the same time, its bad for you car. This was my first time hearing this, and I dunno I think its complete BS.

So to be sure I'm coming here to ask you guys. Have you heard this before? Is it true?

Sounds like you need 2 new friends. Not seeing how a 2 second pass over a speed bump will fuck up a side of your car....

WTF? There's no conceivable reason why that would happen. If it were true, going up a driveway at an angle would be "bad for your car".

Your friends probably heard it from the same source or one heard it from the other. I could be wrong, but it just sounds like one of those stupid rumors.

It's really easy to knock your car out of alignment. But your car isn't that fragile.

haha yea that what i was thinking, no i dont think they heard it from the same source. The first time I heard it was because I was avoiding a speed bump and i clipped the back wheel and my friend said "you know thats worse than just going over the speed bump right" I didnt feel like saying anything.

The other time I was riding with a friend and going through campus and it has those 15mph speed bumps the low long ones. And he was going over it at like 30mph and I told him thats not that good for your car (i dunno if it actually does damage but hitting a bump that hard just makes me cringe a ltl since I like taking it easy over bumps) and he was like no its fine, you just want to go over bumps head on and not crooked, again i just sat quiet just was thinking how the hell did he come to that conclusion!

These guys arent car guys so I wonder where they heard it from. I wonder how many people think that

I only hit speed bumps head-on because I'm too anal to hit them off-kilter.

I think their theory applies only in a Lada or Yugo.

Well of course that's going to do damage. They don't put speed bumps in just for shits & giggles, so you can go over them like nothing happens.

if you have an upgraded rear sway bar, you'll want your rear to go over bumps at the same time.

I have upgraded my RSB to a thick 24mm bar. What happens when one side is higher than the other? it causes stress on one side and WILL crack the subframe mount.

The idea is that going over at an angle "twists" the car (frame, susp, etc) causing added/un-necessary stresses.

That seems reasonable, but whether it has any impact on most cars, over a period of time, I don't know.

this is true with certain suspension designs! If the suspension is fairly firm, going over one side of the car over the speed bump and the other off is going to add a bit of stress to the frame of the car and as well the suspension.

Depending on the exact setup it can be fine or it could cause a bit of damage. If you have a VERY firm setup and as well have a beefy rear sway bar, it possible that you could tear a mount or other component with all the stress.

The best thing to do is take it over the bump slowly and go straight.

As far as going up an incline to avoid scraping, it's that twisting motion that allows you to go up without the suspension compressing on both sides so you don't scrape!

In Portland they do. This town gets bored and sixty more speed bumps show up on roads that don't even need them.

I go up the bullshit entrance to my driveway every day at an angle and my car hasn't broken in half yet.

My driveway is almost at a 40 degree angle and I do up and down it at an angle for the past 6 years and my cars are still in one piece with no torn bushings or broken frame anywhere.

I always go over speed bumps backwards.....it prevents my car from snapping in half, and reduces my routine maintenance intervals on the flux capacitor.

You don't have a flux capacitor.

Sounds like they were smoking the same stuff that put Martin Lawrence in the hospital.

Never do a woman with uneven breasts or at high speed.
If you do ... your spine will be subject to much stress, twist.
They put those speed bumps on women for a reason.
