So I got a speeding ticket last night...

I was clocked doing 55 in a 40. However he clocked me while driving in the opposite direction. Can he still get an accurate reading that will hold up in court or should I contest it?

Yes, the radars still work even when the cop is facing/driving the other direction.

But is the reading just as accurate compared to him being parked and clocking?

Well, were you doing 55 in a 40? Is it accurate or not?

yeah I try not to go more than 7 over. that seems like a sufficient enough speed, and I don't worry about a ticket.

there is actually another unit placed in the rear window in most cases.

I would think the speedometer of the police car is incorporated into the radar.
speed you're going = speed radar reports - speed police car is going

I can understand leaving that one on if you are parked so you can get traffic from both directions, but do you think they leave it on when they are driving?

if I remember correctly, as long as the the popo's radar is not perpendicular to the victim, it will read correct speed. I think it was called some tangential affect or so..

maybe you're thinking of the cosine effect

No. The cop's speedo has nothing to do with it.

Moving radar actually transmits and receives TWO radar beams...one aimed at the target, and one aimed down at the road, which reads the forward speed of the cop's car. Target's closing speed - cop's speed = the actual speed of the target.

Example: You're going 80, and approaching a cop going 55. The effective speed of your car, relative to the cop's car (the speed at which you're closing in on each other), is 80+55, or 135 mph. The moving radar clocks the cop's car at 55, and subtracts that from the closing speed of the target, 135, to get 80.

The only time a cop car's speedo is used (and is only used to measure distance, not speed) is in the VASCAR system, which is really just a sophisticated stopwatch.

...which is ALWAYS in favor of the target.

Actual speed = radar-indicated speed times cos(X)

where (X) is the angle between the radar beam and the target vehicle. The cosine of zero degrees (radar is aimed straight at the target) is 1; the cosine of 90 degrees (radar aimed at right angle to the target) is zero.

and as for those of you who swear by V1 the 2 cops that pulled me over said they all shoot out of a lazer gun.

if you get hit with radar you better hope for two things the cop feels like being nice and letting you go.....or your not speeding......they even have a new radar system now that can clock from behind.....buts as it is at the moment some states required that the cop be coming towards you or parked so that you cross him.....for the radar to hold up in court......i say take it to court and hope you win i got a ticket for 56 in a 30......clocked by radar and i had to pay 180 something but i got no points and no school so.........
