I can see where your coming from but I simply don't have the tolerance to put up with these people. I've seen the permanent emotional and physical damage drunk driving does to its victims and it's injury that could have been prevented by just picking up the phone and calling a friend or a cab. And if they aren't in a right enough mind to do so, somebody there (if there is anybody there) should man up and do it for them.

Just stupid to drive drunk, regardless of speed.
Hopefully someone will learn never to drive drunk because of OP's mishap.

Most of the students lived on campus or within walking distance, and both security and the student body assoc. had cars & vans giving rides, so that cut down on the need to drive after drinking.
Oh, and this was 25+ years ago-- the student body assoc. stopped purchasing alcohol for students by my senior year.

If you go to gainesville, FL at 2 AM, I bet you could pull over 10 random cars within 5 miles of campus and 8-9 would be DUI. Game days, I guarantee even the old men are drunk and driving

My feeling is that OP is fucked. If he comes back and say that he got off with a slap on the wrist, then I will call BS.
We don't even know if OP was arrested at all.

Just my opinion, but I don't think the punishment for DUI should be any different between any two given drivers unless they've had a previous DUI. Drinking and driving is simply that, and (IMO) is just as dangerous no matter what your age.

Many of my friends are CHP so there's always a plan and the DD gets everyone's keys at the beginning of the night. It's just so much easier to get people to give up the keys when they're sober. And to the little friend that was afraid of taking the keys, I've had a couple beligerent drunk friends take swings at me over keys. It's no big deal compared to what could happen if they drove. You should protect your friends first and the next morning have it out with them.

The very few times I ever drank and drove when I was young, I was driving better than I did sober. The thought of doing 100+mph when drunk blows my mind. If you just HAVE to do it, it only makes sense to be on your best behavior. Don't take this the wrong way, I in no way condone it.

As for the OP, I could care less if he was drunk and flipped his car, it's the innocent people that I care about. I can tell you one thing, if you hurt my family from drunk driving you better hope the police find you first.
All due respect, I don't understand how this is possible at all. I know everybody's different, but how can you drive better when your senses are all blurred and your reaction time is shot?

Because Alcohol impairs judgment. you "think" you're driving better.
All depends on your BAC. some one with a BAC of .08 or higher ends up like the OP; blacking out, doesnt know whats going on, has the need to go 100mph+, etc.

.08 is the legal limit in Texas.
not to say anything less, does not impair...your reaction time is still reduced.

I understand what you're saying. I drove ultra calm with a few beers in me. When sober I screw around sometimes. Sometimes I'll drive a little quicker than I should, brake a little harder than I should, etc. With a few beers I did none of this. I'm not talking about anything close to drunk, just a few beers.

When I was very young I got wasted at a party to the point I couldn't walk without help. My sober GF drove my GN that night. She got pulled over for accidentally spinning the tires. Just for the heck of it the cop breathalized me too and I blew a .008. I figured I should have been at least double the limit. It still would've been a DUI because I would have failed the field test but very surprising how different people are affected differently. I could literally barely walk that night. Then again even at 6'1" and 225lbs I get very buzzed off of 2 beers.

We used to see what our BAC was just about every night when we called our DD (county sheriff that is a friend) Some nights would boggle us. Other nights made us wonder if we had a drinking problem Ahh to be young again.

RIP to your TL it sucks to lose her? How about it sucks to lose your life or to kill your friend. Be thankful you did not die. I hope the OP has to serve jail time, community service, and be forced to go to AA meetings. Driving drunk is retarded, especially if your going over 100 MPH.

Probably got off easy. I know a few dudes who've been caught for DUI and they only got a suspended license and community service with no jail time. Pretty pathetic.

We've got people with 10+ DUIs driving on the road today. What's wrong with that picture? The laws aren't tough enough on DUIs.

you'd have to a 4 year old to black out from 2 beers.

beer does nothing for me anymore.. after two beers, i might as well of had a glass of milk.
but as said, everyone is different, and im glad the rules are there.

It pisses me off when a drunk a driver wrecks their car and walks home or has someone pick them up. I've heard the penalty for leaving the scene of an accident is far less than that of a DUI conviction.

I don't feel the penalties are harsh enough. First offense in NC, I think you're still allowed to drive to and from work.

My girlfriends father bought both her and her brother little portable breathalyzers for Christmas last year. I assume it's entirely inaccurate however it has made for some fun drinking games.

I think any owner with a previous DUI should have his/her car fitted with one of those breathalyzer systems connected to the ignition. Blow over a certain limit, lock out the ignition. This way, the driver can still go to where he needs to, without risking the lives of everybody on the road. I know they have something like this in some areas, but IMO needs to be widespread.

Better yet, mandate it on every new car manufactured. This should be right up there with seatbelts and airbags.
