Quoted for installation and...

I was kind of shocked. I went to one of the local tuner stores and asked how much installation would cost for my Tanabe Sustec DF210 lowering springs on my 05 TSX. The guy kinda ran through the numbers in his head and mumbled a couple things pertaining to the subject then says "you're looking at $225 for those." I havent had anything installed like this before but I was a little taken back by this price. Am I crazy or does that seem rather high? Any input on the situation would be great. Especially input from those of you who have had your springs professionally installed by a shop. Thanks!

I think anything under $250 sounds fair.

Spring compressor rental at autozone ($40 deposit) and do it yourself.

I was charged 300 for a shock/spring install at Soulspeed here in Austin. Everywhere else in town quoted me anywhere from 330-450 bucks. From what I've heard, Soulspeed is one of the better shops in Austin and they did a great job on my car.

I was expecting 200-250 at most, but sadly we don't live in Socal. While 100-150 is common there, 200-250 is about the norm here.

i was quoted $300 just for springs, no shocks. although i ended up doing it myself because it was pretty easy and, like o2cls said, it didn't cost my anything but the $40 rental at autozone which i got back when i returned the spring compressors.

it's really not hard to change springs. you should learn about it and try it yourself. you'll learn a lot about your cars suspension and you can save yourself a lot of money.

spring compressors, the usual tools that come with a tool box, and jack stands to raise your car.

It is pretty simple and really straight forward, give it a shot. It will probably take an entire day, but at least youd be saving $200+

If that includes an alignment that's a smoking deal.

As for those rented spring compressors I wouldn't recommend anyone use them, they are incredibly unsafe, more so with someone who lacks experience. Wall mounted spring compressor or I wouldn't even think of risking it for that little. I have seen not one but two springs fly out of those little spring compressors, its very scary to see happen.

If you use them incorrectly they are unsafe and can malfunction, but if you are careful its really not that hard. And rarely do the springs have enough force on them to fly across a room. For instance the Evo's springs barely make a pop when you undo the top mount they couldnt even jump off the shock.

As far as the springs on a TSX not sure, but spring compressor are safe if used properly.

If you've used a wall mounted spring compressor there is no comparison, you cannot have an accident(unless of course your a complete fool). Someone who lacks experience doing suspension work is more likely to use those little compressors incorrectly and thus injure themselves, bottom line is if you have any doubts, don't risk it. Not only do you risk damaging your car, but yourself.

If you can get someone who has done it a few times before to give you a hand then go for it.

As for not having enough force to fly across the room, I'm not sure how many springs you've done or on what cars, but I've done several hundred sets of springs and 90% have enough force to kill someone if released suddenly

That makes sense, typically "sport" springs and lowering springs don't need much if any compressing to take apart(or put back together), a Ford Escort on the other hand has enough force to literally rip someone's head off.

Dude around here is the best suspension/tire shop in the area. He even does Mercedes Software lowering and calibrations on benz's with air suspension. He only charges $40 for coil over shocks and $20 for struts. For$250 i can get the suspension installed and get a wheel alignment.

my buddy was drunk and launched a spring through dry wall and some concrete. It was awesome.
