Still trying to figure out what wheels to go with on the NSX long term. Love the TEs on everything as well but also really like CEs as well. You can get more concave wheels with CEs than TEs with the big brake kit I have I think. To get anything with concase in the front I would have to get wider fenders for the car. Don't think I will ever go the route of doing a widebody kit but some slightly wider front fenders to get a better wheel size front and back I would consider.

They are classic, classy and easy to clean...lightweight, quality...and already on the car.

TEs are light and a classic for sure. CEs are lighter though. Has been nice having a super easy wheel to clean.

Saw some amazing looking BBS LM on a BMW is a brushed bronze translucent finish. Just don't think I can fit them over my calipers. Not sure it is worth changing out the brake kit to fit wheels. Long term would really like an 18/19 lip wheel setup for around town driving and the 17/18 TEs I have with some sticky track mountain weekend trip tires on them. Or maybe be crazy and just do two sets of TE37 in different colors.

There are definitely a lot of knockoffs of them that is for sure.

 

I like a classic look but I think sentimental value and other people telling you they are amazing is what is making bbs and ccw so friggin expensive...

CEs do look great on the car but do I want two cars with the same wheels. If I go with wide front fenders I could have front and rear concave ZE40 with are like a modern CE28.

I agree they look great if I can get confirmation they fit over my brakes.

Indeed it looks good with front and rear concase TEs with that widebody kit. The hood and wing are in my plans even if I don't go wide body though.

Don't get me wrong I love the current setup as it is but I do agree with J that everyone just thinks I am driving the previous owners car that knows the car. Especially cause the car is still in the same city even. Ordering the new more agressive fitment TEs like the ones pictured in the in white on black above would allow me to run larger tires as well since they are much wider. I only have 17x7 in the front right now and those are 17x8.5 in the front on that one.

So if I order wider bronze or white TE37 do I do these in the opposite color or raspberry, takata, or gold?

I did just realize I passed through your neck of the woods twice now. I picked up my FD back in 9/2011 from Raleigh and this past year I drove my white 4Runner back from Philly and passed through Charlotte back in January. Next time I'll call ahead and check out your fleet in person haha.

 

So probably more likely to happen before new wheels is I need to figure out a working radio. The volume knob on the current aftermarket deck just jumps all over the place when you turn it so you have to pause the music first and then turn it till it finally gets to the level you are looking for then turn the music back on. If you don't do it this way you run the risk of the volume jumping to twice the previouis level sometimes. I thought I could deal with it and move it down the list but it really is just annoying. Couple that with the ok fitting dash kit the center console needs to come apart to fix that at least so might as well upgrade something one way or another.

I currently have an aftermarket Clarion NX500. It is really old but I guess that is fitting for the interior of the car.


The install looks something like this except it is using a carbon fiber dash kit instead. The fit on the carbon dash panel is not perfect but it isn't terrible.





Option 1: Just upgrade to a newer Double Din Unit using the current carbon dash panel and try to make it fit better. I would either go with the Pioneer Avic-W8400NEX or the Kenwood Excelon DNX995S. Both are wireless Android Auto compatible. The Kenwood can do negative screen tilt which would help reduce a bit of the glare issue the NSX has because of the dash angle.

Option 2: Upgrade the radio and get a new custom carbon dash kit that has been designed to change the angle of the radio and help with the glare issue the NSX has from the dash angle.

Option 3: Have a factory radio gutted and upgraded bya company called Willman with a newer system inside. This leaves most of the buttons on the factory radio not work but retains the factory look. The new radio also has bluetooth, aux input, usb input, handfree calling.

next option would be to just replace the unit with a newer version so you can just unplug and plug in another clarion.

I dig Pioneer but have Alpine in my S2000 and that makes me happy...biggest deal to me was getting one with
custom color for buttons so I could adjust it to match the oem dial colors.

 

 

i'd get an android one... they are leaps and bounds ahead of where they used to be... and you can load the apps directly as you see fit...

You read my mind too well about the matching color buttons. I hate that the current buttons are blue and I can't change them. Both the Kenwood and Pioneer have RGB LED buttons with preset colors but also the options to set your own custom presets and mess with it till you are happy so I would more than likely be able to find almost a perfect match to the redish orange of the factory AC unit buttons above it.

Alpines offering on Android Auto is severly lacking compared to Kenwood and Pioneer.

The Kenwood is my preffered unit cause the screen is much better quality. Besides the screen quality though the units are basically the same. The Kenwood does have 5V preout vs 4V preout on the Pioneer.

The Kenwood is around $1200 and the Pioneer normally $1100 but right now the Pioneer is on sale for $750 at an Authorized dealer with a additional $200 rebate which almost makes it a no brainer.


Yeah I was reading that too. One of the reason I was looking at the Kenwood unit since it has the reverse tilt feature and that plus the new radio angle is supposed to be the best you can possibly get. I wish someone would make one with the same screen quality as a phone. We have these awesome AMOLED screens in phone that would be perfect in a double din radio unit but with most cars these days not even able to use an aftermarket radio it is a dieing market for them to invest in.

Like an actual Android headunit or an Android Auto headunit? Most of the ones I have seen in the past have used resistive touch displays instead of capacitive which are so much better. Both the Kenwood and Pioneer have capactive and can do things like pinch to zoom in apps. The Kenwood is only in consideration cause it has a 1280x720 screen instead of the standard 800x480 everything else still uses.

It would be really cool if there was a way to utilize the buttons and knobs of the factory radio to control a screen (that displayed AA and all the other radio menus) that sits in the upper display bin. That would be ideal and the most OEM looking.

What is the existing upper screen used for now?

That's along the same lines as what I was thinking, just better...run the modded factory radio and mount an Android tablet in place of the second screen. He could even get a Project Fi sim card for it so it's not dependent on the phone.

 

Seats look like the seats in the RDX, go figure....

 

These are the two options I vote for. I like the factory look or OEM+ style. I did the same for my 4Runner build, went for an OEM look and bought an asian unit that fit the wider Toyota opening with Toyota connectors built in. I like the Kenwood unit mainly because of the capacitive touch screen. I have the DDX917WS unit but this year they updated it to the DDX918WS.




Anyway I'd vouch for the Kenwood unit for sure. I love the CarPlay / Android Auto capability. Really brings the truck into the current era of cars.

 

I'm biased. I have the Willmans unit. It costs more nowadays but is worth the coin. Stock look, modern conveniences. I don't need no double-din, I've got a smartphone for navi.

Edit: Test run as I was installing in my car just about three years ago. I even tricked mine out with satellite radio.

The upper screen is for a Magden OBD2 gaauge computer. Two owners ago installed the box for it but never finished wiring it up. Its claim to fame is that it is the gague display that was used in Paul Walkers blue R34 in fast and furious. It's a cool concept but the box is the size of a small form factor PC. Something you can do with a Android tablet now.

The top screen is using a JDM nav pod housing to mount it . Haven't even ruled out removing it completely yet either. Maybe once it has a function it won't be bad there.

If I so an Android auto nav screen I can always use DashCommand for gauges too.

 

​​​​​​​Putting a tablet up top wouldn't be a bad idea but it is fairly far out of the way to use the touch screen from the driver's seat. Wouldn't really be able to interact with it much in the car easily.

I really like the concept. Prefer the original screen and not the most recent update of it. The controls leave a little lacking too but I do love that it has the factory original look.

 

The Willmans unit comes with a remote. With mine, the remote is small enoough to fit in the coin tray when I'm driving. However I dont't need it much as the volume knob controls most functions.

 

This update is a little late since this has been in since the beginning of December but I decided to go with the Pioneer W8400 radio. The deal was just too good to pass up cost wise compard to everything else. Is it the perfect radio maybe not but at half the cost of either of the other options I am definitely happy with it. Android Auto is also pretty great. Definitely is not perfect but I really like it so far for the most part.

The radio and the Anker USB-C cable I ordered to use for wired Android Auto and charging. Most of the time I am just using it wirelessly though around town.

Wiring mess from the older radio. I have no idea what the thing in the big chunk of red heat shrink was for but it was wired in line with the power wire.


So the fitment of the small coin pocket and the shifter trim was terrible on this dash piece. Honestly the whole dash piece fits pretty terrible but with the cost of what a new one is I decided to make the best of this one for the time being. Two of the screws to mout the coin pocket and the back of the shiftboot hat broken off of the trim piece. Did all this before starting the rest of the radio install so the glue had time to cure.




It wasn't an ideal solution and hopefully it won't be hard to find one at a later date when I get a new trim piece but I ended up glueing the screws back in place and also glueing the coin pocket to the trim piece as well since it allowed me an easier way to align the screws.

Back to the radio install. Mounted the GPS antenna on the metal JDM Nav Pod bracket to hide it. Previous radio just had it thrown on the dash in plain view.

Ran all the new wires for all the extra connections to the radio.


Once the glue had dried I put the dash piece back together. Things fit much better now even if the panel doesn't fit in the console without a somewhat large gap by the ebrake handle.








Everything all put back together. The W8400 has an Android and Apple USB connection. I used the Android one for my USB-C cable for AndroidAutu and the Apple one for a USB extension cable to use with either my iPod or a USB thumbdrive with FLAC files on it. I love the fact that I can pick the button light and background color to be amber to match the factory lights. I know it is a small thing but I think it makes the interior look much cleaner.

The new radio sounds much better than the old one as well so it wasn't just a cosmetic upgrade or just a fix for the bad volume knob of the radio. I think the old radio itself might have been going bad too since the audio sounds better and less distorted. I had actually already bought new speakers to use in a stereo upgrade once I decide on a new amp and now I am not 100% sure I want to go through all that work to do the stereo upgrade. I mean stock speakers are not anything to write home about but they don't sound terrible either.

This past weekend my new plate showed up too. I finally just went with one and might end up changing it every year.

 

Nice upgrade! Looks much better in there.
