EPA ratings on the 99 Accord 5MT are 25/31. You should be able to hit 30mpg on the highway easily.

This has 21/28: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/15104.shtml

Maybe since EPA calculation has changed since 1999.

Anyway, 26 is about what I get with my 4 cyl. 2000 Accord Coupe.

Those probably are the recalculated numbers. I was looking at the EPA guide published in 98 for model year 99.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/epadata/99feg.pdf

Ive never asked my sister what she used to average on the highway in her coupe (not that I cared though).

Then again, the EPA rates my car at 26mpg highway and I average 31mpg, so those numbers really dont hold much weight anyway.

Sorry for the late answer. Yeah I have a little rust spot on the rear wheel well "lips"...not sure what I'm doing about it just yet. Other than that, no rust. I don't let salt sit on it too long in the winter.

The things to watch when buying 6GA's are:
transmission (if auto)
EGR port (would throw a CEL)
ignition (there was a recall)
main relay (car has trouble starting in hot weather - not hard to fix)

Kinda hard to see on a test drive, but I think the F-series had issues with oil consumption as well. See what the owners says.

I drove the car last night and it's pretty nice for a 12 year old car. It has one ding ont he drivers' side and a small indentation on the hood that i almost didn't notice.
Tires are brand new and there is just a small hint of rust on the wheelwell that can be taken care of.

It drove like a honda should. No leaks and everything works. It will need front brakes as it shakes a bit when braking. I couldn't tell if it was the clutch since it seemed like it shook more when it was in gear and braking.
But it's just the front rotors. They have an aftermarket alpine cd player that does not play cd's. So basically i would have to put about $300 into it plus an oil and brake fluid change.

I offered $3500 and cited my resources and deductions for brakes and radio, and also included the good condition on the car.

He said the figure they had in mind was $4000. He'll get back to me and hopefully we can meet in the middle. I'd pay $3700. If i decide to sell in 3-4 years i should still get most of that money back.

It's all good. You'll always be an Accord owner at heart, and I'm sure you'll come back to the right side once again.

So my 03 4 cylinder is at 125k, and I'll be doing the valve adjustment and serpentine belt change soon. What about the water pump? Didn't mention anything in the service manual, but the V6s require it changed at 105k obviously. Should I be worried?

Thanks for the validation.

When I had my timing belt replaced they said they'd inspect the water pump and let me know if I should replace it or not. Of course they suggested replacing it so I did, but I'm not sure about the 4 cylinders. I'd say if the service schedule doesn't call for it there's probably no reason to be alarmed if it's not replaced.

I think it's a pretty good deal, at least without seeing the car. I'd say if it's in the kind of shape where you could confidently pack a bag and drive across the country with little worry about its getting you there, then $4,000 is a good deal.

I'd at least plan on spending $100 or so and have a mechanic do a pre purchase inspection.

The v6's recommend it then since the motor is half apart for a new timing belt at 105K. The 4 cylinders have chains which don't need replacement. Ask them how much money it would be to put in a new waterpump (labor) while doing the serpentine belt and valves vs. just doing it later down the road.

Back to the mileage question, I decided to check mine, since it's been a while. I put 12.77 gallons in the tank tonight and travelled 406 miles since the previous fill up. That's 31.8 mpg for a 4 cyl 2000 Accord Coupe with over 175K miles. That's better than I remember, but I have noticed I get quite a bit better mileage with Yokohama Envigors (I use Blizzaks for winter). Surprisingly, I don't think I averaged better than 26 on the old Michelin all seasons, even though the company makes fuel efficiency a selling point.

There's so many other factors than just the brand of tire to contribute to the better gas mileage. Time of year (% of ethonal in gas in winter/summer), temperature outside, windows up/down, A/C on/off, tire pressure, amount of wear on tires, brand of gas, amount of time since last oil change, age of air filter or spark plugs, etc. Just say'n.

Good point. I was looking for the largest change since last recording the distance and amount of gas used. I did notice that I have consistently gone further between fill ups with the Yokohamas, however.

Seems like a good deal, but how in depth did you look at the rust areas? My Civic had a "small" spot of rust on the rear wheel well. I pulled the bumper bumper off and was surprised to see how much metal was missing.

Rust is like a cancer. It will eat from the inside, and it's usually MUCH deeper than what is advertised on the surface.

There's nothing quite like washing and waxing and old car on a sunny day. I thought I'd take a couple of quick photos. No mods and pretty plain compared to most of the cars of this thread, but it's a 2000 Accord with over 175,000 miles on it, regularly exposed to dirt roads, downtown parking garages, snow, ice, salt and hordes of insects, among other things. Still, the most reliable car I've ever owned.

Oh yeah, I forgot, they have a reputation for going bad. The tranny is original. It once threw a check engine light for a missed shift, but that was over a year ago, with no problems since.

The only non-original, not common wear parts are the radiator, a few hoses, the oil pan (dirt and gravel beats on the underside) and quite a bit of the suspension. I'll have to get its second timing belt /water pump replacement before too long, along with the engine seals this time.

Carraway that car doesn't look like it had 175k on it. Nicely done sir.
