Go from tsx to sti?

I've had my tsx since oct 05. It was my first car and i love it to death. Modding it, seeing it change, and people saying how much they like the car is a great reward.

My brother gets his license in october and drives my car with his permit now since im at school and can't have it here freshman year. He likes it and wants it for himself when he gets his license. Now im possibly left with no car.

Getting a used sti is what i wanna do. From what i've seen, they go anywhere from 23k-28k. Ive loved the sti for awhile and everytime I see my friend in his i drool.
My question really is if its a good move to do this? The luxury of an Acura to a Subaru. Obviously performance wise its a no brainer, but the other things. What do you guys think?

ps- no my parents aren't paying for the entire thing. My brother would be paying me for the tsx + my money. Parents would probably only contribute alittle bit. I'm not spoiled, i love cars and my tsx is kept cleannnn.

a TON of people complain about the harsh ride...you'll especially notice it since you're comming from a TSX. Just be careful about that.

I nearly went from a TSX to a STI limited, but I wanted more refinement, also I was used to a rev happy engine which the STI is not.

The G35 is about the same as an STI in terms of price(I think) and is more of a sport luxury car then either, ie a good balance between the two.

Well I hope you're not going to be paying for your own insurance at your age, or your as good as bankrupt for insuring a STi at the age of 19 on your own.

Doesn't matter even if they did, what's nice about this board vs. some other forums.....is that "most" people here don't hate on others for good fortune.

That aside, I had an 04 STi and my buddy has an 06. Its somewhat improved from the 04 I had, but still not what I would call plush. The Limited definitely helps the interior over the standard model (those little extra features go a long way).

The STi is getting a redesign sooner rather than later. At this point I wouldn't get the current model, its starting to show its age a bit.

Do your research. You have to factor in the insurance premium, and most importantly the maintenance cost to keep that sTi on the road.

If you aren't used to wrenching on your own car, get ready to come out the pocket for maintenance and so much for mods because your warranty will be gone. Ever since my car left the dealership brand new, it has never gone back for maintenance. I do everything myself and I make sure its done right.

Right now, my evo which has 11000 miles needs new tires which cost nearly $300 a piece. Changing the diff fluid, transmission fluid, synthetic oil etc etc has cost me an arm and leg so far... not to mention i am going to need a new clutch very soon.

I hope this helps.

Well, I'm a bit of a :noob: for insurance, but don't insurance payments go down after the age of 25?

i'd say "do it."

i'd love to own a sti. mandatory mods would be a trunk swap to go wingless and lowered suspension.

that's all i'd want.

Also depends on driving record. I had a ticket in my turbo integra years back. I was doing 110 in a 45. It sounds bad but it was midnight no cars on the road , not racing anyone. It was on a service road in a warehouse district. Cop was not hearing it and gave me a court date. I had 3 pionts on my lic, but here in FLA it stays for 3 years.

my insurance is around $700 semi annually for my EVO.

Not one moving violation since spring of 2001. In 2000 I got caught going 130 in my TL plus a u turn ticket... I paid close to 3600 every 6 months... I drove like a total idiot.

In other words, clean record, and still under 25, you're gonna get owned on insurance.

Hope you win the lottery soon OP.

You can expect to pay $250-$300 a month with a clean driving record. My friends little brother pays $265 on his wrx, and hes 19 with a clean driving record.

IX's are already discontinued. There is no 2007 Evo IX in the US.

The STi does not have a harsh ride. It is a comfortable DD.

If you get the car you should save your money to pay for what the insurance is going to cost you. And you probably shouldnt plan on modding it until you can really afford to fix something if it goes wrong.

If you can afford the insurance, I'd say do it. You're young and seem to have a good head on your shoulders.

In many ways I wish I'd have gotten an STi or Evo for my first "after college" car. Have a little more fun with a car like that, though I do love my TSX.

The mods available for a STi are almost limitless.

Keep the "hard" driving on the track, STi's are great autocross/roadcourse cars.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

LOL....harsh ride in a TSX? It felt buttery smooth when my dealer gave it as a loaner.

I actually think the TSX does have a bit harsher ride, Honda's in general over Toyota IMO let you feel the road a bit more.

Anyway to the OP. I'd go all the way with an STi, espcially when it snows you'll love it. I'm going to pick up an S2000 sometime within the next 30 days so we can all compare notes (virtualbong is moving to a 350z or G35 Coupe).

I've driven my friends STi (Spec C engine swapped) and it's a beast. You'll definately have fun knowing that with 5k in bolt on's you're not a push over anymore.

I can tell you right now that you'll pour a lot more money into the STi than you would've into a TSX.

He's saying the STi has a harsh ride, not the TSX.

But I wouldn't call the TSX ride buttery smooth either.

I think he was saying that the STI has a harsh ride, especially if you're going to that from a TSX.

EDIT: Damn, Dom beat me to it...

My clutch is fine, but I need an upgrade to handle the extra horsepower. I plan on tracking the car once a month once my suspension is done.

If my car was daily driven, I would have no problem getting 40-60k miles on this clutch. Its flawless.

Are you going to be bringing your car to college next year? College parking lots are not good places to keep cars and while I personally wouldn't want to bring either car on campus, is there one in particular that might hurt you more for inevitable dings/scratches? Also, I see you have a ride from college and if you are going to be making the trip often I'd say TSX for sure. It would also draw less attention in a parking lot...

^ Someone tried to steal my evo late at night on valentines day with a flatbed truck from our condominium gated garage. They intercommed my neighbors pretending to be a resident and locked out. Caught the guys snooping in neighbors cars looking for garage clickers with their tow truck parked right outside.

Changed the garage code, I have a new alarm, and I have a car parked behind the evo at all times now.

You might want to becareful of theft but I m not sure how it is in CT.

Why not just get a used 2002-2004 Civic EX? It would be the perfect DD as it saves on gas, maintenance and insurance.

True, it's not luxurious by any stretch of the word, but it offers a lot for the money. I personally wouldn't bring a nice car to college as there are too many idiots out there who might take an occasional smack to it.

The money you save would help you out so much (read: drinking money, and savings)

Amen to that. A guy brought an escalde down to campus and had that thing keyed the first weekend.. he didn't bring it back down after that.

I've seen countless cars vandalized, someone pissed on my car and I caught him in the act. Since my back was thrown out and I was outnumbered 5-1 I called the cops and they booked him.

I traded my TSX in for an 04 STI in 2005. It was by far the worst mistake i could have made.
My situation was different as i had a wife and two kids and the STI was my daily driver and main family car (I know dumb mistake).

The sti is a great car but it is a one dimensional vehicle- go fast! I eventually got tired of having every punk in town revving and trying to race and missed the creature comforts of my TSX like the power seats, audio controls on the steering wheel, built in NAV, quiet ride and leather seats.

In the end I would love to have kept both vehicles and used the STI as my pleasure vehicle and not my daily machine. I still miss my TSX to this day.

The thing that bothers me is that dodge will have the same platform with the evo. That means nothing, but it does When there are to cars that share the same platform, that always means there will be parts that will have a common denominator. I can't have that. I would rather walk than to buy a car with dodge parts
