General Car Talk Discussion Thread
VW doesn't think we buy hatches in the quantities they need to justify both a two door Golf and a Scirocco. For the same reason that Audi isn't bringing the A3 Sportback here except as a hybrid.
This girl I was dating recently called it a fun-sized mini van... We are not dating anymore
I'm sorry, I thought this was America
The R&T review was effusive about the WRX and STI on the track. I think that's a tremendous accomplishment. It seems to be a lot like how Chris Harris described the A45 in his review against the M135i. And for between $25-30K the WRX might end up being so freakin' fast at the track that it simply won't matter what it looks like.
If it smokes the GTI, the Focus ST, and anything else in its price range, I'll shut up about how it looks because it'd be idiotic to dismiss a car that good because Subaru is on an acid trip right now.

good read on the F12. That color combo looks amazing too

Any on the market right now at the $312,000 MSRP has 4-5,000 miles on it, making the average price for one with around 1,000 or less miles in the $400,000+ range.
As a front-engined Ferrari, is this going to last though? Or be like the other front-engined models from Modena and become quite affordable in 10 years?
Pre-2000 Maranellos are still hovering around $80,000 w/ 25,000+ miles. The pre-2000 360s are barely scratching $80,000 with 20,000 miles; give or take. 2004 360s are in the range of $95-$105,000 on average; you have some in the low $90Ks & some in the low $110Ks. (It's a bit weird.) 2004 Maranellos aren't dipping below $110K (though the 2003MY is all over the place).
Take also into account the mileage. The range for the cars above are typically 10-30,000 miles. Anything under 10,000 on the odo for a 360 are valuing at $110,000 for the 04s & $85-$90K for pre-'00. Meanwhile, the '04 Maranellos with under 10,000 are valuing $120K & the pre-'00 Maranellos at $100,000 max. You have '05 F430s with under 10,000 miles that have dropped to the same range as the '04 Maranellos ($120-125K), & this is what forces the 360 market to drop more. The 458 will eventually do it to the F430 as well.
Basically, Maranellos are retaining a $10,000+ value over the 360s for similar year & mileage. 599s are holding a $30-50K value over the F430s. I'm not sure how that makes the front-engine GTs more affordable than the mid-engine V8s of their respective era.

That's my problem. I like a lot of cars. Many out of my price range

I see what you did there.
I figured I might add, while I love GTIs, I think they're a little boring. I haven't driven a Golf R but it's never mind the feeling like you're on rails with the AWD... the STI and Evo just feel raw and they egg you on to push them harder.
They just never seriously made it onto my list of cars to consider. Though I'm sure the in-car entertainment options suck on both the Subaru and Mitsubishi. Awful stock stereos in every one I've been in.

As much fun as it sounds, I don't think there's any way I could spend $35k+ for this front end.

All that plastic around the fog lights and the top quarter of the grille is so bad. And it looks like the factory pre-drills the bumper for the license plate, too. I pretty much only like the headlights and hood scoop.
I don't think the rear is bad, though.
But overall, couple all that with the 10-year old EJ engine, it throws all consideration out.

I wish Mitsubishi didn't make the MR trim on the Evo automatic transmission only. And the GSR trim has the outdated 5-speed manual.
Black leather upgrade is $3800... Ah well I see the upgrade falls under the sunroof & leather package, so you also get sunroof, heated front seats, center console upgrade, and sound dampening enhancement. It also looks like they throw in the sight and sound upgrade also which gives HID headlights, audio upgrade, and keyless entry.
Navigation is another $2375. Overall $42k for a well-equipped Evo. Also considering this model could use an upgrade.
I do see Mitsubishi is offering 0% APR for the Evolution, though. At least there's something.

The progression of Ferraris blows my mind. You look back at the lineage and think about it, having driven a 348, 355, 360 and now a 458, holy cow the 458 is a bonafide supercar whereas the others were more like entry-level Ferraris. But I think furthermore it says something about where cars are today in general, all the current advances they've made. The 458 is a SPECTACULAR car, it does not feel like a "junior" level Ferrari at all. And, it's crazy that the F12 can be traced back to the Testarossa. Ok enough rambling for now
I'm still not sure where you get this from. The front-engine GTs always retain a higher value than their MR V8 sisters of the same era because Ferrari pump out the V8s in much higher numbers, at lower costs.

It's hard to really pinpoint 456 values, though. Not a whole lot on the market.
It's tough to say without digging into them. There are arguably more F1 transmissions out there but a lot of dealers still mark the car as having manuals when they have the F1 paddle shift. I don't think the transmissions are really affecting the price too much though. They weren't exactly a rare option in the 360 & the 550/575 basically had manual/paddle shift transmissions respectively.

You boys see Mercedes-Benz's three 360° videos?
Quite cool. Link here: http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...-degree-videos

Still, even if these rides were affordable, to maintain one would bankrupt me...so, a rather moot point.

Have you guys seen this?
Freaking Lexus not having a 6MT option on IS350. That would be a nice DD.
