Yet R&T says the car isn't as fun as the 930 Turbo and has therefore lost something.

It's $200k or as Clarkson would say, "Near as makes no difference."

I honestly think the R&T guys spend too much time in supercars. They've lost touch with reality.

That's weird though - because the 2011 911 Turbo S ran the 1/4 in 10.8 sec at 129 mph. I remember because I was so amazed when I first heard about that that I created a separate thread for it

The 2014 is about 125lbs heavier and despite the extra 30hp it clearly isn't quite as fast at the top end. Both cars are ridiculous but I wonder what else changed that slowed the 2014 down. Or maybe C&D has a better driver.

Running of the Bulls at COTA - Feb. 22nd
Ferrari Challenge Series @ COTA - March 1-2nd
BMW CCA @ COTA - March 21-23rd.

Already going to the Ferrari event, wonder how much trouble I'd get into calling in "sick" to go to the Lamborghini event.

Personally, I'd go with the WRX. But, that's just because if I was to buy a Volkswagen hatch, I'd prefer the Scirocco or a Golf R if I was restricted to that model.

Well you cant get scirooco here sadly.

But golf R compares to STI. So which would you take in that case?

Out of that duo, I would probably still lean with the Subaru. I've just never been a hatch guy, and this is with me believing that the R actually looks better than the STi. But, the idea of a sporty sedan with a manual just appeals to me more. That and again, still prefer the Scirocco if I had to buy a VW hatch even if it isn't available here.

Off the cuff, Subaru. I would definitely have to drive both to give a real opinion on them.

I'd take a Golf R and slap a tune from APR or someone.

I don't think it's conclusive of anything; just something to wonder about. Also Porsche could have sent them a ringer for the 2011 test.

full C&D test result here:
http://i877.photobucket.com/albums/a...randdriver.jpg

hmm R&T also tested the 2011 and got 10.7 @ 128.9
http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-revi...he-power-of-12

you generally think new models have been progressively getting faster and faster, maybe this is not always the case (?)

I think the WRX is an abomination. Plus, the interior is cheap. The GTI might be slower but it is a much better looking car with what I'm betting is a much better interior. Subaru has shown me that they are going after volume with bland, boring designs and cheapened cars. They are no longer an option for me.

Wish I had the time to make it out for a few of those. Really hoping to make it to the F1 race this year.

Interestingly, I also saw a mention in a forum of how BMW M vehicles have a take rate of 44% no source though.
Thank you. I was hoping it wasn't this article from May 2012. Dave.

Good to see the trend seems to be going upwards.

Edmunds.com calculated the "take rate" of manuals for Drive On. The 2012 calculation is for the first quarter of the year. The others are full-year:

2012 - 6.5%
2011 - 3.8%
2010 - 3.9%
2009 - 4.4%
2008 - 3.7%
2007 - 2.9%
2006 - 7.2%
2005 - 6.7%
2004 - 5.5%
2004 - 5.5%
2003 - 8.2%
2002 - 8.5%
I wonder what the other three quarters of 2012 came out to be, as well as 2013.

I wouldn't consider one in 1000 years. If it's not the BRZ, I'll take a rain check on the rest of the Subaru lineup.

R&T loves them some 2015 STi. http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-revi...subaru-wrx-sti

At least if it were a hatch you could hide some of the ugly.

Assumedly you could tune the 2.0T too.

But I was just generally surprised how close the two were. And how much quicker the BMW ZF auto is to 60 than a stick.

Tune can definitely be a factor in dealership denying the warranty work.

The dealers can tell if the car was tuned or not even if we install the stock tune before going in.

I generally don't really mind the 0-60 or quarter mile times, but yeah, I don't know why these cars are getting slower.

You ever drive the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO? Those are a hoot too...likely cheaper too in the used market.

Of course, I have. Both stock and modded ones. EVOs are incredible machines as well.

But for some reason, I like WRX and STi more.

I'm generally a fan of Japanese pocket rockets. It's so FUN to drive. The pricing on these cars are very reasonable for what they are. That's just me.

Yeah, just a better ceiling on the six than the four (obviously).

So many automatics now are very quick. Some, of course, still suck badly but there are a number that are quite good.

Interesting. I think the EVOs are more true "rockets"...with Subaru being a bit more tamer for the general masses.

I remember driving the VII a few years ago and noted how bumpy the ride was and the interior was rattling like crazy. It was essentially only fun for the driver...passenger, not so much (my GF thought it was a horrible car to sit in).

The Subaru Impreza WRX I test-drove a year later was also a riot...but, seemed less...extreme than the EVO. GF also complained less about the ride quality.

EVO has always been a little more rockety than STI both in stock form. WRX has been much, much less rockety than STI and EVO. It was in the different league.

But all the reviews have been praising how WRX feels more like last generation STi with all the upgraded components especially in the suspension dept.

I like the way Clarkson put it way back with the Evo VII vs STi. Evo is more like a fighter & the STi more like a fighter-bomber.

Really hoping to, my dad's birthday is in November, so I'd like to take him. I don't think tickets are on sale yet. Only thing I've seen so far was MotoGP.

I actually like the STI, it's just more money than I'm willing to part with. The temptation to mod heavily is another thing. Can't have that on my daily.

I have gotten pickier, but the STI's interior is still okay to me. The big problem is that they're still using the old EJ25 when the WRX gets a new FA20. There's no way the STI continues on with the old lump for the rest of its model lifespan... I'd hope.

Of the three I think I would go with Golf R, STI, then EVO.

I prefer STI over evo's for some reason. I've driven neither so I can't say on that, but on the road I've seen a lot nicer STI's. Plus the STI sounds much better IMO. All that said, the new Golf R, with close to 300 hp (hoping thats the same for America too) is gonna give the STI a run for its money!

I admire you. You're the modern sensitive man that can overlook the fat girl with the busted grille because she makes you laugh. That's an honorable quality.

It'd be nice if it didn't make me go (even reflexively) whenever I saw a picture of the car.

The Golf R is going to have 300hp, I have little doubt of that.

The issue really is that the Haldex system on the track is not as good as the Subie's open diff on the WRX or the system on the STI.

But I'm 42. I operate on the Kristin Scott Thomas principle. And there's no way I'm picking up a date in a car with a wing like the STI. Yes, the R looks like a Golf diesel, which is still a good looking car. I wish it was a little bit more aggressive though I can live with it. But it doesn't drive like a Golf diesel and that's enough for me.

I'm sorry, I thought this was America

The R&T review was effusive about the WRX and STI on the track. I think that's a tremendous accomplishment. It seems to be a lot like how Chris Harris described the A45 in his review against the M135i. And for between $25-30K the WRX might end up being so freakin' fast at the track that it simply won't matter what it looks like.

If it smokes the GTI, the Focus ST, and anything else in its price range, I'll shut up about how it looks because it'd be idiotic to dismiss a car that good because Subaru is on an acid trip right now.
