Honestly, the Golf R would be perfect. Low key. Comfortable. Capable. I love the way it looks inside and out.

The Achilles heel on the manual is the clutch, which is a big deal for me. Replacing it wouldn't be something I would do myself, and having driven various cars with aftermarket clutches, I can't remember one that I was really happy with. Big investment to take a chance on, and would feel bad if I hated the driving experience afterwards.

I am a stubborn dinosaur and honestly would be fine with a DCT. But as J alluded to, the "if only" thought would linger in the back of my mind. Multiple cars would make this so much easier, but space and dedication are my problems.
Buy the DCT and use the "if only" as an excuse to get another car in manual. Problem solved. This is what I'm doing (Shelby GT350) as soon as I figure out a way to get another car in my garage... The DCT in the R is really quite good and I haven't looked back on getting a manual. As soon as you feel the full throttle launch control start with the DCT, you'll be sold. Also, the adaptive cruise will bring you to a complete stop and start up again with the auto.

I agree, so use the paddles when you want to drive, let the car drive when you don't. Best of both worlds.

Honestly, after having a car with adaptive cruise, I couldn't go without it ever again. It's so nice to just hit the go button for a highway jaunt and just sit back and let the car deal with the idiots on the road who can't maintain consistent speed. Same for traffic jam assist, don't need to deal with the gas, brake, honk nonsense. Just sit back and let the car deal with it.

Fun when you want, easy when you don't.

My gripe with adaptive cruise is that it's too cautious. Both the Golf and the CRV will leave multiple car lengths between you and the car ahead, even on the shortest distance setting. The problem is, there's plenty of space for someone to get in front of you, causing you to slow down and then speed up (assuming they actually sped up), wasting gas and causing a ripple effect in the traffic behind you. It's fine on a wide open road with little to no traffic, but if I could disable adaptive cruise and just have standard "dumb" cruise, I'd be much happier.

I keep mine on the default setting and am fine with it, sometimes I'll lower it to the second to closest but I've never gone to the closest setting lol. I use it all the time and have few to any gripes with it, the driving habits of people around here are probably different but it really shines on longer highway drives. The eyesight system on the Subie is FAR less refined in how it reacts to stuff, the radar based version in the VW is much better.

Or it could've had a valve job and stiffer springs installed to handle higher rpm/more boost

Wouldn't he have said that as a selling point?

I would.

Regardless I would not want a car with that amount of mods on the motor.

I wouldn't either. But it's possible he also has no idea what else is done - which is no better

I should have said that I wouldn't want a car with that many mods that I did not know were done correctly.

Mods never add value. That car, at that mileage, is about $5-8k too much.

With the right wheels, this looks like it could be an awesome DD/street killer. It might make more sense as a DD than a second car, however.

Are BMW 1M's still astronomically expensive?

Agreed, I was just asking if that's the year & model he was referring to.

It does look cool. I really want a two door RWD manual. But who knows. I really don't want a car someone has modded and potentially abused.

Not a fan of those wheels or that stance. Stance like that reminds me of wagon wheels.

Yes to 1M being horrifically overpriced (and fugly) imho.

I'd be afraid to sit in it forget about driving.

My grail car is that exact combination. Silver on blue plaid.

I got to ride in a Red/Tan '57 years ago when in college. Pretty amazing how hard it pulls for what was a 50 year old car.
I, too, was a bit nervous to even get near it, but the owner drives it quite frequently, in the rain even.

Very cool! There is one like this (in poor condition) driving around the neighborhood our house is in, in Morelia, Mexico. I was always astounded when I saw it on the poorly paved potholed streets.

I'd gladly take a poor condition one & take the time to get it back into shape. It's only time/money...

The Red/Tan I got to ride in, is supposedly the last one built. Not sure if that means last ever or last US-spec car.
Owner (along with his dad & brother) bought it in boxes for $250k
Supposedly worth north of $2M now.

That's the same logic that kept me in $500 shitcans for so long.

But sometimes you just need to say "yes" and stretch a little bit.

I should know, I own most of the gray in between.

I think there's a pretty in-depth conversation that can be had here about the value of a museum piece/a prized car vs. something cheap enough to have some level of "disposability".

Yep, especially because it's not a replaceable loss. That said, most of these cars never leave the property they are stored in so the insurance is quite a lot less than a car that's expensive and driven like a P1, LaF, 918, etc...
