I have a few reasons to not like Teslas; simply disliking Tesla because it's Tesla is not one of them.

I'm glad they are still improving, but a $60k car with the interior of a $40k car still doesn't sound right in my mind.

I actually have a good amount of fun in the R as it is, and it's warmed up within the first 2 miles - I start the car on cold mornings to get some heat inside before bringing my daughter out, and in the summer it has no problem warming up on the drive there. Half of the drive is along curvy backroads too. And again, this is a stopgap car that I'm only keeping for 2-3 years, and I'm financing it 100%.

Civic Si:
Financing: $500/mo = $6000/yr
Gas: 87 gallons/yr = $260/yr
Total out of pocket over 3 years: $18,780

Tesla M3P:
Financing: $800/mo = $9600/yr
Electricity: 765 kwh/yr = $89/yr
Total out of pocket over 3 years: $29,067

This doesn't account for personal property taxes or insurance, but the math just isn't working out in the EVs favor.

Fair enough but you are also comparing to the very most expensive Model 3 by about double the price tag lol. You can get a SR+ model for $40k ish but honestly I'd just get the Mockey or the new Kia/Hyundai over the SR+.

If it's a defined term car with low miles, why not lease it?

Since you ordered your new Si, can we assume the dealer is charging you straight msrp? No additional dealer price gouging?

Can't wait to hear your thoughts.

The dealer threw a curveball at me late last night (they tacked on $7k worth of options that I never agreed to, nor do I want), so we're still trying to iron that out.

Some of the accessories that they tossed on it was nitrogen filled tires ($199), wheel locks ($400), LoJack ($1500) and tint ($700). Their reasoning: they need to make sure their parts and service dept survives the chip shortage. I was pretty confident the deal would get done yesterday afternoon but then they pulled this shit...

The alleged survival of their parts and service departments is not your problem. That was a stupid thing for them to say and an even more stupid thing to do.

I've had occasion to see the financial results of a couple of car dealerships in the past year and despite the pandemic and the logistical issues and shortages, these places are doing just fine financially. That was a greedy move made in hopes that you were too naive to know better.

And the reason I did not sign anything last night.

I tossed them a bone and said I'd tack on the lip kit (I was going to order it anyway after the purchase), just so service and parts do get a cut, but I don't want any of the other crap. I'm waiting to see what they will say, but I've been talking to other dealers as well.

Yeah, all of those seem grossly overpriced.
Especially the air in the tires
Can't imagine wheel locks are $400
Haven't done tint in years, so not really sure what that runs. Need to get the Malibu done before summer.

Yes...$200 to fill your tires with the most abundant gas in our air. Good grief.

Game players. You have more patience than I do. I'd have just told them if they want the sale, and me as a customer, along with my service and parts business, they'll provide me with the car as spec'd by me, and agreed upon, verbally, by both of us. Otherwise There are tons of Honda dealers out there.

That's pretty much what my last email to the GM says.

This is a want, not a need. The Golf R is still fine, just expensive to keep. But I don't need to get rid of it.

I'll fill your tires up with 78% nitrogen for $100. It's 50% cheaper but only 20% less nitrogen.

Are you private party selling the Golf or trading it in?

Trading or selling to Carvana/Carmax/whoever will give me the most money.

I'd run away from that rip off dealer. The best wheel locks I have ever seen don't cost 200, they are smoking crack and want you to pay for it.

Even if I wanted the lip I am sure it can be had for less.

Definitely - list price for the lip kit is $1071. They added it to the sales order at $1822 with install. I haven't been able to find cost on the parts yet but I'm pretty sure they were making a grand on it.

I did the AN thing on their website and they were less than Carvana by a few grand.

Sorry, oddly CV has been 5-10 k less on everything I have tried, guess they don't like Toyotas.

So the Honda sales manager responded yesterday with a link to a 2 yr old Civic Si at CarMax that was listed at $30,998, and went on to say that the chip shortage is really impacting them. What he failed to realize is this - I don't care. I simply responded "Understood. Thank you for you time." A few hours later I got an email from the salesperson I was working with that said "We'd love to work with the accessories cost. Unfortunately we can't remove them all." Then asked me to let them how we can move forward to secure the car for me.

I haven't responded yet, mainly because I went into full on analysis mode.

I put together a spreadsheet yesterday comparing the cost of ownership for various vehicles. This accounted for TTL, fuel/electricity consumption (based on $3.75/gal for 93 octane & $.13/kWhr), loan information, personal property taxes, maintenance, yearly registration, and projected resale value (most of the stuff I didn't include in the message at the top of the page). Then I put in the info for the Civic Si as well as the new Golf R and the Model 3, for shits and grins. Again, factoring in projecting resale, the Si would have a total cost of ownership of $19,282 ($535/mo) over 3 years. The Golf R is $23,471 ($651/mo). The Tesla is $16,584 ($460/mo). The starting point for these comparisons is MSRP, which is difficult to find since most dealers are really pumping up the market adjustments.

So, yeah....

Their reasoning: they need to make sure their parts and service dept survives the chip shortage. I was pretty confident the deal would get done yesterday afternoon but then they pulled this shit...
LOL.

Dealers and lying through their teeth...what else is new. Data, which is actually public, shows that car dealers made HUGE profits last year because of the pandemic. I bet their parts and service dept is making bank too since more people are now keeping cars longer and so I bet more people would rather fix their car then getting new ones. But of course what can we expect from car dealers. Those accessory prices are wack.

I've had occasion to see the financial results of a couple of car dealerships in the past year and despite the pandemic and the logistical issues and shortages, these places are doing just fine financially. That was a greedy move made in hopes that you were too naive to know better.
Any dealer who says they are having hard time making ends meet....should be shown articles that are all over the internet like this: https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news...its/ar-AAQAmNQ

A few hours later I got an email from the salesperson I was working with that said "We'd love to work with the accessories cost.

Spoiler

I was gonna say you should send back an email with just the letters "LOL"

But having seen what you did....I would just respond to that salesperson email with a photo of your confirmed Tesla reservation.

Be sure to rub the Honda dealer's nose in it real good.

Good luck with the muskmobile.

at least you won't need a separate capacitor to fuel the 3 phoenix gold amps pushing the 4 15's in the back.
probably the real reason you went EV.

You can certainly modify it if you want, there are loads of options for suspension, brakes, wheels, tires, interior, exterior, tintz, cosmetics, etc. Only thing you can't do is tune it but it's faster than anything you've had so far so try that out first, goes from zero to jail pretty fast.

I don't plan on keeping mine any longer than it takes for the Rivian to get here so I'm not going to do much in terms of mods to mine.

So no more manuals then? Just going to hold out until that possible project car?

Yeah I've already priced out suspension upgrades. I'm not doing anything crazy though - I want to be able to go back to stock easily.

Most modern manuals on the market these days suck. I had to put about $400 worth of parts and a few hours of my time into making the manual in the Golf feel good, and that didn't including the clutch itself. Whatever project car we get will be a manual though. Either a kit car or something from the 90s that we can beat the shit out of and just have fun with.
