Love the shift knob! Do they make ones for other brands too or just for Porsche?

Spontaneous Glass Spidering

Spontaneous window glass spidering anyone?? WTF I walked out past car 10 mins prior and window was not like this. Ran uptown quickly and saw this the second I got home. There's no point of impact marks either. The glass in this car is Porsche's lightweight glass, obviously a problem. The car has been parked since yesterday afternoon. Sent messages to SA and Service Department, I'll keep you posted. I had heard this was a thing about the lightweight noise-insulating glass, just expected it would happen if hit by a rock not sitting in my driveway.

That sucks Chief. I hope the rest of the glass in the car stays sound.

Yeah me too obviously. Wonder what kind of P car I'll get for a loaner? I was supposed to get some more track time tomorrow at the Glen, that's not happening now.

^^ yes and no. The glass from what I've heard, it something that takes a long time to get from Porsche. Fingers crossed it doesn't happen to me.

I spoke with the Service Dept at Porsche Buffalo this morning. They have just received a TSB from Porsche advising of the lightweight glass breaking or being defective. Glass is ordered, just waiting for the call to install it next. I'll keep you posted. I don't know if I'll get a loaner or not but in the meantime to prevent further damage, they suggested I cover in/outside of window with tape. I said that I had Track Tape which is like a disposable PPF to put on your car for track sessions and they said yes, that's even better. Looks AF I'll probably re-do it on second thought . . . won't be driving it until I take it to the dealer's about 22 miles away anyways.

Porsche Technical Service Bulletin from what I read, didn't mention my kind of failure, however, you can tell by looking at it, there was no outside force applied to it to make it spider like it did.

That’s a bummer about that window!
lol at the tape though, I’ve seen tint jobs that don’t look too far from that!

Suddenly I feel less bad that my 911T allocation is nowhere close to coming up.

But that stinks; hope they get the window sorted out quickly.

are all 911 backordered or just the carreraT?

also, Chief, is the lightweight glass on all 911 or just on the T?

All Porsches are back-ordered some more so than others. Technically I got my T allocation 2 months after placing the order so I was lucky but I had been #1 on the list for a Carrera S for 15 months before switching over to the T list and maintaining my #1 status. The LWG is standard equipment on the T, you can't order different glass currently. The glass, 7MT, no rear seats and lightweight battery equal a 100# weight loss for the car making it the lightest in the Carrera range and only slightly heavier than a GT3.

thanks for the info, wow, that’s a long time on the list, did you start off waiting on a 991.2 and then rolled into a 992? (Sorry, I don’t know how long ago you took delivery).
I didn’t realize you could delete the rear seats in a Carrera T, that’s pretty pretty cool! Although that’s the 1 option I wish mine had…

Anyways, its great they offer all this lightweight stuff without having to go all out on GT models!

I hope your glass gets sorted quickly.
do you think it was related to possibly the window not lowering a bit when opening the door, or it was all the way up when closing?

Originally ordered a 992.1 Carrera S, got a 992 T 4/27/23. The rear seats are deleted standard though you can add them in for $0 which I did since I was spending nearly $7K on the Lizard Green interior, I wanted ALL of it. Besides, if I need to go faster, I'd rather lose the 15# on my body than in my car and be compromised.

HA HA! That’s too funny about the weight! Also, the interior spec you have is spectacular.
yeah my thought was that with my driving skill, 15lbs will have zero effect on lap time and performance. If I ever get to a point where 15lbs on a 3300lbs car affects my lap times consistently, my ego and pride will be off the scale.

If you're at that point where 15lbs makes a measurable difference, you should be in a spec race car and not a road car.

Not a spec car but a IMSA/Indy/F1 car if your ass is that sensitive to weight.

Other than the looks, you’re clear to drive it right? Can you put the window up and down? I’m assuming it won’t clear a DE inspection, right?

when is the track day you had planned?

I haven't tried putting the window down yet. It probably would pass DE inspection since windows are down for all DE's. The one I was going to was last Monday, the day after the glass spidered.

Right, yeah you do keep the window down, so if something happens it’s in the door, I just didn’t know if it counted as possible distraction or something…

shame you missed your event, it’s too hot here in Florida now, but some came up in October and November so I’ll be checking my schedule. Do you have track insurance? I’ve been using Lockton.

Have a good rest of your weekend Chief!

Is there a layer of another material between the inner and outer glass surfaces? I wonder why Porsche would even bother in a street-only car. The standard glass in my 2015 911 GTS is not a problem.

On another point. Since I spent many years running a microwave standards lab taking measurments, when I see a number, I question it. Since you have been on the track, what kind of Gs are you pulling in the corners using the built-in G meter on stock tires. I've always driven grocery-getters and not used to seeing 1.34G (right) and 1.21G (left) on stock Pirelli P Zeros. Can that be right and on stock performance street tires? Pulling 3+G on an aircraft when the odd student effs-up in a panic coming out of a spin, I can understand, but 1.3G on street tires.

Oh I’m really curious how you like it. I have 2 of the first gen ones, but they constantly trip because of blind spot sensors. Anyways, one of the 2 died because the power wire became brittle over time, cracked and the wires shorted. I was looking around and Uniden and EscortMax keep coming up in reviews but those are a decent chunk of change.

After 27 years of doing so, 2023 was my last year touring Europe and the Alps on my motorcycle. Next year, a rental or the train/bus (no bumper-to-bumper traffic to worry about and I can drink a beer), but I will rent a Turbo S for a day. As boring as the Autobahn is, I want to see 300 kph once in my life. I have to find a stretch light on traffic; not always easy.

I didn't even think to run the G meter or SportChrono so truthfully, I can't tell you. Those numbers however, seem a little high to me for no readily apparent reason, ie-no factual support.
