^nice pic of the R8..... but again it has no effectiveness. Hell, even if it isn't a response (actually, I doubt its even intended to be a response to checkmate) its only an average billboard.

Your lux "badge" expired?
What is that supposed to mean?
As if they have expiration dates for car mfg?
As if BMW no longer makes luxury cars?
Audi: Learn to know when you lost a marketing battle.
...just because you lost a battle does not mean you lost the war.
Now it looks like they are sore losers.
Audi took a witty ad, and now drove the whole campaign into the ground.
I hope that ad is not for real.

"Time to check your luxury badge. It may have expired."
Do you get it? The R8 has pushed the bar up in the lux category and BMW can't match it.
Furthermore, BMW has been living off the entry level 3 series and the A4 is a serious threat to that cash cow. The M3 is not an answer to the A4... BMW didn't "get it" with the original Audi ad.

^^ya, but if you gotta explain it, the message is lost.
As we've all said, this isn't about the cars, its about the advertising. In that regard, BMW advertising got Audi advertising and got them good.

Let me point out the relevant word in Audi's ad grasshopper:
"Time to check your luxury badge. It may have expired."

yeah......... right. It doesn't even matter who taunted who with regards to Audi vs. BMW, but it was Audi who taunted the bull first and got the horns. Really, how can you respond to that? Pull the bull horn out of your ass and then say "haha, think again"? No.... you walk away, lesson learned, put some salve on your anus and kick the marketing dept. in the head. Checkmate is just that.... end game, rematch next time.
What else was BMW supposed to do? Not respond at all? Wait until the next 3-series is out, then put up a billboard? Or worse, reply with the 325i instead but still say Checkmate? That would have been weak. So much ass backwards logic, not by you but by others. "Yeah but the M3 isn't supposed to be compared to the A4" - as if the M3 is the rival to the R8?
#182
There is no bad publicity right? I'm sure Audi expected BMW to respond, even if their message backfired, this ad thing is buzzin' all over the place. Audi's new ad isn't aiming at the M3 (its not even there anymore), it works fine standalone.

I gotta explain it to the fine young gentlemen here, but not necessarily to the A4 buying demographic
One game doesn't mean much in chess, for one thing, white has the advantage over black. Ya need 5 or more games in a real match... but Audi pulls out the R8 and its match over.
In this case, BMW should have seen where this was going and just wimpered away...

Are you guys really having a 5 page long debate over this?
BMW marketing > Audi marketing (especially if that last banner was for real)
However, is BMW's advertising dept even in charge for local dealership billboard ads? It says Santa Monica BMW

They singlehandedly stomped on that specific ad campaign by Audi with just a single word and a picture. That's really all there is to it. None of this "oh noes, its just one game, Audi will win teh next one with teh R8!" stuff
And analogically comparing chess with the actual practice of advertising really makes sense..... yeah

There should be a lot of red faces over at Audi right now.

Who gives a shit about chess? It started as chess and has long since morphed into something more than it.
You want to keep in the chess theme, by all means knock yourself out.
I thought the paraphrased quote from "The Untouchables" was apropos.

There's too much praise here of BMW's cute response but its not as clever as one might think.
In business, you are at war with your competitors and chess is a war game. And one of the greatest minds in human history was Sun Tzu and his "The Art of War" is a must read. Here, are some of many passages that apply:
Whoever is first in the field and awaits the coming of the enemy, will be fresh for the fight; whoever is second in the field and has to hasten to battle will arrive exhausted
Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting
Like I mentioned before, the A4 vs. 3 was just an initial skirmish prepared to draw BMW into the aim of the big guns: the R8, for which BMW has no response.

Apparently, marketing is too hard for some idiots in here to comprehend. Seriously.
Just stop.
Just stop.

analogically? That's waaay too big of a word to use here.

You are way too fucking serious.
Are you the VP of Marketing who came up with this billboard ads? How can you be so sure with all of this??
You are trying too hard, IMHO.
