Its great marketing and some good local dealer competition on the side.
A lot of you need to get over it.

Someday, an RS6 Avant+
I must admit, BMW did a great job usurping Audi.
Now, Audi must respond with the RS4. That will be a funny ad.
And I like the Subaru ad, along with Bentley. But then again, the Bentley ad is kind of like a little league kid versus Josh Beckett. Not the same league.

IMO, BMW won this one as well (esp. since if i'm not mistaken they weren't even competing in prototype then)....but Bentley's response was my favorite (subaru was great too). 99% of the world could careless about racing pedigree....esp. prototype. Moog is dead right, you don't get it

Well, I agree Audi got punched in their marketing faces with that one. Looks like they were trying to continue from that commercial where they claimed the new A4 is
"The fastest, biggest, most fuel-efficient car in its class."
And then when you read the fine print they had pit the car up against all the competitions lower model C class, 328i, and IS250.

BMW could have used a 328/335 and had been just as effective, the key to the ad was that Audi thought they were clever by asking for a response to the A4. BMW said, "fine, here is our response"

....and stupid move by Audi marketing, practically begging for a reply.

I don't think Audi is an underdog anymore. BMW has slaved the auto journalists with the 3-Series for years. Audi has achieved the same effect with the R8. Not that the auto journalists determine the success of either.
BMW seems to be the marketing king, but Audi and BMW tied in the prior marketing fight. (World Car of the Year, etc.)
Audi was asking for it again, but this time got slapped in the face. Its not because BMW put a M3 on their board, its because of lack of a better response. What is Audi going to say to Checkmate? "Um, I'm sorry, we were playing checkers. Sorry, BMW. Sincerely, Audi." ?
There was another clever BMW ad like the ones above that featured the 5-Series and Jaguar S-Type. (I think it was S-Type) It featured the 545i and S-Type parked nose to nose. The "Leaping Cat" on the Jaguar was turned around, and it was leaping away from the BMW. Pretty clever, not to mention funny. Why would BMW even consider the S-Type real competiton?

LOL at Subaru. It's not like they consider themselves real competition for BMW/Audi, its more like a "You guys are such douche bags. Quit wasting your time."
Subaru also has the best picture of their car, compared to BMW/Audi.

Three Wheelin'
If Audi were to respond with the R8, I'd agree that they would win this marketing battle. However, I still see dozens of 7 Series on the road to every 1 A8 I come across. If we're talking sales, I think BMW wins this one where it counts.

Don't be fooled, I wasn't trying to knock Audi down, in fact I've owned an A3 and an A8 in the past few years. Like a few other members have mentioned, this thread wasn't targeting the cars(A4 vs M3), it's the clever response from the other party that is quite humourous. I also think the people on this forum are very positive when it comes to Audi; you'll notice we do nothing but praise Audi's car designs and their technology pretty much everywhere on Acurazine.

When a pawn reaches the opposite side of the board, it promotes. This means that the owner of the pawn can choose a queen, a rook, a knight, or a bishop (of his own color), and put that piece instead of the pawn on the board; on the square of the pawn.

I think Audi didn't know it was playing chess. They fell into that hole with a clever ad from BMW. Maybe BMW was supposed to respond with a 328i and say "check", then Audi go BAM! "CHECKMATE" with an R8.
