Best radar detector?

I'm moving to a province where they are legal, so I'm looking to get the best possible one.

Is Valentine 1 still the best one out there?

Think the best radar is learning your route, paying attention, watching traffic for brake lights, keeping an eye on the rear view etc. I drive down a heavy patrolled road everyday and those above have keep me free and clear. The other day was a close call that a radar would have missed imo from experience with them. Passed a point where a tropper normally hides under an overpass, no one there, so I speed up to pass slower traffic- 65 in a 50mph. Checked my rearview just as usual to see if anything is up like someone riding my ass etc.- see a trooper flying up on my ass, pulled my e-brake to bring it down to 55 and moved into the slow lane. Followed me for a bit but eventually he had to turn around.

If the majority of your driving is random areas, then go for it. I've had luck with bel rx detectors starting which are decently priced at cardomain.com that never really missed a beat.

Think the best means the most sensitive to false alarms, anything that picks up everything is unlikely to miss a radar check. Only prob is everything that isn't a radar check.

The only radar I ever hear about thesedays is V1. Is there any real competition for it?
How much does one run in terms of price?

Radar detectors=waste of money IMO.
heitsme has great points and is how i've steered clear of tickets for years.

Also, ask any cop. If and when you get pulled over, your chances of getting off easy is non exsistent as soon as they see any evidence of a radar detector in your car. Whether it is legal or not in your state/province. They might be walking up to your car just to give you a verbal warning about "Slowing it down" for all you know, but their mind will quickly change as soon as they see you have a detector.

Just food for thought.

First post in that thread... Radar detectors are legal in Michigan. I don't know what the guy was talking about.

Anyway, yeah, when you're the only one on the road, it's basically useless. Everyone knows that. But when there's traffic ahead of you, and a cop is clocking them, the detector can pick up the stray signal to warn in advance.

This is why I love my V1. I've had a warning as far as 2.9 miles out (it's pretty flat around here ). And I still keep a watchful eye on the road for cops. Since I've gotten the V1, I've only had one speeding ticket and it was because I was being stupid.

My detector is mounted at the top of the windshield next to the mirror. Even I can't see it from the back, front or standing next to the car. Unless you're staring directly at it from inside the car, it's hard to see. And I have the remote display on top of the steering column which can be taken off in about 3 seconds flat.

I had an Escort...got nailed speeding and the officer gave me a 2nd ticket for having my "view obstructed" by the detector. Needless to say, I don't use one anymore and now my mom's view is obstructed..

If you don't feel like dumping all that cash to have the K40 installed, the V1 is the next best thing. Just make sure to get it hardwired if you go with the V1.

I've had no speeding tickets without a detector. Everyone has to love the selling point of having no tickets with the V1 for $400- its undeniable . Well how bout the selling point of no tickets while speeding without spending any money?

I wouldn't be too secure about mounting things by the rearview, #1 legality, #2 theft.

V1 is hands down the best "affordable" radar solution.

I've actually driven with both the X50 and V1 side my side in my car up from Chicago to Cincinnati, I can say that though their signal pickup is about the same the arrows on the V1 make it such a awesome tool.

However I don't think getting one is the smartest idea. I'm 22 so I've been driving for a little under 6 years now.I've never gotten a speeding ticket (mostly because I just go 7 over), I got my radar this past winter and since then I go around 15-20 over, sometimes on my long boring drives I go up to 110 on 57 on my way up to Chicago... one time I was late for an interview and did around 125 most of the way (110 in the city) I'll never do that again... but hey the interview landed me the job so it's all good .

The V1 always nails cops, but with instant on these days it could still be risky... I just keep it now for a peace of mind when I drive.

V1 hands down... I own one and its saved me $1000's... But even though I own one I dont speed at rediculous speeds maybe 15-20 over... Cause its a 100% going to work... Cause you still have instant radar and laser...

Not if the traffic is going the speed limit and they don't have a detector. They won't see the hidden cruiser until the last minute and even if they did, they wouldn't brake if they were going the speed limit. But the fact is that the cops will be shooting the radar.

Maybe you don't speed enough; maybe your area doesn't have a high concentration of traffic police, etc, etc. When I had my Intrepid a few years ago, I still sped quite a bit. But a lot of times, cops let me go or went for someone else, because I had a State sticker on the back window... translation, a college student in a beat-up car.... or two suits in a brand new LS430? That's a true story, by the way.

My point is, there are a lot of reasons to not get a ticket.

It's legal. Michigan law states that you cannot have anything hanging from the windshield down. My V1 is hardwired, and the wire runs above the headliner. It's perfectly legal, and as for the issue of theft, you can't steal what you can't see. Even I have a hard time seeing it when I'm walking towards the car sometimes. If somebody ever broke into my car (knock on wood) it would be for some other reason.

Bottom line is do whatever you want. If you get by without a detector, then cool. But in my area, where cops love shooting the radar, it's a necessity.

By the way, that was me posting on my brother's computer using his account, ndx2.

Escort 8500. Turn off X band and its gold.

I keep mine tucked under a spot in my dash. Its still very effective for traps, unnoticeable and it was cheap.

But yeah. Paying attention and not driving like a tool helps.
