Back in Honda world
I was considering many alternatives for the drive of our teenagers; final contenders were Corolla CE 2012 (-2000$ rebate) and Civic 2012 DX.
The Honda will be in our driveway in a few days. It is a "stripper version" with zero option (although it has a radio, unlike in the USA).
THE factor I went new is because standard ESP / 6 airbags is standard. Security is an important consideration (again the car is for our children). I am a strong believer in these technologies and decided to put my money where my mouth is.
While the Toyota is offendingly bland and dull, at least the Civic is a bit more fun to drive. Oh! I just don't like Toyota cars....

I think what he meant to say was "Congratulations on your new car, I hope your kids enjoy it."
That being said, why did you opt for a new stripper instead of a used vehicle with some options?

The only pole it comes with is the manual shifter.

Since you are so nice, I will repeat a tiny part of my original post; "THE factor I went new is because standard ESP / 6 airbags is standard. Security is an important consideration (again the car is for our children). I am a strong believer in these technologies and decided to put my money where my mouth is."

I am not interested in paying 1000-1200$ for A/C at all. I had plenty of cars without it and in Canada, it is not as much as a concern as in the Southern US. We will survive.

I don't know about Montreal, but here in Vancouver I can get away with no AC, I think I've used mine once in the past year, and believe it or not, I actually had to look twice for the AC button, I hadn't used it for so long

I dunno.
You buy your daughter a brand new car and its the base version? I'm sure she will appreciate it, but no a/c? adding the option would've only added 20 dollars or so to your monthly payment.
Not very efficient of you.
There's nothing wrong with a used car. Did you look into something certified preowned? They offer a great warranty and don't have instant depreciation that a new car has

lol, some of you act like no AC is the end of the world. No AC in cars is actually very common in other parts of the world. Have you guys ever wonder why a lot of million dollar beach homes don't have AC? It's because you don't need it having the ocean breeze. It's the same thing with cars in certain parts of the world with cooler climates.

Congrats, I guess?
For me, no A/C is a deal breaker.
None of this would mean anything for a new driver?
intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) with Color TFT Screen
USB Audio Interface[6]
Air Conditioning with Air-Filtration System
Illuminated Steering Wheel-Mounted Cruise, Audio and i-MID Controls
160-Watt AM/FM/CD Audio System with 4 Speakers
MP3/Windows Media® Audio (WMA) Playback Capability[7]
MP3/Auxiliary Input Jack

in a 30 year old used car, i couldn't care. but in a brand new car sold in the U.S./Cananda, yes. i would never buy a new car without the basics like a/c. and power windows and locks unless it's something exotic.

you're in the NorCal, he's in Montreal there's a HUGE difference in climate. Maybe he HE lived in NorCal, he would have gotten AC, he's already mentioned several times that it ain't the first car he's bought w/o AC and he has NO problems not having AC... North America is very big, there are different climates.

See, what I don't get is the OP made a purchase with safety in mind. Having Air Conditioning is a safety feature. There's a reason why the modern automatic climate control systems automatically turn on the a/c compressor when you select "auto". It does more than blow cold air. It FILTERS the air. Less worry about stale air entering the car (have allergies? it's gotta be tough to drive while sneezing your ass off), and more importantly, the ability to keep the windows clear on a rainy or snowy day. Try turning on the front defogger in the newer cars and see if you can turn off the a/c. You can't.
It's been cool enough here lately that I just use the ventilation and manually turn off the a/c button. Last week it was pouring all day (we got like 3" of rain that day). I was driving home and had my ventilation selected to up and down, so it vents the windshield and my feet. Windows started to fog (this is fresh air coming in, not in recirculate mode, another no-no to leave it in if you want the windows fog free). The windows still started to fog, but not as bad as if it were in recirculate mode. I turned on the a/c compressor and within a minute, my windows were fog free all around.
I guess the OP doesn't think being able to see out of the glass having windows free of fog is enough of a safety feature. And I don't want to hear the "we have more than one car" nonsense. There's a reason why I opted to put a more rain resistant tire on my Lotus even though I don't plan on driving it in the rain. You never know.

you don't really need AC up here. It's winter for 7 months, then the little sun you do get, it doesn't get as hot as you'd think. I don't have AC in my 2G. It did come with it, it blew up, never fixed it, and I live with it. Crank the window open and you got your AC. I also always get headaches from AC so I never used it in my 3G either

There was never an issue clearing the windows, or with allergens, etc. When I lived on the west coast, my apartment did not have a/c either. You learn how to manage the air-flow in the car to keep the windows cleared.

My first car didn't have a/c or power steering, if you can believe it. I lived in upstate NY. I could live without the a/c, however, the lack of power steering was killing me. I had the car for 3 years, and then sold it to my neighboor who didn't want a/c or p/s either.
