Another WRX, another tree, another bunch of funerals

Man I just hate these stories. So why am I posting it? Because of the futile hope that it will somehow save someone from throwing their own car off the road.

Remember folks:

$$$ spent on driving school > $$$ spent on mods

I'm all for graduated licenses to boot. Under 21 - only family members allowed in car.

Perhaps a local club could look into setting up a couple of closed road events a year, in cooperation with the local PD. Barriers in front of trees, etc. Sanction it, and you might save the life of someone stupid.

coming from a Wrx i know how it feels to keep wanting more power and pushing the car to its limits, but i did it in a controlled environment. It seems that more Wrx owners are becoming more reckless.

As a former WRX owner myself, I can attest to the capability of those cars....especially in modified form. Nevertheless they are not immune to the laws of physics, and can be thrown off the road like any other vehicle. Unfortunately, that fact seems to be lost by drivers time and time again. AWD does not equal invincibility.

WRX are becoming less expensive and and an alternative to the Honda's these kids would normally be driving. Sad.

Just remembered that one of my close high school friends fell off the cliff (angel's crest hill) couple years ago while doing these foothill runs... oh yeah, he was in the backseat too and the driver survived..

Lesson: STFU and wear seatbelt.

Lesson #2:

If you're riding in a car with someone driving like an asshat, the magic words are: "I'm gonna throw up".

they're getting older which means they are cheaper making it easier for younger kids to get a hold of the powerful WRX and sti versions of the impreza. When i was going to highschool, kids were driving hondas or toyotas, nothing anywhere near 200 hp and they were fwd. Today, kids are running around in 250-300+ hp cars with the same level of experience, the parents are at fault

My 1st was a 73 Pontiac with a 350 ci engine. It was far more powerful than I needed or had experience for and it only last 13 days before I rolled it over. Fortunately for me no one was hurt so the cost of me learning my lesson wasn't paid in human lives.

Licensing should be better, better graduated licensing, and cars should be graduated as well, start out lower hp and work your way from there until graduated licensing is done.

why in the world would parents even consider a high performance car for a teenager? The parents should be given the same punishment as the driver in this case since they directly enabled their kid to cause this disaster in driving.

Wow someone put this story on here? Its been major news on tv since im from sacramento too.

they showed pictures of the students, students signing a large banner at the school and the tree where it happened. The tree was reletively unfazed, the impact was so hard, that the turbo of the engine still sits at the base of the tree today.

I feel so sorry for the driver. If any good can come out of this, he learned a tragic lesson about the dangers of speed. But truthfully, nobody deserves to be taught that lesson that way.

Around here a couple years ago some kid got an M3 for his 16th birthday. A few weeks later he wrapped it around a tree. Thankfully nobody was killed but his parents then went out and bought him an M5. I still can't believe they did that.

Are those parents wanting to adopt a 40 year old who want's an M5?

Kidding aside, It is true that parents should have some responsibility when it comes to what kind of car their child has and what kind of driver training the kid gets, but the parents bore no responsibility for the kid being an asshat out of their purview. A kid will do this / try this regardless.

They probly assume bigger car = safer car, but using that logic they shoulda bought him a Town Car

Most of these accidents occur from the lack of instruction from the parents on proper driving techniques and limits of these vehicles.

I'm with most of the posters here: parents need to be blamed partially for this tragic accident ... my educated guess is that some parents don't even know what's the HP on these WRX/Sti ... sigh ... my kids are going to get my hand-me-down 15-yr-old TL for sure ... lol

while part of me does think that it's partially the parent's fault for buying such a high powered vehicle, i dont think it's their fault. most of the blame goes to the kid because it's what he chose to do with the car that put him in that predicament. he could have done that in a toyota prius if he wanted to go that fast lol. its very sad that things like this happen and im sure he will be very depressed about it and it probably happened because he got caught up in the moments of speed and exhileration (and ken block videos), but every car enthusiast from time to time speeds excessively (and dont act like you dont). my condolences go out to his family and all the families affected .
