$45K for a used (potentially new) performance sedan...what would you look at?
#41
Do people really struggle to make it 100k on a car? I figured by now all makes will do 200k easily. I treated my '96 Legacy like a red-headed step child and she went 235k before I was rear-ended.
The best thing you can do to avoid paying more than you have to is stay far away from stealerships. They will tell you whatever it takes to make a sale, whereas private party sales have actual knowledge of the car they are selling.
Beyond that, I would stick with Japanese or Korean. Also, I would just get 2 cars. A Toyota Camry for family driving, and something you have always wanted for everything else.

If i were to get a bmw or mercedes for myself i would lease a brand new one for a few years and turn it back in before the warranty is up. You want to put a ton of miles on a car and want to make sure its holds its value then almost always your best bet is a japanese vehicle.
Just look at trade in values of really old jaguars and land rovers. They are expensive when new but no one wants to touch an old one with a lot of miles simply because of the high cost of repairs and reconditioning.

for $35k you can prob pick up a new 2G IS but it still lacks room...

Safety Car
the back of the IS3 is small... like corolla size... and the 2JZ-GE engine is slow... you would have to NA-T that sucker or do a GTE swap before getting anywhere with that thing... IS3 were slower than the 2G TL....

the inside has grown slightly, but not too far off from the corolla. the interior is much smaller than the exterior insinuates. prob about the same size as a new civic. no way you are getting 3 in the rear.
EDIT: wow, i did a comparo....
The new 4 dr civic has an interior volume of 88.4, and the new IS 88.3. i said, well, its probably because of the wasteland of space above the dash in the civic...but low and behold, the civic has 4 more inches of rear leg room than the IS. wow! 34.6 vs 30.6

35k will get you a 250 AWD w/ no options. or a slightly used 350 with the bells and whistles.

Audi RS4 <----(what I'm considering currently for a play toy)
CTS-V <----(2nd Gen only)
Mazdaspeed 6 <----(one of the best, all around vehicles I've ever driven)
New TL <----(Loyalty perks at dealer)
BMW 335D <---(Diesel, and you will never go back)

Drifting
I was looking around through bimmerzine and the torque on those 335d's is intoxicating. I would also suggest one of those. Still they all said the 335i was still a better drive. What about a 335is?
EDIT-Apparently the 335is never came in sedan form, scratch that.

10 year old Is300? RS4? 335d?
He wants a reliable sedan with room for 3 kids in the back. If you look at the cars he already listed then its obvious hes looking for something bigger.

If you are sticking with Acura and need a car with decent power, I'd go with a new TL or a 2006-8 RL (not 2005). We have folken in the RL forum who are at over 200k on their 2G RLs and other than some niggling problems, they hold up. Put some sticky rubber on and with SH-AWD, the car sticks like glue. The TL gets better mileage.
G8 GXP is a good choice, too, but prices are indeed crazy on those now.
In any case, I'm in for pics at this point in the thread.

With 3 kids, think about a SUV. These kids will become children and you'll always need more space. Has been there.
New Jeep GC, Durango or used MDX. If fuel economy is a concern, the AWD 276HP Santa Fe does a great job at 20/26mpg or its Kia counterpart, the Sorento, more modern. If fun-to-drive is still king, I'd opt for the MDX in this crowd.
BTW, if the ZF 8-sp. make it to the Chrysler SUVs, mileage should be improved by an interesting 10%.

I traded in my 07 TL-S w/ 79K miles for my now 07 M45S w/ 28K miles mainly because I wanted something roomier and more comfortable. My personal review on it in comparison to my TL:
PROS:
Roomier, more amenities (climate controlled seats), adaptive front lighting, active rear suspension, and best of all the maintenance is cheaper because their engines are timing chain driven so the 100K service is more reasonable in price. The M35 uses regular gasoline. THE POWER and TORQUE (in my M45)!!!
CONS:
The M45 uses premium and the fuel economy isn't all that great. On a 300 mile trip with with the cruise set on 65-70mph I got a hair over 22mpg according to the car. You cannot input addresses in the navigation while in drive. You must be in park, not moving to input addresses. There is not an AUX in on the 06-07, but in 08 they received an AUX in. I plan on purchasing an Isimple for it.
Other than that, I love it! Below are the pics from the dealership the day I got her.
Windows and windshield freshly tinted.....

Test drove the 2011 V8 Genesis and wow
Gobs of power, lots of creature comforts, tons of room, great styling. Wife and kids loved it.
Priced out a titanium gray metallic with black interior. The V8 comes with everything included. Ended up about $1500 under the best deal I could manage on a 2012 SHAWD TL.
Worked out a good deal on a 2011 then I came home and read about the changes to the 2012.
8-speed tranny
Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)
Folding side mirrors
I love that the V8 can take regular gas (slight performance decrease).
So I'm going back to the dealer Monday to see what he can do on a 2012.
Looks like Hyundai is going to gain another customer soon.
Thanks all for the help, especially you Kris.

If you are going to wait a couple months to get the Genesis do me a favor and just drive and look at a Charger RT.
I am in no way trying to get you change your opinion, just would love hear what you think. Especially since its a car I am sure you wouldn't normally consider.
