wait, did I say I was gonna quit altogether? I mis-spoke.. I just quit the weekly gig, I will still be dropping in on occasion to survey and shoot the scenery, as needed..

Sucks for us that you quit the weekly gig, but I can only imagine how much more time and energy you'll have for yourself and other hobbies. Congrats on the new freedom. I know your day job will notice your added energy, too.

thx - yeah I feel like this immense weight has been lifted from me... the thing is, even when I wasn't doing the photo stuff, it was STILL on my mind because basically, anything else I did, I *felt like* I was only procrastinating from the photos. It's a terrible feeling!

Congrats on the decision! I think you will be able to focus on what you really want to shoot now, rather than what you had to shoot at the club.

They didn't even ask, I don't even know how they got the pic - most likely from the club. But, I can't say I really care.

Time to start watermarking ALL images you give to the club. They don't have to be completely obvious or obtrusive, but they should be there.

bleh. I had a subtle watermark at the bottom right, it got lopped off. Seriously, it's not a big concern to me, for this kind of pic. I feel more connected to the city shots, credit-wise. But the club stuff, I dunno, I don't feel that connected to em.

Shouldn't you get paid for them to use the photo? Or were you paid by the club for the shot, so the club owns the rights?

I took shots that night for fun, I wasn't paid. Markus Schulz (the DJ) used a few for his sites, and this, and maybe a couple other places. It's just not a big concern to me, for where I want to go.

just noticed they DIDN'T lop off the logo.. it's there, bottom right, just real dim. I wanted it that way so it didn't detract from the pic.

Really like the next to last one. The highlight in the girl's hair and the cups to her left really give the image a sense of depth.

srika, when you shoot people what kind of shutter speeds are you using?

ive been reading the night club thread in POTN and everyone there uses shutter speeds of 1/4th or even slower.

anyways when i do that, its always a hit or miss that the image would be sharp, i think its mostly due to camera shake

maybe my flash settings aren't right

hey - my default at 4.0 is 1/8. I find if I go slower than that, I can still get the subject in focus but outlying details will be blurred - you will notice this in the POTN shots they are talking about. It's an interesting look and I have done it before but haven't in a while, I have liked sharper more defined shots in the past year.

You should set your flash to one of the curtain modes to use that slow shutter, maybe that is what you're missing. Camera shake is not an issue regarding subject focus with these settings, here is why:

1. Click
2. pre-flash (not sure on the technical name)
3. shutter opens, lets ambient light in
4. main flash, subject is frozen, shutter closes.

Any movement that occurred during the ambient light phase would be seen as "ghosty" artifacts - but the final flash should freeze the subject. It takes practice and experimenting, try it out again sometime. Naturally you do have to hold the camera steady, but you don't have to be a surgeon about it.

Hell, makes me wanna try it again.

yeah its pretty crazy.

btw.. this shot, I was a bit and actually swayed the camera in front of them while hitting the shutter.. hence the motion.. but as you can see the subject is still clear. And I was mistaken, my default (custom setting) at 4.0 is 1/6. Got rather lucky with this shot, this is uncropped.

hmm... yea that is what i was always told, but the subject isnt always frozen like people say it should be at least for me that is

and ive been shooting like this for the past year. usually im around f2.8 or f4.0 and around 1/6th and iso 400 to 800. for the flash settings i leave it at the default settings: ETTL, automatic zoom, and whatever the default curtain is.

would it matter that i switched from the sto-fen diffuser to the lumiquest softbox for shoe mount flashes?

ill post some examples when i get around to it.
