shot with a friend's 30D + 24-70 2.8 + Gary Fong lightsphere last night... I need this lens, I been missing out . Thinking about the lightsphere too, but I would get the lens first and see how it does with a regular diffuser. The lightsphere is kinda heavy too, the flash was having some trouble holding it up.
A couple of observations about the 30D, compared to the 5D:
- I loved the 30's rubberized easier-to-move index-finger dial - the 5's is a harsh plastic and not as easy to move. Now, the latter could be a good or bad thing - but for things like HDR where you are not using AEB or a tripod - it's easier to induce camera movement with the harsher clicking dial.
- I felt 24mm was not wide enough for a club setting - I was struggling to get group pics - having to step back so far just to take a pic of 3 people. At 24mm on the 5, I can hold the camera out and take a headshot of me and 4 people if needed - which is great for the clubs. Here's a sample, you can see how much room there is. The difference is much bigger than I had ever thought.
Here are a few samples from last night - looks my style right? The difference is.. aside from resizing and sharpening, there is zero PP on these.. they are on the darker side and I will handle accordingly but I just wanted to show you what they looked like straight out of the cam. In general - they don't need much PP.

that is exactly why im passing up on the 24-70 and getting the 17-55, 24 just wasnt wide enough on a crop sensor.
dont you have the 24-105 f/4? im sure if you really wanted the 24-70 you could easily trade it.

Well the primary cause is the lens, hands-down. The feeling of being at 1/10 or 1/15 and getting shots turning out like that was foreign and felt odd at first - it took a bit of getting used to. Sadly, I could not experiment with the lightsphere compared to my Stofen - the latter was not accessible. So, I don't know what factor the lightsphere played. But, that would not be too hard to discern, after I get the 24-70.

you may notice pics with subjects bunched together or bad cropping of heads etc... that's the product of the 24mm issue I was talking about earlier..

^^Looks great! Sounds like the 24-70 on your 5D is an excellent plan.
