I had this lens, and on a full frame and wide open (or anything wider than f2.2 or so), and depending on your distance to subject, you might be in focus, but the slightest movement by you or the subject, you're now out of focus. Which is true for all fast lenses, but since it's MF... I was frustrated (plus, back then, I was always keeping the ISO at the lowest which means slower shutter speed)

i had posted awhile back ago a link from PetaPixel, from which showed that the 8mm,15mm and 85mm ronkinon where the lenses most needed to be serviced. and it was like months from purchased that those lenses being needed to be serviced. with that being said. That doesn't mean that its every case but still. Now if i remember correctly, they didn't state what problems it had only that it needed to be serviced or even exchanged.

yeah, I believe that was based on lensrental.com or whatever... and I'm pretty sure that's based on rented copies. Sorry, but lenses that get rented and passed around? I've personally owned/own 3 Rokinon lenses and IMO, they are built quite well...

oh and btw... Lensrentals took Rokinon/Samyang off that list, see the top of this link

it annoys me that the list was passed around the internet all over the place... this can kill a company, they make a correction, and no one speaks of it

that's the internet for you

Exactly. I've had the same frustrations. However, when you get it in focus in its sweet spot, damn it produces some fantastic photos.

Interesting info. Fingers crossed I don't have any issues with mine. I don't use it much. I've been strongly considering just selling it and buying the Nikon 85/1.8 just to get AF.

But even then, other Lenses from other companies are passed along too. like i said it may not affect everybody, but the likeliness of it to fail more than other lenses seems to happen.

The Nikon 85mm 1.8G is a great lens for the money.

the error was the they had combined results from Bower and Samyang, yes i read that, but still won't change how i feel about it.

whatever, again... I've owned 3 of Rokinon lenses, never had any issues. The 85mm f1.4 gets great reviews... I only sold mine because I wanted AF.

but go ahead and make judgement based on ONE site

oh, so it's a personal thing.... that makes it a failed lens, right?

this lens got favorable early results at Dxomark.

they are even claiming that it outperforms Canon's 100-400:
At a fraction of the cost, it actually OUTPERFORMS pricier (and not as far-reaching) Canon glass when mounted on full-frame systems.
also missed some discussion on this:

To answer your next question, this is how much it costs to get quality at super-telephoto focal lengths.

Canon 600mm f/4L IS - $12,300
Canon 500mm f/4L IS - $10,400

Nikon is about the same-ish prices and these aren't even zoom lenses. Don't think they even make a 2.8 at that size...
as others said, the reason this lens is OK in the speed department is due to the high ISO capabilities of today's cameras.

I've got an 8mm and 85mm Rokinon and love them...I've actually been thinking of adding the 24mm to the pile. You really need a good focus screen to use the 85 off of a tripod, but like mentioned before...super sharp fantastic affordable lens.

Anyone have the Canon 15-85? I'm looking for a versatile walk around lens to replace my 18-55 kit. Open to suggestions as well.

I have this lens. I use it for 99% of my land/city/sea scapes. I've even used it for some portraits. LOVE it! When I move to FF I don't know what I'll replace it with.

The 15-85 replaced a decent 17-85. In all photo forums they highly recommend it for a versatile all-purpose lens. I`m torn between the 15-85 or 17-55 f2.8. I like the broader range of the 15 but also the 2.8 of the 17-55. Both great lens from everything I`ve read.

I think FF frame you start talking about L lens and those aren`t cheap. The 24-70L for full frame I suppose. Maybe the bank can give you a loan for it.

Not surprising given that the 100-400 came out in 1998 and is due for a replacement soon.

I'd probably break the focal length into 2 lenses the 17-40 and the 24-105. Both are not too bad cost wise especially on the used market.

I'll get a fast zoom or 2 (starting with a 70-200) at some point but they'll probably be Tamron.

Got a Tamron zoom lens can`t beat it for the price. I`m upgrading from my 17-85 soon, I`ll update as soon as I get the replacement.

I pretty much know what to get but these sigma lens keep on popping in to the thought process. I would buy one but the Canon lens have just that much better reviews.

One of my good buddies is a film director at Lockheed and uses that lens quite frequently. Thats actually what he suggested to me, but $$$$ and it doesn't have the range I'm looking for.

24-70L II is a magical lens, it is unfortunately expensive for what it is. If you can afford it and justify it, it's pretty awesome.

The sigma 17-70 has macro and is a F2.8-4. Also a good walk around lens.

Not a true macro, more like 1:2, almost 1:3

I'm not a huge fan of variable aperture lenses. for a little bit more i would get a Sigma 17-50 f2.8. Its very comparable to a 17-55mm.

Thats a nice one too. I wanted a tiny bit more range than my 18-55 and more sharpness. Down the road I'll likely sell the Sigma and Canon for the 15-85...when pttl is ready to sell

The sigma 17-50 has great reviews and half the price of the canon 17-55. Sigmas are pretty decent on the low focal range and tamrons decent on the upper. But that 15-85 keeps calling my name also.

I got it but haven't played with it a whole lot. Its noticeably sharper than my kit 18-55 that it replaced. Also, I've never had a lens that can focus on something that it is physically touching. The focus itself is a little noisy, but I think it will be a great addition.

I've got a 55-250IS. Is the 70-300 a lateral move?
