I was thinking 24mm prices, but I'm will say, it's going to be about $1k. With the turn around they are trying, and see prices increases along with it.
So, it's $899.99

It's a nice lens. Those that I know own it, have never bitched about it. But it you are wanting the 400mm part of it more. I suggest a 400mm 5.6 instead. Comparing the two, years ago, the prime is better.

The Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 was designed to be the ideal all-purpose lens for APS-C sized sensors. With a great focal length and macro capability, the 17-70mm F2.8-4 is also equipped with a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) and an Optical Stabilizer (OS) for superior image quality. The HSM ensures quiet, accurate, and fast autofocusing while the OS compensates for camera shake when shooting by hand. The construction of the 17-70mm includes new TSC material (Thermally Stable Composite), which allows for increased durability as well a reduction in size by 30% compared to conventional models. Two FLD glass elements, which have performance equal to fluorite, are incorporated with one SLD element to reduce color aberration at the highest degree. The 17-70mm F2.8-4 Macro DC HSM OS is compatible with the Sigma USB dock for an increased level of customization. The perfect all-purpose travel lens, the 17-70mm F2.8 Macro DC HSM OS is a must have for any camera bag.

I have the 17-40, I love it. It is super light which is a huge plus for the kind of event work I do where I'm hand-carrying the camera around all night. Very good IQ, and good price to boot.

I've never used the 16-35 but the big differences are weight and the 2.8. Oh and, isn't it like 2x the cost.

First I'll say, get the 17-40, the 16-35 just doesn't do 2x the $$$ for the work. Second, which body?

Interesting. The Tamron rates higher than the Nikon (an EXCELLENT lens) and is several hundreds less expensive.

I might have to consider this.

I guy I know that works at a camera shop praises it... for him tho, the only two downsides are: it takes the bigger 82mm filters (he uses ND filters for various reasons), and the odd focusing ring at the base (well, that's what he said anyway).

Im not in a position purchase at the moment anyway...but I would test it and play with it prior to any actual purchase.

I love the Nikon version...but almost $600 difference in price...I'm willing to be open minded.

it's a good lens, easy to focus (in most occasions, you just turn the focus to infinity), if I recall.. it's pretty sharp when stop down to f5.6 (again... in most landscape situations, I stopped down to f7.1 or f8 anyway). There's a "mustache" distortion that can be more pronounced on some occasions than others. It's usually easily fixed in Lightroom but I remember one that wasn't able to fix... see the photo below, as you can see the log is curved

I sold this lens last year to fund a Zeiss 16-35 f2.8 (which I ended up selling recently to fund something else), I wouldn't mind picking up another copy. Very cheap UWA to buy and (obviously) it's a full frame lens

I've really been contemplating either getting the 17-40 F/4L with the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 that way I could use the 17-40 for landscape and have the samyang as my star photo lens since its a 2.8. orrrr just getting the Canon 16-35 F/2.8 L II. I think I might just drop the cash and get the 16-35. Its on sale now for $1425

When I had my Zeiss 16-35mm f2.8, I found myself stopping down almost always, I had sold my old Konica Minolta 17-35mm f2.8 - 4 to fund the Zeiss, and wish I hadn't. I will probably buy another copy. I also have the Sigma 10-20mm (for my crop body, 15-30mm equivalent) but I don't find my copy very sharp, the corners are terrible

The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens is Very Sharp

  • July 23, 2013

From DXO Mark

The folks at DXOMark have tested the new Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 DC (APS-C) HSM lens and found to be extremely sharp. It turns out that it’s the sharpest APS-C lens that they have ever tested. The performance rivals that of Canon’s 24-70 f/2.8L II lens.

Says DXOMark

“Although it is unlikely a user would buy several full-frame wide-angle lenses specifically for an APS-C format camera, the fact remains that the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM is an outstanding performer optically.

If we want to be picky, the Sigma lacks image stabilization and the zoom range isn’t as wide as some rivals, but at $799 the lens is remarkable….”

Sweet. I remember, i think it was on your FB srika that you said this is a crop lens but can be used on the FF? I wonder if at its widest if it has any danger of hitting the sensor.

70-200s least reliable lens among all manufacturers.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/08...least-reliable

I can believe this, even though I love my 70-200...I've always has focus issues at the worst times...and now the focus barrel is starting to get stuck when it hits minimum focus...and I have to manual twist the barrel until it finally becomes unstuck.

I just haven't had time to get it to Nikon...I know they charge at least $200-250 to crack it open for a service.

I have both version of Nikons 2.8. I owned all four versions of Canons 70-200mm. Never a problem. This comes a from a company that rents equipment to people who just beat the shit out of them. I'd say the 70-200 one of their most popular rentals.

I have used gear from len rentals several times now, as one of the producers I work with likes to use them.

And many of those times, the gear received is in shit condition...even compared to regular rental house standards.

That said...and I agree the 70-200s are popular...I can still agree with their findings since its in comparison with other highly popular rentals (24-70s) etc.

I also think my lens had issues since day one...but I didn't realize it and know what to look for...so now 10 years later, the problem is really pronounced.

On thing I though about sitting in the rain last night at the county fair. People will rent lenses to photograph in the rain. Not caring that though they are weather sealed, they are not weather proof.
