Question for the lens physics Gods...

I have a Canon 40D with a 17-55mm lens attached. When I look through the viewfinder (or live view), objects only appear actual life size when I am zoomed all the way to 55mm. I often leave both eyes open when I am taking pictures, and I noticed this and don't fully understand. Should this be expected? What is the "focal length" of normal vision through the human eye?

its supposed to be about 50mm, which is why people love 50mm on a full frame

what do you guys think about either the 28mm f/2.8 or 24mm f/2.8? I'm thinking about purchasing one of them some time soon ... 24mm has decent reviews on fredmiranda, but I can't easily justify paying an extra $150 for it over the 28 with the same aperture rating ... any thoughts???

What body are you shooting it on? If cropped, I'd go 24mm. Hell either way, I'd go 24mm.

Actually, its about 50mm only on a crop body. On a FF, it's about 35mm. This was what people refer to as a "normal" lens, one which has about the same magnification as the unaided eye.

BTW, I grew up in CV too! This is the first time in my life I've crossed paths with someone that comes from my same little town. Go Trojans!

I think you got your wording mixed up. a 50mm on a cropped body is getting to be more like a 75-80mm on a FF body.

So, on a cropped frame sensor you are looking more at a 35mm, which is around 56mm with Canon's 1.6x enhancement.

Biggest issue with the whole "matching the human field of view" is that we dont see in the aspect ratio of photography.

Are field of view is more akin to a widescreen movie at about 2.40:1...which is subconsciously why that is a format many people enjoy watching.

Canon has delayed it's release, along with the 500 and 600 F/4 they announced with it.

im looking for a low light lens for my t1i. ive used my friends 50mm 1.4 and love it. thinkin of picking up the 1.8 cause of the price but im hoping theres something a bit wider especially with the crop factor. any recommendations for something around the price range for the 50mm 1.8?

So you're saying you want a 1.8 or below lens for $100? Probably not gonna happen. The 50 1.8 is so popular because of the price vs quality (of optics, not build).

I haven't used my nifty fifty since October of last year!

I think he's saying he likes it, but wants something wider. I never really like Canon's 35mm for their cropped bodies. All are about $300, your only choice for cheap low light is the 50mm 1.8, about $120.

I am really surprised that Canon hasn't put out a 35mm 1.8 for DX, the one Nikon released 1 1/2 yrs ago, is killer.

yea i like the 50mm but the crop factor makes it not really what im looking for. maybe ill just save up for a 35mm. i just want a lens that i can take around at night/low light conditions. the kit 18-55 aint working out lol. how low (high?) f/ should i look for if i want to take some low lights without flash? i know the 1.8 is more than enough but how about something around 2.8?

^^ guess not.

unrelated:

wasn't the 85 1.2 around $2600 before? Has anyone noticed it's around $1850 these days?

I'm curious about it.

That with most things, priced high when they first come out. I'd rather have the 85 than the 135 for how you're most likely going to use it. But I hate the focus by wire, but with AF, it's not that much a bother.

There's been a massive sale/discount on lenses the past few days. And i think it's currently on the rebate program?

There was a good sale a few days ago on the 35L

Does anyone have both the EF-S 17-55 2.8 and EF 28mm 1.8?

I'm considering the 28mm 1.8 but don't know if I'm better off just continuing to use the 17-55 at 2.8 with IS as opposed to the 28mm at f/2 without IS.

Alternatively, perhaps the 24mm 1.4L may be an option, but that's almost $1k more.

What's your particular reason for wanting the 28mm?

I tend to zoom the 17-55 within the 24-35mm range a lot, so I figured a prime would fit a lot of my needs, give me a little more flexibility in lower light (I shoot a lot of dark scenes) and maybe be a little more portable when I'm just shooting around town.

I plan to keep the 17-55 2.8, so if it's not going to buy me much then I won't get a new lens.

Well IIRC the IS on the 17-55 provides 3 stops of compensation. Where as the 28mm 1.8 let's you shoot at 1.3stops faster shutter speed.

So it depends on what you are shooting in low light.

If you are shooting static subjects, stick with the 17-55, If you need to stop motion get the 28mm 1.8.

Well I got the 28mm 1.8 USM for $400 from a guy on CL. Included a B+W UV filter and hood. Good deal if you ask me!

I'll be taking it out to a dark lounge for some shenanigans with friends tonight.

Now I need to sell my 50mm 1.8 to make up some of the money.

It'll be a Nikon mount as well AND, the expected price will be around $10k.

Hi guys,

My Tamron 28-200 has bit the dust and I need to replace it. I mostly use it for taking shots of mountain views and other views from properties. Isn't there a "staple" Canon 200mm lens that's not terribly expensive? Target has a EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 for 199.99. The only other lens I use is my EFS 10-22 so I'm not sure if I want that much of a gap. Camera is a T1i.

Thanks

Ok, after a little research it looks like that EF 75-300 is not the way to go. Tell me what to get, peeps. Does anybody have a lens they would want to sell me? I need to get something soon and I need guidance!

I'm not very big on Canon's entry level lenses in this price/focal length. If you can (money wise) see if you could find a used 70-200mm F/4.

Also here are a lot of user reviews for Canon zooms.
