It's official: 5D Mark II

I think we have to wait and see if Digic 4 will speed things up for autofocus. Early reports suggest the AF is very good on the 5D2. Perhaps having the faster processor on board is improving the accuracy of the old school focus module.

From most talks the Digic IV is better than two III's. I know it's going to be good, but to not do anything but give it one cross point @2.8. MAN, it has me thinking what are they doing.

Where as, if Nikon's rumors of a MX medium format are true come Feb...I think its Nikon who is more interested in staying in the still world. Hell, Canon could have gone this route, looks like they arent.

As I said earlier I was initially disappointed with the news of the 5D2's AF. Because, I do agree that it should have been "upgraded" for this model. But, on the other hand, I have had ZERO problems with the 5D's AF. With 80-100k pics (or more) taken over the past 2 years, it's never failed me, left me frustrated (except right after I got the 24-70, which I later determined was the result of user issues ), or wanting something more. It's done everything I've needed it to. That being said, I have no doubt the 5D2 will meet my expectations.
I know there is a good amount of negativity regarding the 5D1's AF, thankfully it's never affected me personally. I read one reason Canon might have chosen to stick with the same AF is due to its "tried-and-tested" reliability and accuracy. This combined with Digic IV and you get win. Yeah.

I never knew they did have a video camera...let alone the still video camera as seen at the bottom in the pic...wow they were WAY ahead of their time.
To answer..not that I know of...I would have said they have never done video before...Not like Canon who actually created the prosumer market with the XL1.
#249
No they stuck with it because of Canon's Marketing Dept, I can't find the link. But they wanted more MP instead of AF. Of course there is something on RG's website about keeping the AF was best for THIS camera.

Yeah I didn't recall any Nikon video cams either. My reason for looking that up was my rebuttal to post #244. And that is, I think it's "OK" for Canon to not be focusing on still capture only, given their continued experience with video.

I know the article you are referring to, but there was a follow-up that said it was a hoax. The person worked for Canon, but they aren't an engineer nor are they in marketing. It was just some dude with an opinion... kind of like Dom.

I think its OK as well....provided they keep them seperate and not merge them into one domain. Though I also think and have always thought Canon's video camera have royally sucked

who rules the pro video world? Panasonic?
I could look it up but I know you don't mind talking about it.

now, while I still think Sony has a high rank, Its all up in the air.
You've got Sony, RED, Panavision (in house design with Sony's help to make the guts), the thompson Viper is still around.
Panasonic who I loved so much...well, I dont know whats up with them, they arent even seemingly trying to compete in the very pro filmmaking world.
For ENG....Sony and Panasonic.

That's good to know, we'll see. I'm just letting of a little steam. The Digic IV better have some good control of the AF system.

AHHHHHH AHA.
Finally some people who want the real pudding and not just the tech specs.
Some good. Finally, good see to high ISO in the right conditions to see things. There is a luminance grain. Its about on par or maybe a little bit better than the D3.
Some very nice images they made. If all of those came SOC...then its very contrasty, which I personally like.

Oh and BAM...I was right about the video delay
You'd almost be better off taking you video into FCP or Adobe or whatever and see what a screen grab looks like. Unless you dont mind cutting into your video.

Quote from the luminous landscape preview:
The camera shoots some 360 Megabytes per minute. That means a 4GB card will be able to record about 11 minutes. A 16 GB card about 45 minutes. Bring along lots of cards. Batteries as well. In just half a day of shoot I went though almost two batteries. But, since batteries and large capacity cards are relatively inexpensive, stock up.

And sadly, VERY video...30fps is just a losing battle. The lack of 24p really kills what that camera could as far making little short film look truly amazing.
And with that said. Because thats exactly what I dont want to see.

can totally tell the 30fps thing.. it totally doesn't look like "a movie"...
hope we see a firmware update with selectable 24/30 fps down the road!
I don't see it being a far-fetched possibility.

A lot of the shots were with unstabilized lenses. He used a mechanical stabilizer (a gyro) on the helicopter which may not be as effective as a stabilized lens in some cases. At least it doesn't have the jellocam effect that the D90 has...

I mean he used a basic non-stablized car mount for the driving footage. It was all over the place. A regular video camera would by no means be ultra smooth, but it wouldnt like it was driving through the DMZ either.
The helicopter...that shake was just unacceptable. Especially if he was using a gyro head. But I'd have to know the type of head.
I'm basing my comments on a what a real video/film camera would look like in comparison with the same shots. We dont have such things as stablized lenses or chips (minolta.)
I didnt notice any rolling shutter on the footage, but he didnt typically hang long enough on a shot either.
And again...the 30fps. well, its 30fps. even srika saw it this time.

Great...so they intercut footage with Canon's last failure of a HD which is a couple years old...and records to ultra shite HDV compression codecs...
brilliant...really.
And some of that running footage...the "gyro stabilizing device" looks like a gyro motor a steadicam operator would own...and that means it doesnt even appear it being used correctly.

did you read his blog at all? he has very little experience with video - part of the reason for doing this was to show how easy it was to do, without any knowledge of film-making.

Needs more Lemon Pledge
OK, just watched it a third time, and it is pretty neat what they were able to do with DOF, both expanding it and compressing it... Also the metering was effective for overall effect in certain scenes.

by jello cam are you talking about image shake or rolling shutter?

I don't think Canon is trying to put the big boys in the video world out of business with a 5D2, but you don't think the videos are pretty decent for a consumer camera? Especially considering it's not a video camera, it's a still camera with a video add-on. It sure beats any P&S video I've seen recently...
This is what I mean by "jellocam": http://s477.photobucket.com/albums/r...t=DSC_0012.flv
