HOLY ****: The video format is MPEG4, with a .mov extension (Canon is moving away from Motion JPEG to MPEG4 in its video-capable PowerShots too, including in the just-announced G10, SX1 IS, SX10 IS, SD990 IS and SD880 IS).

I'm still not interested in movie mode in an SLR, for the same reasons I have specified in other threads.
But I might just have to upgrade my SD800 now.

ISO 25,600 is pretty awesome, I don't see anything that's going to make me dump my 40D though. I wonder if there are any DR improvements?

apart from the 1080p video () this is very appealing to me:

Image sizes (RAW) * • 5616 x 3744 (21.0 MP)
• 3861 x 2574 (10.0 MP)
• 2784 x 1856 (5.2 MP)

for instance at the clubs and other more casual events, I would be at sRAW 10MP

This camera is pretty much exactly what I expected it would be. The specs are predictable and respectable, but I don't think I'll be canceling my 50D pre-order tomorrow. If they had released a small, fully weather sealed body, with 45-point AF and 16-bit files, it might have been a tougher call.

I think I'll start saving for the 1D4...

I think the price seems pretty good considering it's not much more than the 5dmkI. I was expecting something around the $3k mark.
I really want that 25,600 ISO........

battery grip still looks pretty bad though

since I can't afford it anyways, time to decide if I want the 50d, or the 5d mkI

Not sure, but all I know is that I want one.
I would've ventured to say that it's better, but hey...what do I know?

So the D90 was released very recently, with the first DSLR video mode. Is it not reasonable to think that Canon had already begun work on the 5D2's video mode? Curiosity killed the cat..

I don't see how they couldn't have been.
Is it possible to integrate a whole new aspect to a camera system between the D90's info release and now? Maybe video isn't too difficult to implement.
I guess it's possible; unlikely IMO though.

after reading more about it, it is pretty disappointing.

I am kinda glad it isn't everything I want, or else I might go take out a loan to go buy one.

I really wanted to see one w/ full weather sealing, or more focus points, at least hidden ones. Really doesn't seem all that different from the 50d, minus movie, and FF, and extra ISO stop.

I guess we'll have to see how it performs.

The difference between the 5D2 and the 50D is almost exactly the same differences between the 5D and 20D when they were both current models. A ~50% megapixel increase, full-frame sensor, and 1-stop ISO improvement.

The movie mode is pretty nifty, especially since it can autofocus, it has an external mic connector, and it can shoot mpeg4's. That's lightyears better than the D90, not that they were really competing against each other.

I know MP's aren't everything, but I've always wandered why Nikon hasn't ventured into the ranges that Canon has had.

It seems canon will always keep uber focus points / full weather sealing exclusive to it's '1D' lines.

dude, extract the pic from the 30 fps HD shot, fast enough?

it'd be sick to see the shots off a 300/2.8 or 500/4, can't wait to test it out.

It will be interesting to see...mainly because Canon also chose to go high MPX...which we know sort of kills ISO performance.

Either way, this is a big offering from Canon. And I think a good one.

I still REALLY hate the fucking video though. There have been morons online since the release of the D90 talking of trying to shoot their "movies" with this DSLRs

idiots.

Automatic peripheral illumination correction, utilising detailed EF lens information to optimise JPEG images straight out of the camera
is this Canon's version of Active D Lighting?
