btw speaking of flashes I read the reviews and decided to try out a Yongnuo YN-560 flash. The damn thing is a 580exII clone and its $60. I'm like, why not. Yeah, the reason why not is the damn thing was pretty much DOA. lol. I tested it out after it arrived, it looked decent enough and build quality looked OK, I was perturbed it did not have the red AF assist beam (I forgot about that) but it made sense given the price. It worked ok at home, then I took it to the NYE event, and the damn thing would turn on, and then turn off immediately. on both cameras. so yeah I am returning it. you get what you pay for.

batteries develop a "memory" if you always recharge after depleting it 25% eventually thats all it will really give you. As I said before about the number of duty cycles, that was pertaining to lead acid batteries, not rechargables, could be different, but the memory part Im almost positive remains the same. Either way, I personally would rather run them down before recharging them, just keep an extra set or two.
uhhhh were you using YOUR batteries in it?

250MBps XQD cards to replace CompactFlash in high-end cameras
Sorry if this is a repost, I know it's been briefly mentioned in the Nikon threads...
the Nikon D4 will be the first to use it
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/...nd-cameras.ars
the Nikon D4 will be the first to use it
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/...nd-cameras.ars
The CompactFlash Association announced on Wednesday that it has adopted a new specification and format to replace the venerable CompactFlash memory card. Tongue-twistingly dubbed "XQD," the PCI Express-based memory cards are smaller and faster than current CF cards, but should offer performance advantages over the current competing compact memory card format, Secure Digital (SD) and its recent SDHC and SDXC variants.
The XQD card measures 38.5 x 29.8 x 3.8mm, about three-quarters the size of a CF card and about the same thickness; physically it looks a bit like a tiny SSD drive. Unlike CF cards, which are based on the practically ancient PCMCIA standard, XQD cards are based on PCI Express, with a base maximum transfer rate of 2.5Gbps. That should be good for up to 250MB/s transfer rates, though the CFA is targeting real world write speeds of 125MB/s to start. Such write speeds would blow away all but the most expensive CF or SD cards currently available, and should be able to ramp up higher as technology matures and a future 5Gbps PCIe is implemented.
"The XQD format will enable further evolution of hardware and imaging applications, and widen the memory card options available to CompactFlash users such as professional photographers," CFA chairman Shigeto Kanda said in a statement.
The CompactFlash format likely has quite a bit of life left in it, as the most recent standard (UltraDMA mode 7) is designed for a maximum 167MB/s data transfer rate. However, as professional DSLRs offer increasingly higher megapixel counts and 1080p or higher video capture, the XQD format should allow memory cards to keep pace with the data requirements of future professional photography and videography equipment.
The XQD card will be publicly unveiled next February at the CP+ trade show in Japan. There's no word yet when we will see cameras that incorporate support for the new format.

going out shooting all day? Dont bother to check your ISO, just assume its where you want/always have it. The rust from not shooting shines through.
1600 on a 20D well, I was planning to do em in mostly black and white....the grain should add to it?

Back when I worked at my school paper there was a guy that would always forget that. He would be shooting sports at ISO 1600 on a bright and sunny day.
His shutter speeds were maxed out at 1/8000th and there was so much noise and loss of dynamic range.
He got lucky since he was the only one on assignment and got his photos in the paper.

I did that just last night, a friend and I were walking by City Hall and I noticed the columns were lit up amazingly and I'd never seen it before so I quickly grabbed the cam and set it on a newsstand box and snapped off 3 exposures for HDR since I knew it would make a great HDR and then I remember and realize and check my settings to confirm I was at ISO 640... I'm like and switch it to 100 quickly and go to take the shot again, and the column lights are off! I had inadvertently taken the previous shots at 9:59, and the lights turn off at 10pm. They literally turned off right after I was done with those 3 exposures. It was pretty weird!
But after doing NR in LR I was still able to get a good HDR from the ISO 640 shots.

nice save Rubin.
Because of my camera's inability to produce good pictures at high ISO's I never use them. And since 99% of my shots are taken off a tripod it usually lives at iso100. The problem was that the last time I shot was around Halloween, and I was shooting a huge pumpkin display with a shit ton of people around so I had to handhold, ended up at 1600. FAIL

btw speaking of flashes I read the reviews and decided to try out a Yongnuo YN-560 flash.

I tried some rechargeables today (and old ones at that) and the flash works.

So you like it then?
The AF assist is something I'd be pretty sad to lose, but that's a sweet price. Does it work with Canon flashes as a slave?

well, I havent been able to try it out yet. This weekend I will though at a b'nai mitzvah. And, it does not have any kind of wireless control (another reason for its craazy low price) but they do also have a $160 model that has it. I figure if I slap this thing on the 7D the AF should be OK without any beam.

Anyone have an android phone or tablet and try the Android DSLR controller?

Not sure if this has been discussed before. Looks pretty interesting, but I don't have an android (yet).

YN-560 is a pretty good flash, but it is manual only and no bells or whistles. Most people use it with wireless triggers. I have one and use it with the Cactus v5s with no issues. You can use it as an optical slave, but I had issues with the 7D preflash setting it off early. Should be able to get around that, but haven't figured it out yet.

Yes, but you don't need anything that fancy for these flashes, since they won't take advantage of any ETTL functions. The Cactus v5s are about $60 for a pair:
http://www.gadgetinfinity.com/cactus...er-v5-duo.html
I have two pairs of these and they work well. Of course, any changes to flash power, you have to make manually.
You could also use something even cheaper like the YN RF-306.
Don't know anything about this seller, but here are the YN triggers:

yup, lots of stuff to learn about and buy. I generally buy a few things that sound cool and never learn how to use them properly
There have been a few recent short lived ebay deals on the 5DII and 24-105 combos for 2400 and 2500 on ebay through well respected stores (like Beach). It's probably a good thing I heard about them too late.

Lexar Launches Industry First 256GB Memory Card
It wasn't that long ago that we celebrated an 8GB card, and not far before that we marvelled at 1GB CF MicroDrives. Today memory card storage capacities are getting absolutely ridiculous. The latest from Lexar raises the bar yet again.
The company's newest contribution to the memory race is a whopping 256GB CF card - twice the capacity of the highest storage card out now. It offers 400x speed which guarantees a minimum transfer rate of 60MB a second. That's enough for high FPS shooting and 1080p video recording.
The new capacities of the Lexar Professional 400x CF card empower photographers to just keep shooting," says marketing director Manisha Sharma, "without the need to change cards or risk missing once-in-a-lifetime shots or footage."
Lexar's 256GB CF card will be available in the first half of the year at a yet unnamed price.

btw this girl is crazy, she wants about an hour of processing done on each photo, for a reasonable price. And there are 400 photos. I told her I would charge $75 per photo. That's $30k. lol.
she sent me some sample photos, from the way she described it, I expected them to be severely underexposed, horrible composition, bad lighting, etc. etc. probably taken with an entry-level type camera. That's what I was expecting. The photos are quite nice. Taken with a D700, the lighting is nice, composition is good too. This girl is bitching about her hair, the wrinkles in her dress, her dress is "showing too much" on the front (I'd have to agree on that lol), the wrong pair of shoes in one photo-set (they were supposed to be different shoes), the color of her hair, her makeup, and the background. Now, tell me how many of those variables have to do with the photographer. LOL.

some of it does, you can see these things before you take a picture. like the positioning/type of material/type of her dress could cause it to poof up and make her look huge, more flattering poses, background etc.
it would probably be best if you work with her to sit down with her, see her expectations of the photos, things she doesnt like, does like etc.
maybe hire a MUA to help you/her out.
