You don't always have to chance to back up, plus when you back up, you take yourself away from the subject, in that case the barn.

A 10mm lens on a cropped body offers an angle of view of 109 degrees.

A 17mm lens on a cropped body offers and angle of view of 79.20 degrees.

That angle of view doesn't change by backing up...

Totally agree, and I own a 10-22 for a cropped Canon. Having said that, I rarely ever take the 17-55 off unless I am specifically going for the "wide angle distorted" effect...

My thought on this discussion: it goes both ways. Just as you can speak about the world of landscape photography you are missing by not having a very wide angle lens, you can say the same thing about a zoom. And that just kinda makes me go

On a completely different topic, I am now splitting my time for photo viewing about 50/50 between flickr and 500px.

Flickr has the groups that are fantastic and really have a good community. Unfortunately, it has become almost painful to view images on Flickr for me.

Spending ten minutes looking on Flickr and then ten minutes on 500px, the later is a welcome refresher and seems relaxing and viewer oriented. Flickr, not so much...

Is the "Photo Experience" any better? I am too chicken to try it.

^ Personally I'm not a huge fan of flickr, don't really like how it's laid out. 500 on the other hand I love.

Exactly how I feel but I think Flickr's new UI (not the Photo Experience) that they recently switch to adopted some of 500px's elements.

I don't have the pro acct. I just went basic when they changed formats and increased their limits.

Anyway...everything seems normal again.

I love how everyone wore suits and hats back then.
The closer-up shots with the shallow DOF look cool - the lines used to keep the text straight make it look even cooler.

It didn't occur to me until TODAY that the ONLY RAW size on the D800 is full 36mp!!! Wow. That camera is for a very specific purpose indeed. It's designed for doing fashion and editorial work where that level of detail in the DPI's is required, or for doing large prints. And, ideally if you are a pro shooter you'd want the D800 along with another DSLR for 'regular' kinds of purposes. For instance one of the pro shooters I know on FB has a D800 and a D4 for that 'regular' purpose.

great story to share. some of you may have already seen this on my FB but for the rest of the class:

my younger sister got 2 kittens 4 months ago and started taking photos of them, first with her iphone, then with some encouragement from you know who, she started using her D7000 and 50 1.8. And at first she was doing you know, OK, I mean this was her first time even trying a DSLR. We both thought it would be a good idea for her to get a dedicated Instagram going for the 2 kitties. So that's what she did, 4 months ago. And she continued taking and uploading photos to this page. She started getting popular and getting featured on various pages and such. It was really something to see it blossoming like that, and so quickly. She was almost at 2000 followers. Then, yesterday, Instagram featured one of her photos on its page. This photo is now at over 463,000 Likes and she has gained 10,000 followers over night, and still building. I am so happy for her and to see this progress is just really crazy! I mean it's causing me to rethink everything I've done...

check it the pic on Instagram:
Instagram

she is taking some incredible photos of her kitties, have a look:

Congrats to her man!

It's just crazy how something so simple could spark so much popularity. Not saying it in a bad way. More like in a blessed way.

Cool. This may be a stupid question, but isn't instagram only for phone pics? How does a dslr figure in?

I think that's how it started, but a lot of people upload their photos from cameras to Instagram, and post just for the sake of the followers

yeah, that's the impression I had early on when I started mine - I would post a DSLR pic here and there but mostly I tried to use it for it's "intended" purpose - but seriously - there are so many damn pictures out there - and the lines are so blurred - nobody really cares anymore - and the fact that Instagram itself shared her photo and account, when most of it has recently been DSLR photos tells you what their stance is on it. It's motivated me to create a new Instagram purely for Chicago photos - a big part of the appeal is a specialty.

Here is my new one:
http://instagram.com/rschicago/

so I'm going to start populating that and see what I can do.

The number of people that have added me as a contact on flickr has exploded the past few months...

P7Q26c2.png

Since I'm not shooting very much recently, I'm just moving old things back up to top of the stream - and in a day they get 10x the views they had in 2 years. Everything old is new again.

occasionally, when I haven't gone out to shoot, I get bored and re-pp photos since my skills and style has changed over the years, and re-upload them... often times they get Explore'd.

I honestly think Flickr's new layout and format is getting more views for everyone. I hit 1 million views back on Aug. 27th, and I'm already 285k views on the way to the 2nd million. Before the Flickr change, I didn't average 3-4k views/day like I do now

Where did you get this information? Since flickr changed up their game, I have had a lot following me as well. Mostly they follow Rubin then tag me as well. I talked him about a while back, he's getting thousands of followers since the change up.

interesting, but what was wrong with the old way?

i still think i want to pick up the sport one. the rs-5 i have right now gets tiring to me and digs into my neck with the straight pad instead of the curved on on the sport.

plus i bought it thinking it would fit my iphone 3GS, stupid cellphone pocket was designed for non smart phones / flip phones.

I have the DR-1, and the one thing that does bug a little is that the 2 cameras tend to swing around a bit too much. I know they added something adjustable on the strap to "help" prevent a back swing, but the cameras will still swing around even with the stopper thingy. With the new Yeti design, the camera that's hanging across like a sling will NOT swing as much.... but I would think the other one should still swing around like the DR-1. Which is why the advice that you attach the heavier camera on the side that's going across your chest.

see how in this stock photo of the DR-1, the guy has to hold on to both cameras? If you're shooting an event where you need to hustle around, that's what you HAVE to do, which is why a lot of photogs are now switching to the Cotton Carrier system (which I love too)

I love my RS-6, it feels so much better carrying around instead of the stock strap that comes with it. i don't feel as tired walking around with it than the regular strap.

I still don't understand why camera companies haven't switched to the sling type style straps... the stock ones that go around your neck are just terrible. It doesn't cost any more to make them in the sling style design.
