It's striking, but I won't do that look on my own because I prefer range over contrast. You know I'm a HDR junkie... I like keeping those details in the shadows visible (if they exist in the photo). If you compare both photos you'll see the details in the dark areas are lost on the contrasty one.

You can still have a HDR image pop while keeping the details.
What you lost in detail in that 2nd image, is hugely minimal, almost negligible. And it keeps the image looking fresh as opposed to something you'd find in a newspaper from 10 years ago.

that doesn't really make a difference to me. for any photo, there's gonna be people who like it, and people who don't like it, and in between.

Well, obviously it made some difference...you played with it and posted it after you said you were happy with everything as is....

Contrast is what makes the world do round. deep blacks are where its at.
The shadows mixed with the hot pavement in that first shot looks fantastic.

that shot is more about the B&W processing, not nearly as dramatic SOOC...

I shoot people
the roof, making it a retractable top. They are almost done and that night they were testing the color changing lights
And yes, it DOES look like a UFO

^^ Pretty hostas!
I had some equestrian photo shoots yesterday. It was blustery and overcast all day, and we had to pause a couple of sessions to hide from heavier rain passing through. This was taken during one of the pauses while we waited in the barn...
