naturally, don't want blurry pics after all.
+1. Last thing I want to do is put a $70 filter in front of my $1500 lens. Yes I know they make better UV filters but at that point just pay for the insurance on the lens.

I miss my 03 CL-S :(
Nice city scenes!
Here's another sunset from PR... Other than some deepening of blacks, colors weren't messed with much.

I shoot people
in this shot, it was just one light, a Paul C Buff Alienbees B1600 with a very large octabox to the left of the camera and a VERY large silver reflector to the right of the camera. I added another light later in the shoot, where it was aimed at the seamless grey paper roll to give it more depth.
The building I live in has a bunch of rooms that can be used by any of the tenants... The particular room I used for this shoot is call the "Arts and Crafts Room" and there's a ping pong table in there, but I swear, I think only 2 tenants use it (to play ping pong)... The setup takes me about 45 minutes to put together and then another 30 minutes to take down (I don't do this for money so I don't have an assistant, sometimes my wife helps out). That room looks like this:
and by the time I'm done setting up, it might look something like this... however, this particular setup was NOT the setup for the picture above
I probably have about 3 -4 different setups I go to depending on what look I'm going for.
As for the model... it's kinda funny how I met her... Back when the leaves where so beautiful with the fall colors, another photographer friend and I went around scouting out spots to do couples photoshoots (perhaps for engagements) we found this awesome spot and we were just doing test shots without any subjects... Galina was walking by with her husband and we kindly asked them to be our test subject and they were fine with it.... Totally unplanned, some of the shots came out great
(yeah, I don't get the haircut her husband has either )
<iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63271580@N00/15758827005/player/" width="1024" height="576" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>
anyways, turned out she's done a little modelling, we exchanged numbers and ended up doing a shoot (without the husband)
as for some of the other people I've photographed, I met most of them when I shot Vancouver Fashion Week, I've shot it twice and was able to network through that event (with models, makeup artists other photographer etc etc). I don't know if I'll shoot another VFW because some of the people that run the show are a-holes
.

Great post Ken! I love seeing peoples set ups and work spaces. Can you post the shot with the back drop lit as you mentioned?

and this one, the light was meant to be aimed higher, but you can still see a slight hint of it. By the way, I just used a cheap Yongnuo speedlite for that

Thanks for the descriptions, I love reading on how to do things especially with portraits where I have nearly zero experience so I really appreciate it!
So you do this just for fun? Essentially trade the model's time for free shots? I really need to find a local group to work with...I now have a good space in my basement that can be set up as a studio.
Edit: One more question, what do you do for a general post workflow? I think we need to resurrect the post process thread with some real before and afters plus how-tos. I can rock landscape editing but portraits are much harder.

you just gotta start asking people (without crossing the line of a creeper ) I started off asking friends (doesn't hurt to ask the better looking ones first )
Right now, it's just for trade and a lot of people are fine with that... Galina for example, she's Russian and has no family here in Vancouver (other than her husband, and neither does he for that matter), so when I took those photos of them with the leaves, they totally appreciated it because they were able to send/post good photos of them for families to see back home. The truth is, technically, I can't work in Canada yet... pretty soon I'll be able to, but until then, I'll just shoot as much as I can and gain experience because eventually, I'd do it on the side for extra cash (which will probably end up going to more camera gear anyways )
trading is okay with me, the only thing is, sometimes people NOT paying you can be kinda flakey. You can try signing up at Model Mayhem but I find a lot of the models there are the most flakey of all... Try looking up local Facebook photography groups, I've connected with some people going that route actually.
as for post processing goes... I'm actually a total Photoshop noob, I have it, but I don't really use it... I'm pretty much all Lightroom, but soon I'll have to learn because I know I'm missing out on a lot being PS challenged

^ I use LR as well. Coming from PS, LR is worlds better for photography. PS does the same stuff, you just need to be better at it to get the same results.
PS is great for graphic design though.

^ LR can do all of that.
Question for you guys, how do you promote your work? A lot of you have TONS of followers on Flickr and other such things, how did they all find you? I'm working to start selling prints and making at least a little bit of cash off of this hobby and just curious how you guys go about doing that.

There. I said it.
You want a bunch of followers? Hire a couple of hot strippers to pose for you and post that stuff everywhere!
I'm just teasing, I have no idea. I have four followers and I think they are all my family or people who are incarcerated and forced to look at mediocre photos as some kind of therapy.

I just uploaded a lot of pics on Redbubble and Society6, you set your own prices, and they pack and ship them when they sell, similar to Fine Art America. Which I need to start uploading more on...
I too am looking to make some money from my photos...

lulz, me too. I want to go back and re-edit some of the pictures simply because of how much I've learned from editing in the past year or so. Maybe it'll make my boring pictures better.

I just can't get over the fact that I don't have to do landscapes in HDR with this camera.

Yes! I'm really shocked. I can push shots by absurd amounts. It is really taking some mental adjustment on my part to get used to this kind of latitude in a RAW file. It's exactly what I wanted as far as DR is concerned. AF is great...IQ is awesome...
