Cannot wait to see how Honda responds to this.

I don't think Honda needs to do anything. The vast vast vast majority of sales of these cars are the 4-cylinder models. People just really don't need a 270hp Camry. It's almost too much motor for this car.

The Accord 6-speed V6 does 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. That is more than adequate for a midsize family sedan.

If you want more motor, I'd recommend a sport sedan like the IS, TL, G35, etc..

The Accord sells very well and is a class leader according to much of the automotive press.

An essential and primary goal was to ensure that even the least expensive Camry is equipped with a comprehensive list of features to enhance its comfort, convenience and value.

The CE gets an impressive list of standard features, including halogen headlamps with an automatic on/off feature, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, a six-speaker 160-watt digital AM/FM/CD audio system with an auxiliary audio jack and a 2.4L four-cylinder engine with a five-speed manual transmission. It also comes with 16-inch wheels, a full complement of seven airbags, a vehicle immobilizer and four-wheel disc brakes.

The Camry LE adds to this package a long list of additional features, including an in-key remote keyless entry and eight-way-adjustable power driver's seat. A V6 engine with dual exhausts is also available.

Toyota's decision to distance the sporty Camry SE from the other grades had a significant effect upon the chassis specifications being developed for the new Camry SE. As was the case in previous years, LE and XLE use basically the same chassis specs while the SE uses springs, antiroll bars, shocks and bushings with firmer, sportier values than those used in the other two grades.

But for 2007, there are other differences, as well. The SE has a standard full body kit that positions the car 0.4-inches (10mm) lower than other Camry grades. In addition, a V-shaped brace is added to the SE's body between trunk and cabin and stabilizing braces were added to the underbody to increase the body's torsional rigidity. Finally, to make the SE more appealing to buyers seeking a more dynamic driving experience, the SE delivers performance enhanced by underbody aerodynamics borrowed from Toyota's experience in Formula One.

Tuning the SE chassis involved making the underbody as flat as possible to smooth the airflow under the car, and also to increase the speed of the airflow. Engineers also carefully adjusted the balance between front and rear downforce. The result is exceptional stability at elevated speeds.

Features standard on the SE include sporty 17-inch aluminum wheels, its own distinct black, honeycomb-style grille, ground effects body enhancement, smoked tint halogen headlamps, unique sport-trimmed interior in dark charcoal or medium gray with a leather-wrapped, three-spoke steering wheel and amber-colored optitron gauges.

The XLE's list of standard features includes an upgraded dual-zone automatic climate controlled system with steering-wheel controls, a premium 440-watt JBL audio system with Bluetooth™ technology for hands-free calling, wood-style trim, moonroof, rear reclining seats, fog lamps and 16-inch aluminum wheels. Four-cylinder models are equipped with standard special seat fabric designed to be gentle on the skin, while V6 models feature standard leather-trimmed seats.

Options available on select Camry grades include a tilt/slide moonroof, heated seats, voice-command DVD navigation system, leather-trimmed seating, rear spoiler, Vehicle Stability Control and a Smart Entry and Smart Start system with push-button start that allows drivers to lock, unlock, or start the car just by carrying the Smart Key on his/her person.

Engines and Transmissions
The 2AZ-FE engine, standard across the Camry grade lineup, is based on the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine from last year, but is substantially upgraded. This redesign employs optimized intake and exhaust systems, as well as strategies that reduce internal friction and enhance engine-block/crankcase rigidity. The result is improved power output with exceptional fuel economy and reduced noise and vibration levels.

This engine is based on bore/stroke dimensions of 3.48 x 3.78 inches (88.5 x 96mm) for a displacement of 2,362 cc, or 144.1 ci, and develops 158 SAE horsepower. During their revision of the existing engine, engineers boosted the compression ratio slightly to 9.8:1, altered the cam profile and paid particular attention to reducing friction through strategies such as reducing the tension of the piston rings while increasing their tensile strength. Finally, they reduced piston weight, optimized the balance shaft, improved sound insulation performance of the engine cover and improved the engine mounts. With this engine, Camry buyers have the choice of either five-speed manual or electronically operated five-speed automatic transmission.

For those looking for more power, the new 2GR-FE engine – a 24-valve, DOHC 3.5L V6 - is available in the LE, SE and XLE. This engine is designed to deliver up to 40 percent better acceleration over the 2006 model year Camry 3.3-liter V6. The V6 is based on bore/stroke measurements of 3.70 x 3.27 inches (94.0 x 83.0 mm) for a displacement of 210.9 ci, or 3,459cc, and uses a compression ratio of 10.8:1 to generate 268 SAE horsepower.

The dual camshafts, which are chain-driven, employ Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT-i) for optimal cam timing – and therefore maximum power production - at all RPM levels.

Engineers improved airflow through every element of the engine's intake tract. This includes improving air-cleaner shapes, intake ducts and the intake manifold and cylinder head intake ports. In addition, valve openings were enlarged and exhaust pressure loss was reduced from the exhaust manifold to the muffler. Engineers modified the shape of the Camry's taper-squish combustion chambers to make maximum use of that air. And they provided exhaust manifolds that incorporate catalytic converters for greater efficiency.

Harnessing this engine's output is an all-new six-speed automatic transmission that uses 21 percent fewer parts than the conventional five-speed automatic transmission it replaces. This new transmission, which can be shifted sequentially, relies upon a newly developed gear train that uses a Ravigneaux-type compound planetary gear for reduced size, weight and friction.

This new transmission also uses a quick-response, low-friction clutch pack for enhanced fuel economy; an ultra-flat, low-inertia torque converter for high transmission efficiency; a set of high-response, low-slip clutch packs and new electronic and hydraulic control systems that incorporate an intelligent shift control that learns driver's driving style and selects gears based on that style.

As a result of this development, transmission kickdown response was cut to 0.5 seconds, more than twice as fast as the response of the transmission this new one replaces.

Preview: 2007 Toyota Camry - - Source: The Car Connection

Toyota today pulled the wraps off the sixth generation of its best-selling Camry sedan, which will replace the current version that was introduced for 2002. As expected, the new 2007 Camry is highly influenced by the current Avalon, introduced last year, and also inherits various design cues and features from upmarket Lexus models. While the dimensions aren't markedly different than those of the current Camry it will replace, the proportions have been changed to make it more rakish and flowing, with a more sophisticated headlight and grille treatment, a softer-sloping rear pillar, and the wheels pushed farther out to the corners, increasing wheelbase by about two inches.

The Camry will have a standard 158-hp, 2.4-liter in-line four that's a revision of the existing engine. The next generation V-6 makes a much bigger leap in power, with the optional 3.5-liter - basically the same engine as is offered in the Avalon - offering 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. The V-6 is mated to an all-new six-speed automatic transmission, while the four-cylinder goes with either a five-speed automatic or a five-speed manual.

Most notably, though, Toyota is offering the latest version of its Hybrid Synergy Drive system on the Camry, pairing it with a four-cylinder engine - a different, Atkinson-cycle, 147-hp version of the 2.4-liter-for an emphasis on fuel economy rather than all-out performance. Combined with the electric motor system, the front-wheel-drive powertrain delivers up to 192 hp. The Hybrid carries a PZEV emissions rating. EPA fuel economy for the Camry Hybrid will be 43 city, 37 highway, with performance predicted to be a bit better than the four and V-6 and an official range of over 700 miles from its 17.1-gallon fuel tank.

While Camry Hybrids are packaged much the same way as the other models - the evidence of some good engineering work to find places for the bulky elements like the hybrid transaxle, inverter, and battery-they get a slightly different appearance, including blue-tinted headlight reflectors, LED taillamps, and a matte-chrome grille in front that flows into the fascia.

Especially of note is the way in which Toyota plans to market the Hybrid - more like a powertrain option than as an entirely different model. Even more surprising is that the hybrid likely won't be the most expensive Camry in the lineup - though demand at dealerships might drive premiums. Initial marketing plans call for the Hybrid to slot in below a loaded V-6. According to insiders, Toyota plans to treat the hybrid system as a premium powertrain option, a step up from the four-cylinder, but appealing to different customer priorities than the V-6.

Fuel economy will be a strength on the other Camry models, too, with four cylinder models offering up to 25 city, 34 highway, and V-6s getting 22 city, 31 highway.

All Camrys now have VSC stability control as standard equipment, while Hybrid models get the integrated VDIM system. ABS and Brake Assist will be standard on all models, as will seven airbags including seat-mounted side airbags, side-curtain bags, and a driver-side knee airbag. In addition, all models go to a seat design that helps reduce neck injury.

The '07 Camry will be offered with a wide range of equipment, in base CE, LE, sporty SE, or luxurious XLE trims. The more seriously sporty SE grade now gets stiffer springs and dampers, a solid anti-roll bar, and stabilizing braces underhood and behind the rear seatback, along with an aerodynamic package and other performance cues. The top-of-the-line XLE emphasizes Lexus-like interior appointments and features, including dual-zone climate control with ionizer and filter, and upholstery treated with silk extract. A new-generation navigation system will be optional, as will both a smart-key system and a remote engine starter will be available. Standard features on the XLE will include a moonroof, real woodgrain, and reclining rear seats.

A 160-watt CD sound system with input jack will be standard on all Camrys, while the top JBL Premium option offers Bluetooth telephony with voice dialing, along with 440 watts and eight channels of sound.

The new model boosts its North American content to 80 percent, and most Camrys will be built in Kentucky.

I think Toyota will have better success going for the fuel economy side of the hybrid option than the performance one that Honda chose with the Accord.

Something that may have been lost in all the hoopla - very little changed with the drivetrain on the 4cyl models. Usually when you get a new model you get a new engine in this class. The BMW method of model development creeping into the regular models as well? Has Toyota held back some new DI 4 cyl engine on purpose? Or the cut throat competition in this class precluded spending more on the drivetrain? :toocool:

DETROIT — Toyota is considering the idea of putting a switch into such hybrid models as the Prius and the Lexus RX 400h, letting drivers alternate at will between "green," or most fuel-efficient, and "power," or most performance-oriented driving.

The president of Toyota's U.S. sales unit, Jim Press, told The Wall Street Journal that the automaker is currently studying a switch system that would work in a similar way to a car's air-conditioning controls.

The Journal quotes U.S. Lexus chief Bob Carter as saying the luxury division wants to meet the desires of customers for "no-compromise" hybrid vehicles. He comments that drivers "may want fuel economy" in everyday driving but "Sunday you might want to go and drive the wheels off." Carter told the paper that Toyota is currently working on a switch that would let drivers switch between the two settings.

What this means to you: A "green" switch could make it harder to choose between the angel on your left shoulder and the devil on your right foot. But leave it to Toyota to think of a way to make both environmentalists and enthusiasts like hybrids.

but aren't there existing systems in cars nowadays that adapt the car tranny/throttle response/etc. to the driving characteristics?

with DBW and the computing power in cars, I don't think it would be hard to incorporate the "green" or "sport" modes automatically into hybrid cars...depending on how someone is driving the car's brain can figure if the driver wants to conserve gas or drag his hybrid and make the "switch" automatic.

phile 01-12-2006 10:59 AM

^ My thoughts exactly. Why need a switch...just stomp on the pedal for performance, tap lightly for fuel consumption. :dunno:

Anyways, looks like Accord's going to have to go hybrid for its 4-cylinder model now that Camry is doing it.

biker 01-12-2006 11:51 AM

I don't get it - this is not some M5 where you want to dumb down the engine to "only" 400HP for the valet with a flick of a switch.

How much performance can you get out of a Prius?

As was said above, your right foot would work just as well as a switch.

phirenze 01-12-2006 02:30 PM

My first car, a 1989 V6 camry had a button that would allow you to switch between two shift profiles for the automatic tranny. I know it's not exactly the same thing but I thought it was a great feature. There was a very noticable difference in fuel economy between the two settings when driven hard. In economy mode you could still floor it and hold until you reach speed and the tranny would save you fuel by shifting early.

If Honda ever elects to import its diesel powered Accord it will probably turn in similar numbers and cost far less.

SteVTEC 01-19-2006 11:23 AM

Skimmed most of this thread...

I agree that some sort of intermediate engine choice would be nice for those that want something a little more powerful than the base 4-cyl but don't want or need 268hp (and the hybrid sounds nice, but it's a lot more expensive and also has a lot more weight to drag around). The question is how to do it though.

Acura cranked up their 2.4L I-4 from the Accord for TSX duty to the tune of 200+hp, but that engine is still down on torque, and doesn't get much if any better mileage than a lot of V-6 engines that are more powerful. There's Inline-5 engines but they're quirky and sound funny and would also have low volume potential and also low potential for parts sharing with other platforms so that's not a good option either. VW has a 2.5L Inline-5 as the base engine on the new Jetta. I like VW's approach of direct injection turbo-4's though, like on the Passat. 200hp/207tq or whatever it is, excellent powerband, very little lag, and that'd probably be enough for me especially with a DSG gearbox. But in the Passat, the 2.0 FSI engine with the 6spd auto still only gets 22/31 mpg. That's not any better than Toyota's 3.5L which makes far more power. That's the problem with turbocharged 4-cylinder engines. Their part-load efficiency still cannot match larger naturally aspirated engines even with direct injection. They're getting close, but I have yet to see a smaller DISI turbo engine match power and efficiency of a similarly powered equally state of the art V6.

One thing's for sure. Modern V6 engines can offer a ton of power and also incredible efficiency. I think these power wars are great, especially when efficiency keeps on improving right along with the power. :toocool:

In celebration of the diverse appeal of the big game, Toyota has developed a "hybrid" commercial featuring English and Spanish to showcase the all-new 2007 Camry Hybrid that runs on gas and electrical power.

The spot, developed by Conill, Toyota's Hispanic ad agency, features a Hispanic father and his son driving in their new Camry Hybrid. Though the father speaks English, a Spanish accent is detectable. The son, however, speaks perfect English with no trace of an accent.

The father explains how the new hybrid can switch back and forth between gas and electric power. His son immediately relates his family's experience to the vehicle and says, "Like you, with English and Spanish!" The father tells his son why he speaks two languages and why he bought a hybrid. He says, "I'm always thinking of your future." Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive(R), the company's gas-electric hybrid powertrain technology, logo features prominently at the end of the 30-second spot.

"The Camry Hybrid ad represents people moving forward in their lives and creating a positive future for themselves and their families," says Jim Farley, Toyota Motor Sales vice president of marketing. "We're using a unique fusion of language and culture to introduce our new Camry Hybrid."

This is the first time Toyota has developed a bicultural, bilingual ad. With Spanish and English dialogue, the hybrid ad builds awareness with story-telling and heart-felt sentiment that will resonate across cultures.

The ad targets all Super Bowl viewers, with a special nod to Hispanic viewers, who represent a vital Toyota demographic. Since May 2004, Toyota has ranked number one in the Hispanic market. The Camry is the third best-selling car in the Hispanic market. Toyota's leadership in this market is the result of consistent advertising efforts over the last 15 years.

Of all Super Bowl viewers, seven percent are Hispanic. Twenty-five percent of all Hispanics eighteen and over watch the Super Bowl. Sixty-two percent of those viewers are men and fifty percent are under 35, representing Toyota's key target audiences. According to Nielsen, the No. 2 prime-time show Hispanics watch is "Monday Night Football."

As one of the first automotive manufacturers to advertise in Spanish, Toyota's "Moving Forward" theme acknowledges life-stages and goals of the general American market; the customer's past and future direction. The direction of "Moving Forward" is also relevant to Hispanics because it speaks to their goals and stages for their children as they pursue the American dream, while retaining their unique Hispanic heritage. By combining both English and Spanish, the ad concept leverages the hybrid nature of blending languages and culture while preserving a unique identity. On a general level, all viewers can appreciate the universal truth that all parents wish to make decisions that will lead to a better life for their children.

In addition to advertising in the General and Hispanic markets, advertising specific to the African American and Asian markets is also being developed.

Toyota's sixth-generation Camry will debut in March with the hybrid version available at dealers a few months later. The new Camry features a sleek new style and offers exceptional performance, safety and comfort with innovation not seen before in midsize sedans.

Ready to spoil a new round of frugal family buyers — and keep its best-selling title.
by Bengt Halvorson (2006-01-30)

What's probably the most common car onU.S. streets isn't a Chevy or a Ford, but a Toyota. The Camry has been the best-selling car in America for eight of the past nine years. More than ten million Camrys have been sold since 1983, when the model was first introduced, and the majority of those have been sold in the U.S.

With each new Camry much improved, and an even better value it seems, expectations for the new '07 model are high.

There's also the issue that the Camry is just so darned good and efficient at being a comfortable, economical, trouble-free sedan that it has come to be viewed as an appliance, and has gathered descriptions, according to Toyota execs, like "bread-and-butter," and "dad's car." And driving a Camry sort of lends itself to an "I don't care about cars" anonymity. Is the Camry boring, or is it just too darned good?

That was the challenge: how to bring more style - and a little more driving enjoyment - to the Camry without alienating any of Camry's very loyal customer base.

To start, the team behind the latest Camry sought to add much more upscale character to the car. While that was also said to be a goal of the last-generation Camry, it's really worked this time. The Camry's exterior shape emphasizes sharp surface lines and a multi-leveled hood and rear decklid, along with an emphasis on continuity that's echoed inside as well. As expected, the new Camry is highly influenced by the current Avalon, introduced last year, and also inherits various design cues and features from upmarket Lexus models. If you squint, on the outside you can even see a little influence from BMW.

Similar dimensions, reapportioned

While the dimensions aren't markedly different than those of the current Camry it will replace, the proportions have been changed, too, to make it more rakish and flowing, with a more sophisticated headlight and grille treatment, a softer-sloping rear pillar, and the wheels pushed farther out to the corners, increasing wheelbase by about two inches.

Versus the outgoing Camry, these changes help stretch the usable cabin space, too, with improved legroom front and back and a revised driving position.

The instrument panel area boasts an extensive redesign, too - it's set rather low, and also seems to wrap around more effectively, emphasizing horizontal lines that continue to the doors - while the rest of the interior has some more subtle changes in packaging. The center stack and console - with shift knob and storage bin side by side - appear quite wide, separating the driver and passenger areas, and remind us of the Lexus GS. The instrument panel design is also all-new, with the self-lit Optitron gauges that have graced the Lexus lineup for a few years, and controls that generally look more like those in a luxury car than a basic sedan.

Interior space is one of the more important selling points for mid-size sedan buyers, and that's been rethought. All Camrys get a revised layout; the front seats have a new Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) design for better neck support in accidents, and the seatbacks have been redesigned. Heated leather seats are available on SE, XLE, and Hybrid models, while new cloth upholstery, treated with Sericin, from silkworm fibers, is offered on XLE. On CE, LE, and Hybrid models, the rear seats are split 60/40 and fold down, while XLE models get a 40/20/40-split reclining rear seat with armrest and pass-through. On all models, the steering wheel now gets tilt and telescope adjustability to better accommodate varied driver sizes.

And to accommodate varied needs, there are also plenty of Camry variations offered - everything from a basic, frugal four-cylinder, manual-transmission version to one with a powerful V-6 and a truly Lexus-like level of luxury features, to a new, much anticipated, Hybrid model for those who are willing to spend a little extra money.

43-mpg Hybrid model

That's the big news. Toyota has installed its Hybrid Synergy Drive in the Camry; it pairs an eco-tuned, Atkinson-cycle (high-compression), 147-hp version of the 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 105-kW electric motor. The motor can deliver up to 203 lb-ft of instantaneous torque, while the combined powertrain makes 192 hp.

Camry Hybrids are packaged much the same way as the other models - with similar interior and trunk space. That alone is evidence of there's evidence of a good design, as engineers had to find places for bulky elements like the hybrid transaxle, inverter, and battery.

Hybrids also get a slightly different appearance, including blue-tinted headlight reflectors, LED taillamps, and a matte-chrome grille in front that flows into the fascia.

The combined front-wheel-drive powertrain delivers up to 192 hp. The Hybrid carries a PZEV emissions rating. EPA fuel economy for the Camry Hybrid will be 43 city, 37 highway, which makes for a range of around 700 miles from its 17.1-gallon fuel tank. And it drives much like a standard Camry, which we'll get to in more detail just below.

As for the Camry's standard powertrain, there's no big surprise - it's a 158-hp, 2.4-liter in-line DOHC four that's a revision of the existing base engine, and it should boast especially low maintenance costs. The four-cylinder gets various design improvements. A new 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 replaces the 3.3-liter V-6 as optional, and makes 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque, significantly more than the 3.3. The 3.5 is basically the same engine as is offered in the Avalon (and also now offered in the RAV4), with dual variable valve timing, plus stepless cooling fan for reduced overall noise, and an active, fluid-filled engine mount system that is tuned to be most effective at idle speed. In addition, the alternator uses an acoustically decoupled pulley to help smooth out spikes as accessories cycle on.

The V-6 is mated to an all-new six-speed automatic transmission, while the four-cylinder goes with either a five-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. According to Toyota officials, the five-speed automatic is the same transmission as offered with the outgoing Camry V-6, while the all-new six-speed boasts a 20-percent reduction in number of parts versus the five-speed. Shifting for the six-speed is done through a gated shifter that's much like what's been offered on Lexus products - you can move the knob over to an 'S' position and then simply go up or down a gear at a time.

Comfy ride with better handling

Toyota engineers thoroughly revised the steering and suspension, aiming to keep the Camry's ride comfort while improving handling. The steering is now all-electric, with true variable assist, and it's tuned to behave quite differently with each powertrain arrangement. The front suspension uses a subframe, for the strut and control arm arrangement, and in back there are struts and a multi-link setup, with a hollow stabilizer bar.

If you don't have your mind made up as to which Camry you want, you might have to take a few test drives, as there's never been such a range in feel between the base four-cylinder car and the top-line V-6 luxury XLE and sporty SE. There was a very discernable difference suspension-wise between the four-cylinder LE, the V-6 XLE, and the V-6 SE we drove. Though the weight between the engines is quite close, there are differences in the way that the steering and suspension are tuned, we were told.

The standard four-cylinder engine has plenty of power for most situations, and even enough low-end torque for quick takeoffs from a standing start, as long as you don't have a full load. Despite its large displacement for a four-cylinder, it's also one of the most refined fours offered on any vehicle, and if you're puttering along with traffic with the sound system cranked you might have trouble telling the difference from the six.

If you appreciate sports-car power in a family sedan, the V-6 is the ticket (or, possibly, the way to a ticket). It has far more usable power than the engine is replaces, and pushes the Camry into a new category of performance. Toyota claims a 0-60 time of about seven seconds (slightly slower than the RAV4 with the same engine), but it feels considerably faster. The six-speed automatic functions flawlessly, and isn't flustered by the multi-gear, partial throttle downshifts that cause some competitors to temporarily cough up their throttle map (i.e., hesitate then surge). The new V-6 is extremely refined, with an almost indistinguishable idle, and under moderate throttle revs almost silently through the gears like a vehicle with the Lexus badge. Stomp your right foot down, and you'll hear just a little bit of raspy exhaust tone.

In the Hybrid model, Toyota opted to tune the Camry's system more for economy than all-out performance (you can expect more of a performance emphasis from Lexus models), as most Camry buyers tend toward the practical and frugal side of the car-buying spectrum. You can expect decent performance, though; the Camry hybrid isn't particularly sprightly off the line, but it does offer great passing power - better than the four, though not quite as athletic as the six - once the gasoline engine revs up with the motor in full assist. In low-speed stop-and-go driving, Hybrid drivers stand to gain the most, as the Camry can creep along with the electric motor only for a considerable time.

And for those all-important numbers, the Camry's hybrid powertrain offers 0-60 in about 9.4 seconds. Expect the four-cylinder to be around the ten-second mark while the V-6 will slot in at around seven seconds (slightly higher than the new RAV4 with the same engine)

Like we said, you might notice a pretty significant difference in the way Camrys drive with the three powertrains. It's not surprising that we found the basic four-cylinder Camry and the sporty SE V-6 to be the most balanced when flogged along a curvy road, with the XLE to be a little less versed for fast driving. The Camry Hybrid, burdened by about 400 pounds of extra mass, doesn't exactly feel tossable, but it's far from clumsy.

One bodystyle, wide range of equipment

As we hinted to above, the '07 Camry will be offered with a wide range of equipment, in base CE, LE, sporty SE, or luxurious XLE trims. The more seriously sporty SE grade now gets stiffer springs and dampers, a solid anti-roll bar, and stabilizing braces underhood and behind the rear seatback, along with an aerodynamic package and other performance cues. Additionally, a stabilizing brace is added to the underfloor, and a V-brace behind the rear seatback (which doesn't fold down on SE).

There's also an in-dash multi-function trip computer display on XLE and Hybrid models.

All Camrys now get MP3 compatibility and digital sound processing, along with the Auto Sound Levelizer, plus standard auxiliary input jacks for portable audio. The standard AM/FM/CD has six speakers and 160 watts and has very respectable sound, while the top system is an eight-speaker, 440-watt JBL Premium system with four-CD in-dash changer and Bluetooth telephony. There's also a new-generation voice-activated navigation system available, integrated with the top sound system. Again depending on the trim level, there are steering wheel controls for some of the audio and telephony functions.

A Smart Key system is now also available on the Camry - standard on Hybrids and available on XLEs - allowing hands-free unlocking and keyless starting from inside the vehicle. A remote engine starter is optional and functions with the Smart Key system.

VSC stability control is available on all Camrys, while Hybrid models get a standard integrated VDIM system, the automaker's more proactive, integrated stability control system. With a setup similar to that in the Highlander Hybrid, VDIM interlaces with the electric power steering and most of the electronic aids, including the ABS and standard stability control, to anticipate a potential loss of control and allow smooth adjustments - such as changing the steering boost - to help regain control.

ABS and Brake Assist will be standard on all models, as will seat-mounted side airbags, rear side airbags, side-curtain bags, and a driver-side knee airbag.

Frugal as ever

But fuel economy probably remains the top reason for wanting the hybrid, if not being able to boast to the neighbors. It carries stellar EPA ratings of 43 city, 36 highway. While we know that hybrid models aren't quite turning out their rated mileage in the real world, we were quite impressed with the trip-computer average we saw on our Camry Hybrid test car; in the mixed, mostly stop-and-go driving loop that Toyota had set up for us, the test car was averaging about 32 mpg - not bad at all for a bunch of hot-footed journalists trying to feel out the system.

Fuel economy will be a strength on the other Camry models, too, with four cylinder models offering up to 25 city, 34 highway, and V-6s getting 22 city, 31 highway.

With the Camry so overwhelmingly competent, it's hard to find faults even when you go looking for them. There was one that did stand out - the seats, which aren't at all comfortable for tall, lanky drivers like this one. Taller folks will likely find the lower seat cushions just too short, and the backrests are noticeable devoid of mid-back support. Those in that same category might find sunroof-equipped cars to be short on headroom, too, so make sure you try with the seat properly adjusted before you buy.

There are few practical downsides to getting a Camry. But give it a year or two, and they'll be everywhere. As it's likely to continue its best-selling status, there are few other models you can buy that assure more anonymity. Also, while the Camry's styling can be considered attractive by almost anyone, it's hardly bold. There might be more attention to detail up close, from the other end of the parking lot it still looks like a Camry.

From a purely practical perspective the new Camry doesn't feel a lot larger or more comfortable than the already-overachieving Camry that it replaces. But especially with the more expensive versions, it succeeds to bring in a little more emotion, with a little dash of Lexus style - enough such that people who might not have considered a Camry before will take a look.

Even more surprising is that the hybrid likely won't be the priciest Camry in the lineup - though we could see initial demand at dealerships driving premiums through the roof. Initial marketing plans call for the Hybrid to slot in below a loaded V-6, appealing to customers who value the technology of the Hybrid system more than the additional luxury or power. Look for all Camrys to post a modest price increase across the board, though.

The new Camry looks to be another home run for Toyota . It's not exciting, but it goes above and beyond what the vast majority of car buyers need, with more luxury than most of them will actually be looking for.

And it raises the bar for the competition, once again.

Hmm ... Anyone know what the premium on a hybrid Camry is going to be?

I wonder what the real world benefit of the hybrid drive in the Camry is going to be ...

Edmunds First Drive

Overall, they liked it. The reclining seats in the hybrid reclines 8 degrees, which doesn't sound like much, but maybe it'll have an effect on passengers.

If you listen to Toyota's representatives describe the all-new 2007 Toyota Camry, you'd think it was an entirely different car from the one it replaces. Words like "passion," "emotional" and "athletic" were peppered throughout the speeches by various Toyota folks during the car's first drive event. So let's get one thing straight before we begin — the redesigned 2007 Toyota Camry is not a passion-filled, highly emotional or super-athletic sedan. And by the way, that's OK.

Toyota sold approximately 420,000 Camrys last year — before the car's redesign and before the availability of a hybrid version. Prices for the 2007 Toyota Camry haven't been released yet, but they should align closely with 2006 models. The company is expecting to sell at least 450,000 this year, with that 30,000 bump coming from sales of the Camry Hybrid alone.
If prices aren't too high for the hybrid Camry, I definitely see it selling more than 30,000.

Toyota lowers Camry base price for '07 model - - Mark Rechtin - - Source: autonews

LOS ANGELES -- Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. has lowered the base price of the Camry sedan by $175, to $18,850 including shipping, for its redesigned 2007 model with a five-speed manual transmission.

Midgrade Camrys saw minor price increases, while top-end models saw moderate price increases to go along with substantially added content.

Toyota also increased the dealer profit margin on the car, although executives declined to give specifics.

The base model price reduction comes despite the CE trim level coming with much more standard equipment than the model it replaces.

The 2007 Camry CE comes with standard antilock brakes, cruise control, halogen headlamps, power windows with driver's auto-down, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, tire pressure monitor system, air conditioning and a six-speaker 160-watt CD system with auxiliary audio jack.

For safety, the Camry has dual-stage airbags, seat-mounted airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver's knee airbag. Sixteen-inch wheels replace 15-inch ones. Four-wheel disc brakes replace the disc-drum combination. Price of the CE with a 158-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission increases $45 to $19,900.

The volume-leader Camry LE, with a four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission, starts at $21,080, a $125 increase.

Camry V-6 models get a six-speed automatic transmission mated to a 268-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 engine, compared with a 190-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 engine and five-speed automatic on the old model. The Camry LE V-6 starts at $23,620 with shipping, a $260 increase.

The sporty SE trim level is priced at $21,370 for four-cylinder models with a manual transmission, an increase of $415. The four-cylinder engine and automatic transmission combination is priced at $22,370, an increase of $585. A Camry SE with a V-6 and automatic transmission has a price of $24,895, up $290.

The high-end XLE trim adds content such as a 440-watt audio system, power moonroof and reclining rear seats. A four-cylinder XLE will have a base price of $25,005, up $1,630 from the 2006 model. A Camry XLE equipped with a V-6 engine will be priced at $28,100, up $1,715.

Toyota also increased the dealer profit margin on the car
This one is even more interesting IMO.

ilitig8 02-25-2006 02:47 PM

You can't argue with those prices particularly (save the hybrid) when they will be selling at/below invoice in short order.

Someone mentioned if the price is right for the hybrid they will sell a lot more than 30K, I think the 30K is based on capacity. That is still the hitch with hybrids the capacity to build them is still low.

It may be a new car and items may be added, but technology/other costs lower year by year so some of those savings go to the consumer and more go to the dealer... Toyota hasn't pushed any limits- ex) trying to offer a 4 wheel double wishbone suspension like Honda or Nissans multilink, etc, things that cost.

rear looks like civic coupe. no?

Some of what you say is true BUT try to find a major redesign which added a ton of new features with only a 1/2% price increase (using the largest selling LE).

As for high dollar suspension options they make no sense for Toyota, they are in it to make money and the lower cost suspension is one way that helps them sell tons of cars and make tons of cash. Plus double wishbones are overrated for the street, lots of incredible cars use struts and accomplish great things (M3 etc). It is similar to the pushrod vs OHV argument, in the case of the LS engines they produce more power in a smaller lighter less complex package and still give excellent fuel economy. High specific output (like double wishbones) is great for press releases but make little difference in the real world.

But lowering the base price with the manual that few people buy isn't important. Other car forums say that if you price out the models with any content, you're paying more. Of course, they are just sad that Ford and GM can't do the same thing very well.

It's gonna be tough sledding for the Accord for the next 1.5 years. First the Sonata and now this new Camry.

Ya, Honda has to up the ante on the Accord. Edmunds and another online review have already started complaining about the Accord's metal exposed trunk! (New Sonata has padding back there). It's little things like that that's going to make a difference as newer cars are getting better and it's becoming more difficult to separate the good from the really good.
