TMQ 11-22-2006 04:14 PM

It's a competition for new models, so for any given year, the winner doesn't compete with winners from previous years. which is a strange way of setting up a competition. it's essentially a 'rookie of the year' award.

I like the C&D 10 best car much better. As far as I can remember, Camry has never won a spot on C&D.

Anyway, the Camry isn't a bad car, at least in terms of looks surely beats the current accord. Civic and Ridgeline won the MT awards last year.

This is sad.....

....... so will Toyota Corolla win next year??? YAWN...........

How could the current gen Camry be the hottest selling car in America if I hardly see them on the road? I still see more Accords than the Camry.

The Camry is boring and overall Toyota of a brand is boring in their car designs and performance compared to Honda and Nissan cars.

Why not? The Civic won last year...and it's not a particularly attractive car, especially the sedan.

And it will most likely lose to the mazda 3 also.

I'm not impressed. When part of the criteria for winning this award is how the winner will market the car, well, it's not really saying much about the award.

Besides that, it's sort of a dubious honor...the criteria for competiting requires a car to be either completely new or vastly changed. And this year, there ain't many new sedans the Camry had to compete with to win. About the only cars to give the Camry any competition were the Altima and the S-Class. Kia Rondo? I don't even know what that is LOL. But I still think the Camry is an excellent car for the majority of buyers out there.

The Mercedes G-Class winning the SUV of the year was a significant win - plenty of new models it had to compete with (MDX, RDX, Mazda CX-7, etc), and those were good competition.

That is retarded, a 60k+ suv beating out suv's down to 25k is a REAL accomplishment, WOW, "and those were good competition." Dumb/ass, sorry you seem to be IT.

gilboman 11-24-2006 01:45 PM

the camry set the new benchmark for family sedans and is way ahead of all its competition in a major market segment.

so it winning car of the year is very reasonable.

This year's field of contenders for Car of the Year included:

Drove my uncles Camry on the weekend for an hour. Reminded me of a sofa....it was rock solid. But nothing to be excited about.

phile 12-02-2006 06:58 PM

Could've been two for two, but the Honda Accord amazingly retains its spot on C&D's 10Best list for 2007.

An interesting take on the future of the Camry:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16774146/

“Camry buyers are on average in their low to mid-50s, and if Toyota doesn’t change the trajectory ... the Camry will become the Oldsmobile or the Buick of 20 years from now,” he said. “Their customers will be the oldest Americans, who are dying out of the market every day. Toyota is adamant that they are not going to let this happen, but they may be powerless to change it.”

gocubsgo55 01-24-2007 10:16 AM

In Europe, cars like the Golf GTI (this previous year), Renault Clio Sport, Honda Civic Type-R, and BMW 3er are named cars of the year.

In America... :D :tomato:

I'd agree. With the death of the Celica, Supra, and MR2/MRS there really isn't anything exciting in their lineup.

Reminds me of the Dudley Moore "Crazy People" movie:

Volvo. They're boxy, but they're good.

Essentially, that's where Toyota's heading. You really can't say much more than Toyota. They're boring, but they're good.

Toyota wouldn't mind the label as long as the sales keep happening. The point of the article tho was that eventually the demographics will kill (pun intended) the sales. :toocool:

Well, that's why Toyota was smart enough to start Scion a few years back. They know the above will happen.

Toyota did one with the Avalon a couple years ago, and it showed that the average buyer age had moved up to start from the mid-50s. Seems like Toyota will need to market the Avalon at the graveyard years from now.

Interesting...there's a TRD of the Aurion--which is Australia's equivalent of the Camry.

WYHI...?

http://www.cycloneinjapan.com/upload...urion_gray.jpg

Press release...

"TRD unveiled its forthcoming version of the car at the Melbourne show back in March, and this week announced that the performance of the engine it's developed for the TRD Aurion has exceeded the targets set for it. The 3.5L V6 gets force-fed via Eaton's new twin-vortices supercharger, which makes its production vehicle debut in this application. TRD's Australian arm hasn't released hard numbers yet, but indicates that the engine's planned output of 235 kW / 320 HP is among the specs that have been exceeded."

biker 06-22-2007 07:21 AM

Considering that the regular 3.5 V6 already makes about 270HP, a 50 HP increase from a supercharger is not very impressive. The looks of the car OTOH....:toocool:

Mokos23 06-22-2007 07:36 AM

Is that coming to the USA? That's probably the hottest Camry I've ever seen.

F23A4 06-22-2007 08:07 AM

Make a 4 cylinder LE model and modify it to look plain and the Indians here in Central NJ will go BONKERS over it.

Asia spec Toyota Camry

I didn't have time to go through all the pages of this thread so apologies if these pics have been posted earlier.

I'm in Singapore right now, and they have different versions of the Camry. I think the Asian spec Camry looks way better than the US spec. It looks like a true luxury car.

Here are some pics:

The front and rear of this Camry look beautiful IMO. I especially like the detail in the headlights.

You can also check out the Royal Crown on their hope page. It's also a bad ass looking car. Kind of looks like the old LS.

 No question about that. Similarly, I posted in another thread how well equipped the JDM Honda Inspire is versus the USDM Honda Accord (though the exterior does not vary much between both).

The Camry in those pics is more of a looker than our version.

Mokos23 06-24-2007 11:09 AM

If they did the US Camry like the asian/japanese version, then what's the point of getting an Avalon and even the ES350?

Avalon is bigger. Especially in the backseat, the Avalon provides as much legroom as those extended wheelbase flagship sedans. And the Avalon kicks their butt cause it's got a near-flat floor back there, no gigantic tunnel hump, three adults can comfortably sit back there.

MrChad 06-24-2007 04:33 PM

I actually think the US version Camry SE is quite the looker, the blacked out mesh grill and body kit look fantastic to me. Light years better then anything we've had from Toyota in years. And leaps and bounds better then any current 7th gen Accord.

Black Tire 06-25-2007 09:24 AM

In Australia, the aurion is above the camry. they're not the same model. just thought i'd clear that up.

the aussie camry is the same as the american camry...save for a few exterior differences. And from what I can see, the asian market camry is the equivalent to australia's aurion.

If you're talking about this picture, those aren't mufflers...most likely inset reflectors.

look at the lower right of the car and you can see the exhaust pipe below the bumper.

Thats the problem. The Camry was never really a luxury car in the US. Its a family sedan and basic transport for many families. Customers who want luxury has Lexus to turn to so an expensive lux Toyota is kinda pointless.

Second, the Avalon's target market is the Buick crowd. It was again never really much of a luxury car as much as a BIG car (yes, there are distinction between the two). It is designed for the crowd that are used to huge American barges.

A Toyota salesman's statement to my aunt upon the purchase of her 07 Avalon Limited, "Congratulations! You just purchased a Lexus."

I think Road and Track addresses the Avalon very well with this quote:

Toyota CNG Camry Hybrid Concept Revealed

From WCF...

Hearing any news from Toyota these days inevitably sounds like a taunt to the Big 3. It's not their fault, really. They're getting pummeled in sales too but they're not in jeopardy of imminent collapse and still have plenty of revenue streaming in and cash on hand to weather the storm.

So while the US automakers are drowning and begging for cash just to meet their payrolls, Toyota is rolling out its latest in hybrid technology: a natural gas hybrid.

The CNG Camry Hybrid is a concept car but it does provide some interesting numbers. With the natural gas equivalent of about 8 gallons of gasoline, the CNG Camry Hybrid gets a range of about 250 miles (or 400 km). That's an impressive pocketbook stat. It also emits lower levels of harmful emissions like NO-x, CO, CO2 gases as well as polluting particle matter.

But the car requires natural gas tanks, which must be cylindrical, in the spare-tire well and therefore come with runflat tires. Natural gas is also less dense, hence, less powerful, than gasoline or diesel fuel.

It's only a concept and there are no plans for production.

The CNG Camry Hybrid goes on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday.
