"Toyota says that turbocharging along with four-wheel drive and wide tyres are what make sports cars boring to drive."
Exsqueeze me?
I agree that turbos can screw up throttle response, but how does it possibly make the car boring to drive? I think the AWD part is a matter of opinion, both RWD and AWD are enjoyable in their own respects IMO.
This also sounds like a bit of a cheap shot at Subaru, since pretty much their entire hi-po lineup are turbo AWD cars.

But yea, I did think that was a cheap shot at Subie. I lol'd though when I read it.

Can't wait to see this at Detroit in January...
AZuser pretty much nailed down all the exterior differences. The little fender strakes are differently styled, and the Toyota's rocker panel looks a bit more subtle than the Subaru's. Could just be a lighting trick though.
I'd take the Subaru's interior over the Toyota's any day based on those pics. It's funny what subtlety can do to sway your opinion.

This is a glimpse of the potential these twins have. Get rid of those cheesy canards and I'd be all over it.

I'm a sucker for LEDs in headlights, but I like the Subaru's front better than the Toyota's.

I like the Subie more, but I cant really put my finger on why.

There are some things I like more on the GT-86 and some things I like more on the BRZ. For example, I like the lower mesh grille on the Toyota, but prefer the bumper section (where the license place mounts to) on the BRZ. I also prefer the headlights on the BRZ over the Toyota.

I like the foglight areas on the Subaru version more then the Toyota version. On the Toyota, they look too cute-sy

AZuser, good job on the pics. I didn't realize the cars shared that much sheetmetal. It's basically just the front that's somewhat different.
Do you like the smiley face or the frowny face?

I was (somehow) under the impression that they only shared a drive train but had unique sheetmetal. I agree, that they look exactly like the same stampings.

They envisioned a RWD sports car that's main focus is on handling that can be bought for ltl over 20k
300 hp... you're looking at like 35k+
I dont get all the anger thats going on here about power. All of you think the miata is amazing. That thing has way less power! And I dont even think its that much lighter. Not to mention the miata probably has a bigger price tag.
Sure it could use more power. But Toyota/Subaru still has to see this car in a business perspective.
They can make the car more powerful and offer it above 30k, but at that price range, getting a car that well probably is not the most ergonomic, comfortable, utility will be much much harder to sell than putting it mid 20s. I bet they aren't going to be making much money on this car anyway. Its to attract drivers to their line to develop a brand relationship maybe.

And I think the Miata looks way better and would really be something with more power.

There was no way to keep cost down without having the same sheet metal - I assumed all along that these two cars were just slightly a step up from badge engineered copies with different interiors.

Midnight Marauder
Both look great, though I prefer the color of the Subie version. It all comes down to which is cheaper or which dealer is willing to give me a better deal.

to each his own, but I think its a nice looking car.

I dont think it looks anything like the Civic coupe. Have you seen a Civic coupe? Theyre hideous.

Change one of the best qualities of a car of course people will be shitting on it.
Change the engine of an si, or make it "worse" people will be shitting all over it, and guess what thats what happened.

At least Toyota/Subaru are trying to deliver a decent sports coupe at a cheap price.
The Miata has cornered the market for lightweight, inexpensive fun cars. And thats exactly what Toyota/Subaru built. How many other cars are in that segment?
What does Honda have? The CRZ? Nissan? Nothing. Hyundai? Same as Nissan, the Genesis is heavy. American car companies? Not a damn thing. Ze Germans? Nein.
The Miata is a great car and has been dominant for 20 years. A lot of car companies have put out half baked products in an attempt to go toe to toe with the Miata. How many of them are still being made today? I commend Toyota and Subaru for building this car. In a down economy, it takes balls to build a niche product at a good price. I think it will perform well, both in sales and driving feel

200 hp is plenty for this car from the factory it doesn't need more its a lightweight coupe, I honestly think more horsepower will unbalance it.
Just think of it as a Miata coupe, because that is what I see, as opposed to the more porky genesis coupe.

I get that this car is a cheap, RWD coupe for cheap and I think it's fantastic. Yeah, it might be underwhelming cosmetically, but RWD is not a feature like leather, navigation, or a sunroof... it changes the car entirely.
There's plenty of space for a slightly pricier, higher performance model later on. But it looks like they didn't give the aftermarket much room to stretch their legs. I read that this engine might not be able to be turbocharged because there's no space for the snail?

Yeah... There's already rumors that TRD is already working on a supercharger for the 86.

I can't wait to see the details next spring...
It'll be interesting to see how much more is included in the BRZ vs. the FR-S and at what price those extras will be. I'm sure there'll be alot of crossshopping between the two models.
I really like the 86 badges on the FR-S fenders
