Nissan: GT-R News

^ Really? Guess you haven't been reading too many other threads discussing the GT-R. A bunch of people have publicly voiced their dislike of the car's appearance. I do have to say, it looks far better in person than it does in photographs. I must have spent a 1/2 hr at the Detroit Autoshow oogling over it.
Going back on topic, I do like the numerous clips where Leno discusses various cars in his collection and on test drives. The GT-R clip posted is no exception.

I think Leno's collection is amazing and his car knowledge is incredible, but honestly I don't think he's the best person to evaluate a car like the GT-R. Reason being most people that buy a GT-R will most likely be, well, not a multi-multi-millionaire, so they don't have 10, 20, 30 other super cars in their garage that they can drive after they get done driving their GT-R. I just think when you have that many cars it's easier to appreciate something that might not be the best choice for someone that might only be using it as their weekend car (singular, not plural). For instance, he gets tired of not being able to row through the gears, he steps out of the GT-R and into one of his Ferraris. The average weekend racer doesn't have that option. Don't get me wrong though, I really like the GT-R, but his opinion on it doesn't much matter to me personally.

at first i really didn't like the looks of the gt-r. but after watching some videos, i think it's slowly growing on me.
that, and the fact it's exterior probably serves some sort of functional purpose. so if that means better aerodynamics, general layout of the car, etc....i'm fine with it. that thing is a beast that i could only afford maybe in 10 years. haha.

Downright incredible numbers, but its aesthetically below its competitors, be it a 911, corvette, or anything else it can beat. That being said, I have nothing but respect for Nissan and those numbers are unbelievable, regardless of make, heritage, etc.
The thing about the exterior design is, when a lancer evo or sti is dowdy looking, its an endearing characteristic. They say, "I'm cheap, ugly, and built from an econobox, but I'm fast." However, with a $60k or 70k vehicle, it has to have a certain presence when you price it like a corvette and design it to kill exotics. The looks have to match the performance. Its gotta look at least as good as a corvette or even a G37.
When a g35/37 coupe or even an Altima coupe can look as great as they do, you have to believe that Nissan can do better. Either they were asleep at the wheel with its exterior design, or thats the design language that says "fast" in Japan. I thought other skylines looked much better for their time, IMO. I believe they can do better than the exterior they had for the GT-R, and possibly broaden the appeal.

when it comes to design it's all subjective, be it a house, shirt or a car. You said something about the Corvette? IMO, the design of the vette is nothing to write home about... BUT that's MY opinion... Nissan "can do better"?...

Nissan/Infiniti can do better for its flagship - case in point-g35 or g37. When the g35 coupe came out in the middle of the decade, they made a mid $30k car look like it was $50k or 60k and it was gorgeous. Is the GT-R gorgeous or desirable aesthetically? No. It looks purposeful, but even the older GTR's looked better.
Nissan can do better with the looks, no harm in that right? I'm giving them credit? Aside from looks, I am just as in awe of this car as everyone else is, and give credit to Nissan/Infiniti for making a great looking cars in the G-series and M-series with absolutely no malicious intent. Just my $.02.

GT-R drops 'Ring time down to 7:29

When the 193-MPH Nissan GT-R set a lap time of 7:38 last year at the 'Ring, besting cars like the Porsche GT3, Lamborghini Murcielago, and Mercedes SLR, the Nissan team was disappointed. There were two damp corners on the track, and everyone was quite sure that the car, piloted by official test driver Tochio Suzuki, could go faster.
Now it has. With a completely dry track, the base model Godzilla-san wearing stock Japanese-market tires shaved 9 seconds off its previous best time, posting a lap time of 7:29. On that same lap, it leapfrogged the Porsche GT2, Koenigsegg, and SLR 722 GT. Now it's flashing its headlights at the Carrera GT and Pagani Zonda F Clubsport, both about one second up the road. So if the standard model on stock tires does 7:29, and the more powerful, lighter GT-R V-Spec has already been casually clocked at 7:25 -- betting on what the GT-R's ultimate best lap time will be begins now... And did we say it can all be yours for $70,000?

but when this car sells out at $70k+ will you still think you really know more about design than Nissan?

Wanna cut me a little slack here for my opinion? There no argument to be won here, I hope you see that with your rolling eyes.

Official, Nissan Announced GT-R Laps Nurburgring in 7m 29s
To go with is300eater's post...
From WCF...
From WCF...
The Nissan GT-R can now lay claim to being one of the fastest production cars in the world after GT-R chief test driver Tochio Suzuki completed the famous Nurburgring circuit in Germany in just 7 minutes 29 seconds. According to our records, this puts the GT-R in second place for fastest laps by unmodified production cars just behind the Pagani Zonda F which posted a time of 7 minutes and 27 seconds last November. The time completely destroys the GT-R's previous best lap of 7 minutes 38 seconds achieved last year in slightly damp conditions.
Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer for GT-R said “At last year’s testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nürburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world. We set out to build a multi-performance supercar accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere – I believe the GT-R has delivered that promise.”
The world can now look forward to a response from the GT-R's main competitor, the Porsche 911 Turbo whose best time stands at a lowly 7 minutes and 40 seconds.

oh...and my former CL-S probably weighs less and gets better gas mileage while pulling 21+ minute laps too!

Word is getting around the traps that the transmission in the famously destructive R35 GT-R may be wearing out faster than expected. MCR, one of the lucky Japanese tuning houses to have a GT-R, have reported that initial inspections are showing unexpected signs of wear in the transmission; raising fears that the GT-R is not as flawless as we’d all hoped.
Perhaps if it were a more expensive car, the gearbox would be less likely to shoot out random cogs and cut your leg off at the knee. Not that it’s going to do that.
MCR’s inspection has lead them to conclude that the transmission’s lifespan—at least if used as heavily as they do—may be no longer than 12 months if the engine’s power is tweaked. Of course, with the V-Spec model on the way, we may soon see a stronger gearbox available.

Do they think they are over charging?
Does Ferragamo think they're over charging comparing to Kenneth Cole shoes?
